LIAT to begin Dominica flights Friday

liat logoLIAT, The Caribbean Airline, announces the resumption of flights to and from the Douglas-Charles Airport in Dominica starting Friday September 18.

LIAT was forced to suspend services to Dominica on August 27 due to the passage of Tropical Storm Erika which resulted in severe damage to the island and closure of the Douglas-Charles Airport.

Chief Executive Officer David Evans applauded the Government and People of Dominica for their resilience over the last several weeks citing their tireless efforts to get the country back to a state of normalcy following the storm.

“We are extremely happy to be returning to Dominica,” Mr. Evans said, noting that “this would not have been possible without the spirit of community and resilience for which Dominica is well known”.

LIAT will operate one flight to Dominica on Friday September 18; increasing to two daily flights from Saturday September 19.

LI 581 will depart Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport at 07:10 daily, arriving at the Douglas-Charles Airport at 07:50. The return service LI 580 will leave Dominica at 08:30, arriving in Antigua at 09:10.

Effective Saturday, September 19, LI 364 will depart Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados at 14:20 daily, arriving at the Douglas-Charles Airport at 15:20. On Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday the service continues to Guadeloupe and Antigua arriving at 16:25 and 17:20 respectively. On Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the service continues non-stop to Antigua, departing Dominica at 16:00 and arriving in Antigua at 16:40.

All night flights into and out of Dominica remain suspended until further notice.

Customers travelling from Dominica are advised that they should arrive at the airport at least three hours before the scheduled departure time to give themselves enough time for the increased security and baggage checks at the Douglas-Charles Airport.

While the company anticipates that some customers may wish to move an increased volume of cargo and luggage with the resumption of services, due to the cargo hold capacity limitations of our aircraft, it is necessary that LIAT restricts the amount of baggage carried by its customers. This will help us offer a more consistent and reliable baggage delivery service to customers adhering to the baggage limitations.

Customers are reminded that the free baggage allowance for all LIAT services is one piece at a maximum of 50 lbs (23 kgs.) per adult or child customer. Additional pieces of luggage will attract a charge and will be accepted on a stand-by basis. The maximum overall size per piece will be 62 inches (157 cms).

In addition customers are allowed one piece of cabin baggage at a maximum weight of 15 lbs (7 kgs.) and maximum overall dimensions of 21 inches x 14 inches x 8 inches (53 x 35 x 20 cms). These dimensions include wheels, all pockets and handles.

Liat we are in a emergency situation
Check your fares. God have mercy what
You people think. I will have to travel by boat
Because your fares are just rediculous.

Caribbenmfeery was charging $400 one way so for a return trip $800 for 11 hours at sea between and and Dom and back. Liat charges around the same 40 mins flight each way…dunno bout u but I sticking with liat.. Have u gone to the banks and ask them to cut liat loans in half so they can sympathize more with Dominicans? U looking at ur pocket..at the end of the month liat can’t say to the bank I can’t make the payment cuz I ignored business principles to fly Dominicans for next to nothing…if u want to talk about ppl taking advantage is our fellow Dominicans…boat owners were charging 100 and sometimes 150 one way from posrtsmouth to Roseau. Where were u to call on them.. Other persons bought gas by the drums then turn around and sold it at 20 & 25 dollars a gallon.. Learn to fix things locally then u can call on liat

Have you looked at the fares from the other islands ? It’s not just
Looking at our pocket, why do we have the highest fares right now
        Can you answer me that?

So because locals charging $150. By boat from Roseau to portsmouth. Liat should also take advantage
Of the situation, apples and oranges my friend.
Did you invest in the local boats no, millions went into liat so know you talking about.

        – The banks are not subsidized by the tax payers like LIAT
        – The banks are not owned by the Govt. – except NBD indirectly – and compete with each other and the credit unions, not like LIAT.
        – If I arrive late in Antigua, or say Barbados, and must book a hotel because I missed my connection I’d rather take an overnight ferry directly to Roseau, even if it is nearly the same money. At least I’m sure my luggage will arrive with me.

If LIAT is that good why do our leaders exhort us to support “our” airline, while they themselves use charter aircraft for their business, at the tax payers expense?

Why not travel by boat if it is comfortable? There was a time D/cans traveled by boat to A/gua, St. Lucia, etc.
Due to the cost of airfare and allowing only 50 lbs (fares increased and luggage weight decreased), if you are only traveling to A/gua or St. Lucia or Guadeloupe or Martinique, why not travel by boat?
I imagine the ferry made some good money after T.S. Erika.

Persons who were book on the other cancelled flights are now accommodate on these two flights effectively absorbing all,the cheaper fares.

It is a REAL Fact that on Wednesday Sept. 16, at 8:34 am, according to DNO, PM Skerrit said this: “Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has announced that based on advice given by LIAT, the airline will begin commercial flights at the Douglas Charles Airport on Wednesday (today). ” It is a fact! Read it here: https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/business/liat-to-begin-commercial-flights-at-douglas-charles-airport/.

Wait nuh, two flights daily? Is this a temporary measure until things improve at Melville Hall or is this the new ‘regular’ LIAT flight schedules into Dominica from henceforth?

Before Erica, LIAT averaged about 7-10 flights into Dominica per day and most of the flights were during the daytime with 1 – 3 being night flights based on the time of year.

    September 17, 2015

Misinformation is one of the main tool that an uninformed and unwise Gov’t uses to control their populace. Dominicans are a well educated people and well traveled too. So it bugs me to see that they are so gullible to every little thing that comes out of the mouths of these desperate so called leaders we have here today.”Control their minds and we will get them to do and think as we like” is one of the sayings of a former dictator. Are we seeing the same thing happening in Dominica today? “Yes I think so.”
Can’t we see that this Gov’t has no plans , written or in mind on how to react in case of emergencies, whether it be man made or natural? These guys are playing it as the days comes and goes as they say this is another day we survive.
Dominicans it is time to put yourselves first and take charge of your future. I did not want to put politics in situations like this , but I am forced to when I see the incompetence of our current leadership. There wasn’t all that games…

    September 17, 2015

I hope the Gov’t is going to have an after action debriefing session with local communities to see what they did wrong and how they can do better in the future.
It will not be correct if we continue with business as usual when all is said and reconstructed. We have to have a sort of investigation, as to why, the shelters were not properly identified and stocked, why isn’t there emergency funds and relief items in Gov’t coffers, and the unprepared response time that we are seeing from Gov’t officials!! We have to investigate these things , for what they did not know about disasters and responses. I heard the very people who are being paid all for these years for emergency preparedness relief , themselves saying they don’t know what to do! So this is much bigger than anything we have seen in our lifetime. Also we have to go back and ask the Gov’t , if they knew then what they know now , if they would have declared a state of emergency. This time it is about our survival. Da…

    • The Real Facts
      September 20, 2015

What did the government do wrong? What shelters does D/ca have? Since when does D/ca have shelters? You are watching too much international TV and Internet.
Heavy rains pounded Dominica, caused rivers to overflow and landslides. You noticed what occurred to schools and residents’ houses. Some of them were fortunate that they survived.
Where could D/.cans shelter from such a type of weather?
You are fortunate that Massacre did not get the worst of it including you. If it had affected you and in a worst manner, you would not have a computer to write this nonsense.
In the past the government declared a state of emergency. Many of you criticized the PM about it. Some of you are never pleased.
You do not have a good memory? Go to DNO archives and you will find the articles.
You know what? In time, people pay for their words and inconsideration, putting it mildly.

    September 17, 2015

it is so interesting how Dominican would address a situation without looking for reasons behind an action. Take not that I am not politically biassed however, looking at things from different eyes, I can clearly say that no human being is perfect. Were we under any watch for the Tropical Storm Erika? No!! we were not, yet we got hit and horribly too. Was that an error of the Prime Minister too?
Knowing how badly DOMINICANS like to blast and criticize everything a person does and says, do you honestly think the Minister would take on his own to announce the commencement of LIAT flights to the island? I made a call to the office yesterday morning and I was told that my flight information will not be changed. I proceeded to the airport. While there, I was told by a few other people I met before me that the flights are not coming anymore. I called a LIAT rep who I am very familiar with and he explained to me that for reasons he is unable to announce, no flights will coming again.

    • Disgusted
      September 17, 2015

He further informed me that LIAT would have to announce a new date for resuming service. Please Dominicans, lets be a little more sensitive to the situation we are currently facing. Help each other to rise. With the disruptive political biased mindset, we will NEVER see the need to work together. Division will cause us to remain backwards. For the people blasting political leaders, please be reminded that the people have the power to change things since it is by votes that a person leads, unfortunately, OUR EYES ARE CLOSED to positive future visions. For obvious reasons, you all will see them as the most powerful because you are all so stupidly divided. smh….. Please, work as one and see how much power the people have over the political leaders.

      • The Real Facts
        September 20, 2015

No one knows how effective an elected leader will be until that leader is in office. There are some, because they support another Party, they do not see the good the Party in power doing. This is the attitude of some D/cans. They are bias.
If I did not support and vote for an elected Party but I see some good the leader of the Party has done, I will be pleased. I will not lambaste that Party because I do not support its leader. On the contrary, the next election I would vote for that Party – the leader.
There are some D/cans who have much to learn and to become broadminded. They need to smarten up and increase their narrow minds.

There is a major crisis going on in DA right now and also don’t forget the PM is only human like yourselves and we all make mistakes. Well jane anytime someone says or make a comment about skerrit and that upside down DLP government, its taken as negative criticism. So just keeeping it real  , about a months ago the government stated, they have spended 539.5 million dollars on the roads, seawalls, airport, from 2009 to 2015. We got 81 miles of road, plus a few hundred feet of runway at the airport. A few year ago skerrit gave liat $800,000. dollars. and now we have over $900,000. in debt. So what do we have to show in return. So while our people are experiencing difficulty traveling,. the P.M. family left the island a few days ago without any problems or delays. I guess the our hospitals was not good enough. But the DLP government will tell the people, to use the substandard services they provide, and keep your mouth shut

Well ‘Ma” Comrade Rob, did not invest 3 million of our tax dollars into liat, and it a time of need, we get this poor customer service. And Comrade Rob family is not in america, he and his wife is on the sanction list, and does not have an AMERICAN PASSPORT. When tough time comes. some of us, send our family to America.

Marina McKenzie the correct terminology is ‘deliver’ her child not ‘make her child. That’s the beauty of technology we can all have or say, regardless how nonsensical or pronucements is.

Why would your 75 year old aunt go the airport and not have a flight? Did she have a ticket for a flight? If she did then the pm was right about liat resuming flights. Now if that’s the case l liat is at fault not the government. Now I think next time you should recommend to your aunt that she checks her reservation before she leaves home.

I hope when Skerrit made the announcement early this morning some people were not foolish enough to rush to the airport to catch LIAT.

The way the country going there, somehow I feel we might have a Jim Jones type of crisis in Dominica anytime. Jim Jones experience in 1931 was religious but the next one might be politics. By the way politics and preachers are close friends this days. Mark my words!

FYI, prior to the Jim Jones experience, there were warnings and danger signs that loyalists ignored, and as a result they perished. I see a lot of danger and warning signs in Dominica today that loyalists keep ignoring to the point that when a danger sign is posted, they interpret it to say that we calling for the downfall of Dominica. Hey, Jim Jones! Next time you read Wikipedia read it properly. That Jim Jones was born in 1931 and the Guyana massacre took place in 1978, when that messiah was 47 yrs. of age. We are getting there, but not yet.!

Boy I had a good laugh today. After Skerrit made his announcement today, my good friend from DA, a poto, poto, poto skerrit, who got stock in DA after Erica, had the guts to call me in the USA to ask me to come pick him up at the FLL airport at 8:30 tonight. I asked my friend how he leaving Dominica and the poor thing telling me LIAT resuming service in DA today according to the Prime Minister. I said boy is Skerrit the CEO of LIAT. He said the PM would not make such announcement if he was not sure. I said bro, you need to put politics aside and face reality. The man still telling me the PM would not announce something he is not sure of. Well maybe all now the man might still be at the airport waiting because he called me about 9:00

Unless you’re aware of the devastation that happened and have some sense as to the chaos that happens in these situations you’re just blowing pointless steam out your end. Even in developed countries there’s this much chaos in crisis why should we be any different? Its better to be confusing than doing things ill-prepared. I don’t care much for politics but anyone of you blabber mouths out there would not do any better. So stop shooting yourselves in the damn foot by crying down your own country while its down. DNO, I find this news item should make mention of the announcement made by the PM earlier today. Here is what it said: “Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has announced that based on advice given by LIAT, the airline will begin commercial flights at the Douglas Charles Airport on Wednesday (today).”

I find we try to shield the Minister of everything too much. The man must understand that he does not own Liat and he should not run to make announcements. He is just too busy looking for noticing> He is too busy to be seen as the one to break the news. So far, during the storm most of his rushed announcements have been very wrong and misleading. That’s very wrong for a nations leader!
I will wait to hear The Real Facts make excuses like, ” I would not delve into this so much. Those poor guys are extremely busy and trying to organize matters,” as he stated in previous statements.

Honestly don’t like to comment but it’s people like you that maybe were not affected. No matter how much you don’ what the man for PM you should not be here bashing the every word of the man who is trying to help all people from all walks of life from this nation. It is impossible for you to have been one of those who lost relatives, a house, a car, a business, land or even being affected by the lack of water or proper access to your home or relatives. You certainly did not have relatives stuck overseas or even here trying to get out for medical attention.

If you don’t have anything positive to say. Please keep quiet.

DNO, I am disappointed that in this time you are not more sensitive to the needs of our people by blocking some of these insensitive comments!

When will you get it into your head that he is the PM? LIAT provided him with the information. He felt it his duty as PM to inform Dominicans. He must have been elated that D/ca’s airport is back in business and so is LIAT. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and He did nothing wrong.
Your problem and that of some others is, you must learn respect for the PM Keep in mind that God is watching and listening to everything we say and do for our judgment. He is patient. Reason is, on that inevitable day, everyone will receive exactly what they deserve. Therefore, change your heart and mind. Whatever is in them is in your soul. Learn to be kind in words and action.
I, personally would accept this news coming from him, without criticism, thinking that D/can travelers will be happy about that.

That’s the thing liat did not tell him the were starting operations on Wednesday .they would first need to inform their managers withing their network also their scheduling team and reservations who will be resposible for loading the flights in the system so you could book online ot through them..any of you notice that going online dominica wasnt even an option on the liat website even after the pm said they were gonna operate? i just laughed cuz i have friends that a pilots and not even they were informed but pm there running his mouth..
liat is a professional organisation and as such do things in a transparent way. a press release was issued on all social and local media so everyone know when operations will start..

So why was the P.M family not patient to wait for the first liat fight to pick up passenger, to get on.to leave, It would be a good photo, to see the P.M waving goodbye to them, What was the rush.

Boy all I can do is laugh at comments of spin doctors like @ The Real Facts, @ SMH and others. They are so positive that they don not want us to see and point out the real facts.

It is a FACT that according to DNO, Liat announced on Wednesday that flights to Dominica would resume today.

@SMH and @ The Real Fact and other spin doctors, somebody mis spoke or was misleading. I wonder who? Stop blaming DNO for reporting FACTS man!

You guys are too negative that when the positive takes place you can’t see it. I am positive, are you?

I do not think as you and am not bias as you. I am also not a negative person. I do not scrutinize everything so as to make negative comments as you. Leave me out of your melee, mess and criticisms.
It appears that some of you have nothing better to do than to consistently criticize. It is something you excel in. If prizes were given for it, some of you would be the winners.
If you would put on your thinking cap and give the PM’s communication a good thought, you would appreciate it.
As someone stated, “Negativity and discouragement do not come from God.” Make a note of it.
People as you, your attitude are the cause of division and disunity. Then you blame someone else.
Be thankful that you were spared TS Erika. I would think there would be very little negativity and criticisms after this devastating storm and other smaller ones. People as you have not changed and learned. One day you will. Hope it will not be too late for you.

Sorry but the Prime Minister does not know everything. Earlier today we got a communique from him that LIAT service would resume today but the news from the airline direct is that this will not happen till friday. I really would advise our P.M. to leave things like these to the experts. He should have more confidence in himself and the people that report to him to know what they are doing and in this case, leave it to the aviation experts. If you think I am somewhat irked, you are right, I am!
Having said that I note that LIAT have used the unfortunate Erika disaster to cut back their scheduled service to/from Dominica to only three flights LI 364, 580 & 581. I can not blame them if this makes economic sense to them but it does not help accessibility. I would urge the govt. to allow continuation of operations from Canefield with other carriers to provide a much needed alternative.

I think u to shud leave what u don’t know about for the experts..are u aware that the night landing and navigation equipments have been damaged? At present only visual flight rules apply.. Breaking it down for u ,the pilot must have direct view of the airport to attempt landing. With that said are u expecting liat to change the time for all its evening flight just to get to dominica before sunset? Just isn’t possible so be greatful cuz 3 is better than none…

      • Malatete
        September 17, 2015

Believe me, I am very familiar with VFR (visual flight) regulations. You are right, runbways09/027 are presently not lighted. However, LIAT had already adjusted its flight schedules before Erica to ensure arrival times at DOM* under VFR, mainly because of wind speed restrictions on approaches from the sea.
There is presently also a treshold restriction: “runway 09 D/treshold 338 m. due to broken pavement of 15 metres. The broken area will be marked in white. Caution advised” This as per latest NOTAM (advice to pilots) of yesterday 16 Sept. at 15.35 hrs.
        * Please note, the airport is still officially designated Melville Hall airport (DOM).

    • The Real Facts
      September 16, 2015

If you think, you would realize that he did not take it upon himself to do so. He must have received the information from LIAT. Then LIAT changed its mind or the D/can airport is not yet ready for business. Should you not have considered that? Why blame him? Your critique is, much ado about nothing.
