New security measures at Barbados airport

A section of the Grantley Adams International Airport

Dominicans and everyone traveling to Barbados via regional airline LIAT will be subjected to new security measures which are in effect at Gate No. 9 (the Regional Lounge) of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) Inc.

The GAIA Inc. now requires that all passengers entering the Regional Lounge be re-screened on entry.

This means that in addition to in-transit passengers who are usually screened on entering the Regional Lounge, those passengers who were screened on entry to the main terminal building must now be re-screened on entry to the Regional Lounge.

LIAT has made it clear to customers that this re-screening process is a requirement of the GAIA Inc.

The GAIA Inc. has relocated the scanner to main entrance door of the lounge so that all passengers can be screened/scanned on entry. They have advised that the relocation is temporary.

All persons leaving the Regional Lounge will also be required to be re-screened on re-entry.

In light of the new security measures, LIAT is advising all passengers to make their way to Gate No. 9 well ahead of their boarding time to go through the screening process.

My sister from East Africa was on transit at the airport in Barbados and she and other passengers were locked up in a room in the airport until the time they were ready to board their flight to St. Vincent. Unfortunately, on her way back, she still had to transit through the airport in Barbados and this time, the immigration officials forced her out of the airport into a filthy lodge, can someone save us from the harassment faced by travellers at the Grantley Adams Airport?

I don’t blame them. You have so many people from other Islands going to the people Island who’re so stupid causing so many problems. Guyanese Jamaicans Vincentians. When the bajans catch them they start crying. We all think we’re better than bajan. If so keep out the people country.

Talking from a security perspective, we had alot of knives and other potential weapons being found at Regional Intransit points. So if Dominica and the other Islands were doing their jobs properly then why Antigua and Barbados still finding weapons on intransit. I still say Regional Security Screening should commence. We still have wicked people travelling in our air space and these are usually the trouble makers.

What’s the difference. They aren’t being used on the planes. There are no incidents. This isn’t about security. It is about facism. Total control of the little people. Everybody is a criminal in their eyes.

For the sake of keeping everyone safe, everyone has to be looked at as a potential criminal. Because there have not been any incidents YET…. doesnt mean that we need to let our guard down. These measures have to be taken because wicked people make stupid decisions that affect us all!

Barbados is for Bajans. Thank god my aunt moved to the states and i don’t have to go back to that place. Those people are so rude it’s not funny anymore.

    • October 6, 2012

I totally agree. They treat strangers very bad.I never like bajans. very conceited people. They think they own the world.

As a frequent flyer, this is really starting to get on my nerves. I mean common-on man, we still in that “yes masa” vibes! So you mean to tell me that we calling for “Regional Integration” at the Caricom level and this is the non-sense we have to put up with in Barbados where we are discriminated against as Caribbean people boarding flights to other Caribbean destinations?

These are the issues we need our regional leaders to address at the Heads meetings. I call for a boycott on Grantley Adams until they lift that non-sense.

look at this other point my cbean fellows.. when we cbean ppl travel to the states or UK.. upon arrival are we re-screened as we board the jetway bridge ? NO.. WE ARE NOT.. the only reason i can think of why BGI wants to re-screen in transit pax..is because of regulations to keep Grantley Adams in the safety zone as american FAA deemed them to be..to advance certain american protocols so that barbados can have a passing grade level as many airports around the world are graded least among them are our tiny island terminals also

I guess all airports are making their own rules and regulations except Dominica. In Antigua after you step off a plane to enter the departure lounge there, they still ask you to remove belt, shoe, turn bags inside out, empty pockets etc, when you have just stepped off a closed plane and simply walk into a building straight from the plane. What rules and regulations do we have here at Melville Hall?

    • voice
      October 5, 2012

well you see unlike antigua and the other islands people don’t actually get off the plane when transiting through dominica

    • Malatete
      October 5, 2012

You are missing one crucial difference. Melville Hall is not a transit airport! Right now I would be more concerned with people arriving through the VIP facilities at Melville Hall not being subjected to scrutiny.

    **NOT JUST DOMINICANS**

DNO… is that only for Dominicans? If not it would have been best to just write “individuals travelling to Barbados”….

It doe not seem like this is only for Dominicans is it?

Well I never understood the LIAT lounge to begin with. They make us leave all the shops and food court to go to a lounge 10 miles away to still wait 45 minutes to an hour to actually board the plane.

Now with this additional aggravation the lounge makes even less sense. Penalize caribbean travellers with more red tape but make it super easy for foreigners who remain in main departure lounge.

When these extra measures were demanded they should have made the decision to close down that lounge and board all LIAT flights from the main lounge. END OF STORY! Idiots!

Islanders are proving more and more how less and less capable we are of managing anything.

      October 5, 2012

You make perfect sense. Trouble right now is that to go to LIAT departure gate you can intermingle with passengers coming off international flights from Europe/N.America and others. All fights, incl. Liat sjould leave from the same terminal building. That gate 9 is a cattle stop. Didgraceful.

it sounds like what is already being done in antigua.

DNO, is this measure only for Dominicans? That’s the impression I get when I begin to read the story; however as I continue, I realise that it applies to all persons travelling on LIAT via Barbados. Please advise your writers accordingly.
