LIAT to meet with regional trade unions

CEO of LIAT Brian Challenger

Dominicans employed by regional airline LIAT will have their concerns brought to the fore at a meeting in Barbados this month.

Employees have been told that some 100 of them may be made redundant as LIAT plans to close some of its ticketing offices; but little has been said on the matter.

The union representing staff at LIAT in Dominica, the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU), says it has been invited to a meeting March 29 to further discuss the matter.

WAWU Secretary Treasurer Kertiste Augustus said the invitation comes after the WAWU and trade unions in the region called for meetings with LIAT board of directors.

“In this time when we are experiencing high levels of unemployment throughout the region, we cannot afford to have further numbers being placed on the breadline,” Augustus underscored.

LIAT Chairman Gene Holder and LIAT Chief Executive Officer Brian Challenger are among the LIAT officials that the WAWU and other trade unions in the region will meet with on March 29.

you dont see the need, but it creates employment for people! when the Electronic system fails what will you do with your debit card? we need those offices to remain open.

I personally do not see the need for all these ticketing offices.

Whenever I travel I use my nbd debit card to pay for my ticket online (whether its aa.com or liat.com) and show up to the airport with my confirmation number and passport as well as tax clearance and I roll.

Then again we need to think of the not so technologically advanced (Gbay don’t take offense) and keep a few of these offices open.
