Official gives assurance Subway is not closed

Charles insisted there is no need to panic
Charles insisted there is no need to panic

“There is no need for panic, Subway is not closed.”

These words are not ours but that of the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Subway Dominica, Heston Charles, speaking on a matter which had customers wondering what was really going on.

The entrance of the establishment has been shut for about a week now but according to Charles the closure is not permanent as the company is currently experiencing a minor hiccup in the form a main refrigerator going bad.

“The issue is technical,” he stated. “Once you have a refrigeration problem you cannot sell. All subway food are imported and they must be kept at a temperature, so resulting from that you have to close until that is rectified.”

Charles said the franchise does not want to cause any alarm or panic among customers but since the establishment has been closed for a few days now, “we have no choice but to put something official out there.”

As to the length of time that the doors of Subway will be closed to the public, Charles noted that information will be forthcoming as he is expected to receive word from the director.

DNO had recieved information of a shortage of bread at Subway and when asked about this, Charles said that although almost every thing used, except vegetables, are imported the company from time to time experience shipping shortages. He, however, noted that the lack of bread was not the problem

“Presently the situation is the refrigeration,” Charles insisted.

He apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the temporary closure, reiterating,”on a business end, Subway is not closed.”

Hmph I wonder how many of you visits subway. To tell you the truth I can see based on your comments not many, sometimes subway has no lettuce because farmers cannot supply subway with at least 100hds of lettuce per day because when one planting all planting when one have none all the others have none, but this I must say a lot of Dominicans have become health conscious because of subway, when and if subway closes do you know how many pple will be out of jobs, this has nothing to do with the government, so please before we criticize, tear down and quick to blame think of those that are hitting because of all the comments here. We all go through tough times and subway is of no exception .I pray GOD strengthens the owner and blesses him continuously so that he can bless others with a job.

Why do people support that place when they serve mostly veggies, but don’t buy them from Dominica? I would not patronize them even if they were the last place in D/ca to eat from! 8-O

Dominica doesn’t need Subway, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc. These are American fast food franchises and the main cause of obesity and diabetes on the island (and other Caribbean islands). Whatever happened to our natural resources: fresh fish, locally grown vegetables, fresh fruit? Let’s go back to mother nature’s bounty!

    • JoJo
      August 21, 2014

Elisabeth, I would not eat there either but that is my choice. Equally all Dominicans should have a choice to eat what they want, that is their right Is codfish local? Is macaroni and cheese local? No, but try and stop our people eating it!

Don’t believe that story about refrigeration. Maybe they do have problem there but you don’t close your business for that and lose all that income. A solution could be found for that, even a temporary one.Sounds more like cash flow problem to me. Perhaps they are struggling to
pay for their supplies on time. Such a shame.

Come on Heston, you proclaim to be a man of the bible and even preach, so why this blatant lie.
Tell the people the truth, the electricity supply to Subway is disconnected!
Now go and ask for forgiveness for this blatant sin and give up this position of propagandist.
My God, how can people be so blatantly dishonest.
DNO please do a quick fact check and you’ll get the truth. This is the responsibility of the journalists, to get the facts and disseminate to the people.

the least they could do was to put a notice outside the building stating that: “subway is closed/will be closed due to technical difficulties. any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted”. jussst saying…. :-|

What’s the big deal about subway closing’ some people will be out of a job but life goes on. Some countries ban fast food from opening, because of all the trash. No recycling programs where do you put all that garbage.

What happen to our bread and bulgaw, bread and hawason. No disrespect but subway in my opinion is just IMPORTED SANDWICHES.
This is where we going wrong. We think that bringing in these franchise is development. It is not particularly for small countries like ours not producing get anything.
But then again who can argue that over the last 15 years our country and people have been submitted to a concept and ideology of dependency from all perspective. Some will definitely interpreted my point as political but truth defines politics not the other way round. Why not market and promote our bulgaw and Hawason sandwhiches. Why not be creative. But no destroy agriculture, disenfranchise a people and keep them dependent.
Our businesses are suffering and the businessmen are silent-too afraid to speak. If there is one hero in Dominica it is Jerry Brisbane to me. Civil servants feeling the squeeze they too cannot talk. Construction workers grimacing but are to afraid to show their grief.
So sorrow comes at night. A faulty refrigerator shut down a business? DON’T EXPECT ME TO BELIEVE THATf TV

@ Lang Mama you know what gets me you make an uniformed statement like that and people giving you thumbs up, and this is what goes on-on DNO, for your information when you buy into a franchise you cant do your own thing no matter where you go around the world it has the same ingredients and measuring so they cant use their own bread if they don’t have any, all their products are already pre-made they can be sued or their franchise revoked from them and I know for a fact they are strict on that front cause I inquired on one before.

Real Possie you are less informed. Lang Mama was not talking about bringing a franchise and using local ingredients lang mama talking about no franchise and selling local foods. Learn to read stupesss.

@real possie you are right on taget and so rightly informed because I myself worked at a one or maybe the biggest fast food franchise in the world .everything that you have said is so true some people have no ideal what a franchise stands for and don’t even know anything about the standards of a franchise. franchise is so different compare to when you run a business of your own having to run a business on your own anything goes but running a franchine is wayyyyy different cant run it the way you want

      August 20, 2014

Hello, you have the choice NOT to buy there….and KFC, and Patty Shack….as well…no one is forcing anybody to patronise. You speak like people don’t eat local foods or rather Caribbean food.

“Our” bulgaw and hawosor? I didn’t know D/ca was producing those…

    • A Doubting Thomas
      August 21, 2014

Like the Hawason, Salt Fish, onions and oil are not imported. What we use for the bulgaw again? I would like to make some. Anyone know the recipe?

Lang Mama? Where would the flour and salt come from? This not political either.

      • Lang Mama
        August 21, 2014

Doubting Thomas good point but the fact is we would be making our own sandwiches from scratch even if we import some of the ingredients. We can make our own condiments. By the way subway does not own chicken farms ,onion farms, cattle etc. I guessing that you understand my point here.

    • JoJo
      August 22, 2014

Do we grow wheat to make the flour that makes the bread? Do our cows produce the milk to make the cheese locally?
Everybody talking about self-sufficiency but we are not! Besides people should have a choice where they spend their money.

LOL! A ‘PR’ person who uses phrases like: “they must be kept at a temperature” and “put something official out there.” Wow! This may come as a surprise to Dominica’s Subway Manager, but PR is an actual major at universities!

Morihei Ueshiba, why don’t you do better and make things a success. Everything thing must be political for some of all you. I hope that is your real name and you are not hiding behind this made up name, so people will not know who you are. So you can campaign under this fake name. Sackway tonneh, why don’t you pray for your government instead of always criticizing and blaming everything on the pm, and crying down our beautiful island. What are you doing to make things better in Dominica. May Yahweh bless our island and the people and shower us with His anointing to live together in love, peace and unity.

    August 20, 2014

The big problem in DA is that so much is imported and not produced here. When supplies are cut off, then you will really see hardship. DA could be mostly self-sufficient, however, it chooses not to be. There will be a price to be paid for this.

    • JoJo
      August 22, 2014

You know govt. prefers imports even if they don’t say so. Agricultural produce grown locally does not generate any tax, it is really tax-free. Imports give revenue and remember it is the same ministry of agriculture that issues a permit to import all those vegetables.

I’m in a similar biz and trust me we work to generate VAT for government, pay high utilities and our staff. There is meager left for the business owner. Dominica is NOT a good place to invest money. So Many restaurants have shut their doors in Dominica like La Robe Creole, Mousehole, Sutton Place Restaurant! Cornerhouse to name a few. The others are just teetering on the edge.

      • franchine worker
        August 20, 2014

        well for you all information Dominica is not the only place in the Caribbean facing that problem where business shuting down .and you need to shut your mouth by saying Dominica in not a good place to invest money is people like you who give people out there a bad impression about Dominica .you need to travel to the Virgin Ilsands especially St.Croix .people the problem is all over the world so don’t make it sound like is Dominica alone have such problem {nonesenseee}
