PM bemoans impact of global economic downturn on Caribbean countries

Skerrit

Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the global economic downturn is continuing to affect Caribbean countries.

The Prime Minister says high debt and high wage bills are among some of the challenges facing the region.

“Many of our countries in the region are facing the similar situation and several of us should to go to the International Monetary Fund to get a discipline structural adjustment program because high debt, high wage bill, low revenue generation, increase in social safety nets…so your expenditure increase and revenue depletes and you are unable to meet your commitments,“ he said.

Skerrit said his administration continues to be prudent in the management of its affairs.

  1. How much is D/ca Debt?
    May 27, 2011

FACT Up to now, like the Dual citizenship case, Dominicans are in the dark as to a date for the commencement of those two historic, classic cases in the history of Dominica.
So expect Skerritt with his mind in turmoil to spew all kinds of statements. Dominica’s debt is so huge that Govt. is ashamed to inform Dominicans of that HUGE DEBT on the Backs of Dominicans, their children and their children children and those yet unborn. The debt owed to Petro Caribe is another serious matter. But on top of that HUGE DEBT, Skerritt and his Govt. are stubborn, refusing to listen to the people who are expressing concerns continually, about that $27,000,000.00 loan from China to build a State Palace. Dominicans are advising Skerritt and Govt. that the huge sum of money should be invested in the PRODUCTIVE sector so that we could create, in part, our own wealth. To add insult to injury, local construction Companies were cast aside, not given a chance to even tender for the project. Dominican construction workers remain unemployed while jobs are given to the Chinese to build that Palace. FACT. FACT. How much of that $27,000,000.00 would circulate into the Dominican economy, among our vendors, fisher folks, farmers, shops, housewives etc. with the Chinese being awarded that contract by Govt.?

Skeritt said the Huge Debt is a challenge. But reflect on the secret Land deals, the Rubbish and Fertilizer Bobols and $$$$$$ that our Treasury would lose if private journalistic investigations did not reveal those controversial matters. Dominicans knew NOTHING about those practices. Those involved in those WRONGFUL acts, went back to pay little by little what was owed to the Treasury. But nothing has happened. No further investigation from authorities into those illegal acts. It is OK for some in our society to do those kinds of things and be protected. No dog bark. Imagine the ordinary citizen doing anything close to those acts. The TRUTH shall PREVAIL.

Is so Dominica come? WRONG is RIGHT and RIGHT IS WRONG? The DEBT will increase, the productive sectors will continue to be neglected and decline further, unemployment will increase, but Dominicans, especially the Tax Payers, will be burdened with more HUGE DEBTS. Let the TRUTH SET US FREE.

I would always think that our country has been plagued with visionless, unambitious, noncreative leaders over the years is why Dominica is always at the back looking at other countries while they sale of to development. And that is half of the problem, the other half is our people tolerate mediocre and dont understand what development entails.

We vote for people who smile to us, lie to us and even when we realise they are not doing what they was elected to do we make excuses for them, instead of holding them responsible for their promises and actions. The leaders are just taking advantage of a country that settles foor less, doesnt hold any of its leaders responsible for anything.

Then when the lack of good paying jobs and no opportunities become unbearable we buy a ticket and run away to other places where the leaders had the gull to be creative, ambitious and dedicated in developing their country.

When is this nonsense going to stop……???

I SUPPORT YOU 1000 %. Dominica has never been exposed to soo much fre money as we have over the last 5-8 years . How many times we heard about people who have stumbled upon a fortune and only because these people had no vision ( as you’ve said) or understanding of valuable investments the money went down the drain. Our story in Dominica is no different .We have received money from China , Venezuel and elsewhere and there is nothing significant to show. Party followers will tell us about a stadium, west coast road rehabilitation and a few pink houses and they call that development at 11 years.

Just the tip of the iceberg reasons why i deceided to migrate 20 yrs ago. I have visited about manytimes sometimes x2/yr and each time i do i say it’s my last. But i have my real friends at home so i must visit and share precious moments with them. While we trip on our favorite meals , drinks desserts and jokes they give me the scoops and the truth. It hurts so much i wanna do something about it.That lad who is alledgedly the P.M.I do not know never seen him in person nor do i care to.i have heard the block speak and i wonder. they don’t teach speech in school no more in the caribbean?I often wonder wha has become of my native landWhen i was living in DA say a decade or before i migrated we had more class and were quick to put P.m opposition people in their places, when necessary to day no one has interest in civic duties no wonder half baked cookies become P.Ms let alone minisiters.

when will black countries realize that the IMF will never do anything in our best interest. They will encourage policies that will make western countries and their leader richier so that can afford to live in million dollar homes and stay in $3000 a night hotels while we cant afford new roads.

  5. a mind thing
    May 27, 2011

its a mind thing. if you think you dont have money or you lack it then you will act and operate and yur fortune will be : NO MONEY. however we are very aware of our wealthy and potential service and products which can brign in revenue. our “heads” are focused on negativity therefore that is all we will see and get. Dominica not brokes, Dominica just dont know how to express herself properly for her “general” BENEFIT! its a mind thing… i satisfied, my mind told me so!, therefore I AM!

Why don’t he cast the first stone by taking a wage cut instead of professing something we all know.
Is ther a bigger problem the reason he’s lamenting before it happens or is DA going bankrupt?

ARE YOU SAYING THAT I SHOULD COLLECT HIS SALARY TOO.

ISN’T IT STRANGE THAT YOU WOULD DEMAND A WORKABLE SOLUTION FROM ME BUT NOT FROM THE PEOPLE YOU VOTED THATS BEING PAID BY YOUR HARD EARN MONEY.

ARE YOU SAYING THAT THESE POLITICIAN SHOULD JUST SAY THINGS BAD IN THE WORLD AND LEAVE IT LIKE THAT.

ARE YOU NEW TO DNO ? FROM THE DAYS OF CAKAFETE TO NOW ON DNO MY NAME HAS NEVER CHANGE AND I HAVE BEEN MAKING A LOT OF RECOMMENDATION THAT WOULD TRANSFORM THE ECONOMY OF DOMINICA.

FOR EG . I HAVE HAVE ARTICULATED ON NUMEROUS OCASSION BEFORE IT HAPPEN,THAT RENOVATING THE AIRPORT AND THE SO CALL NIGHT LANDING MAKE NO SENSE RATHER THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE SOURCE A LOAN PLUS THE GRANT MONEY TO BUILD AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. MY FAVOURITE QUOTE WAS ” IF PLANES DON’T LAND IN DAY WOULD THEY LAND AT NIGHT”. i SAID IT BEFORE THAT NIGHT LANDING WAS NOT GOING TO BE THE SOLUTION BUT YOU GUYS CELEBRATED LIKE FOOLS. . THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN RUNWAY. THE KEY TO AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IS HAVING THE REQUIRED LENGTH OF AIR STRIP. THEN THE FENCING, CCTV, SCANNING MERCHINES , BUILDING , ACCESS CONTROL AND ETC WOULD COME VERY EASY.

i DON’T NEED TO EXPLAIN TO YOU ABOUT THE IMPACT & MULTIPLIER EFFECT SUCH INVESTMENT WOULD HAVE GENERATED FOR US. THIS EXPLANATION HAVE ALREADY BEEN EXHAUSTED BY ME ON DNO.

THIS WAS ONE OF MY MANY RECOMMENDATION ,MADE TO YOUR GOVERNMENT. i NEED NOT TELL YOU ABOUT MY PROPOSE IDEA OF THE WINWARD ISLAND AGRO- PROCEESING PLANTS , TRANSNATIONAL TOURISM AMONG OECS COUNTRIES, OECS/ CARICOM CONTAINER VESSEL, DEVLOPMENT OF THE ENTERTAINMENT SECTOR IN DOMINICA BY ALLOWING CASINO’S AND EXOTIC DANCE CLUBS , INCREASE IN WAGES AND SALARY IN DOMINICA ( IN OTHER TO BOOST DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION) ETC . REQUEST EXPLANATION IF YOU INTERESTED.

i HAVE CALLED FOR THE REDUCTION OF TAXES ON FUEL ( IN 2008 CRUDE PRICES WENT TO 148 USD PER BARREL AND GAS PRICES NEVER PEAK TO 14 EC PER GALLON AND TODAY CRUDE PRICES IS JUST ABOVE 100USD PER BALLER AND GAS PRICES IS ALMOST 16EC PER GALLON IN DOMINICA.)

AN ELIMINATION OF THE TAX COMPOUNDING AT THE CUSTOM . ( IMAGINE THEY ADD THE DUTY , SERVICE TAX, AND ENVIRONMNET TAXE ON THE CIF VALUE THEN HIT YOU THE VAT AFTER )
I SAID SINCE BEFORE THAT YOU CAN’T INCREASE TAX ES IN A COUNTRY THATS IN RECESSION.

Surprise!!! Surprise!!!….The IMF????? Did the PM say the IMF????? what happened to the CMF (Chinese Monetary Fund)?? What happened to the bottomless well of money in China? Have we finally realized that Dominica is not and will not for the foreseeable future, generate enough revenue to repay its debts? What happens when the Chinese are forced to say NO?? Do you think the IMF will give a handout at no cost??? Let’s wait and see.
