Flour, coffee, cereal, stir fry, and bread are a few of the products currently being produced out of banana by Green Eye Production; a three member group currently based in Loubiere.

The group’s main purpose is to promote the use of locally grown organic bananas and encourage eating organically grown food.

Green Eye Production held a press conference on Monday to introduce some of its product which it hopes will be on the shelves soon.

“Eating organic is one of the best things a person can choose to do,” Sylvester Joseph, a member of the group, told the press conference. “All the chemicals and other things which are added to food are harmful to the body. Organic food is the best thing. We are hoping to feed the nation with our products and assist them in becoming more healthy and help them enjoy life the way they should.”

products1He added that they hope to eventually have a building where they will be able to produce and package the items for sale.

Green Eye Productions boasts that their items are free from GMOs and LMOs and according to Julie Joseph, another member of the Green Eye Production, the products are now undergoing the requirements set by the Bureau of Standards before it can be seen on the shelves.

“There are some lab testing that we have to do before it can be seen on the shelves, we want to ensure that we follow the standards of the bureau of standards and have it properly marketed,” he said.

Presently, the Environmental Coordinating Unit (ECU) in Dominica is implementing a project on Biosafety and Biotechnology under the Cartagena Protocol.

This protocol contributes to ensure an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology which may have adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

I kinda worried how you gonna maintain your supply of raw materials(green bananas)as the demand increases. Because with Black Sigatoka taking its fair share on the crop, organic management practices seems to be last resort here in Dominica. So the question is how will the company maintain its internal certification/guarantee system that will validate the integrity of its claim. Yes organic is the way to go but where we getting all that “organic green fig” from since Black Sigatoka present in almost all agricultural producing regions of the island. A public claim like this has public responsibilities and I have not read of them thus far by the company. Many more questions to ask.

This should be an organic island. What a disappointment to people who come here and find out that it isn’t. Many of these herbicides and pesticides should be banned because people don’t know how to use them properly (try gramazone and Round-up).

Yes! Let’s go organic! Let’s go natural! We need to educate the young generation on the value and benefits of organic / natural food verses processed / chemical foods. Marketing and selling must do some work in this area. Certainly, although residing in Houston Texas USA, I am already a customer for your product.

Lets hope that your costs can be competitive; otherwise, the locals who need it most wont be able to buy it regularly.

Congratulations and good luck to those who are involved in this enterprise. Organic foods are being promoted and are recommended for health reasons. They are already sold on the market in especially bigger countries. It has not yet totally caught on due to scepticism and the cost. We do know it takes time for customers “to warm up” to new products, if you know what I mean. In time, this will occur.
I have no wish to criticize or be negative. However, from what I know organic is more expensive than ordinary foods.
Nevertheless, I wish you progress and success. I hope someday to get a taste of your organic products :) which means to purchase them. God bless you in your endeavor.

We wish Green Eye the very best with this venture.
Unfortunately, this announcement does not paint the company in the best of light. I sincerely hope that Mr. Joseph did not say that he intends to produce cereal and coffee out of bananas. When announcing a new venture you need to make sure that the information about your product(s) is credible.
At the same time, since the operation is at an early stage of development, there is still time to learn from such mis-steps.Good luck.

This is good in every aspect. Banana farmers will be able to sell hopefully to maintain this business and still be able to export, this business will create jobs for locals and its healthy eating. Well done. Lets get it on the market now and hopefully regionally within the near future

Producing Coffee out of Banana?? Hmmm that’s almost as good as turning water into wine.

I’ve actually tried it. Maybe coffee should be in ” ” but ya it’s the concept. N it was pretty good.

    • Justice and Truth
      June 25, 2013

What do you mean “I do not think so?” You think only but you have no idea if it can be done.
It always takes one person or a group or enterprise to devise the idea, initiate it and commence experimenting for possible production.
If people are smart they never inform others of their plans until it comes to fruition. Otherwise others could take that same idea and reap the fruits of it. As it is now, if they patent their product, legally, it cannot be stolen. If this occurs, they could sue anyone who steals the identical plan.
There are some who will try. Some may devise a different method of producing it. You know, as other items and products, food and otherwise which are marketed. Examples, manufacturing of vehicles, computers and entertainment devices, to name a few.
