LIAT, The Caribbean Airline, announced on Thursday the complete removal of fuel surcharges on all new tickets booked, effective 1st March 2016.
Chief Executive Officer David Evans said oil is now trading at a 12-year low, ending a decade of high jet fuel costs, which has impacted the price of tickets.
“We are committed to offering our customers the most affordable fares so our Finance team regularly reviews the fuel surcharge levels and whenever changes are decided upon we announce them to the market,” Mr. Evans said. “In this vein, we reduced the fuel surcharge by 50 percent at the beginning of 2015 and it will now be completely removed from March 2016. This will mean that fares will fall by an average of 5 percent. So, beginning 1st March, customers will only have to pay the airfare and any applicable airport and government taxes when they book a flight.”
While the price of oil has been trending downwards, Mr. Evans explained that the effects of crude oil price reductions take some time to impact on the cost of aviation fuel.
“The jet fuel price to LIAT is on average 90 percent higher than the crude price and it takes on average three to six months for the crude oil price reductions to be applied in the region,” he said.
Mr. Evans said the surge in oil prices since 2003 had turned fuel into one of LIAT’s largest costs.
How many care? What LIAT should do is to increase its planes to Dominica.
When Dominicans book a flight from abroad they are immediately informed they have to overnight. This is extremely disappointing to the extent that, due to the inconvenience some, whether D/cans or not, will not travel to D/ca unless for an emergency. Accumulative, it is a major loss for D/ca.
My feeling is that LIAT has done this so as not to have to bear the cost of hotel accommodation which includes meals where applicable, when their flights are late and/or no show.
Let us say that LIAT is a smart one and pulled a fast one on us Dominicans at our expense.
LIAT, you would do us a good service to reinstate this service. This is the manner in which you will please us most.
Minister of Tourism and Discover Dominica, you could take this up with LIAT. Know that LIAT will have an excuse.
I have been considering writing LIAT executives. Depend on me. I will and soon enough.
It takes some time…so 12 years then?
Liat should now concentrate on their customer service, their reliability, their timeliness…Oh how I hate Liat!!! How could a business with such a huge monopoly do such a poor job; maybe that is the problem: lack of competition!!! Buck up Liat and try to work with your customers; so far you are a fail
I swear people don’t read…..“The jet fuel price to LIAT is on average 90 percent higher than the crude price and it takes on average three to six months for the crude oil price reductions to be applied in the region,” he said.
What difference does this make with the unreasonably high Government TAX on the tickets.
DOMLEC should follow suit
Fuel surcharge can come off how they want, LIAT rates are too high
their conscience pricking them so long gas prices down down down….
People can say what they want about LIAT I still prefer them to that piece of light wind paper bag Winair nonsense they have going Canefield. That nonsense this Labor regime calls progress. Soon I will be flying you (LIAT) to come down here and investigate the hip of garbage that has been going on in my land. By the way, thanks for allowing the Labor regime to invest in you then show very little to no interest in them in return. You made a proper example out of them. Is stupid they stupid so treat them like they thoroughly deserve. Thanks for the small discount too.
Several months ago I predicted this would inevitably happen. I just don’t know why LIAT delayed the reduction – Maybe they were hoping/anticipating another Oil increase. The other thing I noticed is, whenever the price of oil deeps we pay a little less at the pump; but the engine oil price remains the same. Isn’t that robbery?
Thank you very much and not before time. Now Seaborne and Winair will have to do the same. Competition is healthy.
