PM Skerrit promises hospitality service jobs in the north

hospitality servicesClose to 100 participants of a hospitality service training program in the north of the island have been guaranteed jobs if they successfully complete the said program.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made the promise during his speech at the opening ceremony of a three-month Hospitality Service course in Portsmouth on the weekend.

“I will say to you and guarantee you that if you successfully complete the training program, your employment will be guaranteed in the north of Dominica and you will be off the unemployment list in the country,” he said.

The course begins on Monday, October 7 and participants will be trained in a number of areas ranging from front desk representative to bar-tendering and will see persons from the north and north-eastern parts of the island taking part.

The prime minister cautioned participants to take the training seriously.

“Let me send a word of caution to you, it is important that you complete the training sessions,” he stated. “You cannot come today and come next week. You have to come every single day in order to successfully complete the training module. If you fail to successfully complete the training module, you will be placing yourself in difficulty of one, graduating, and secondly, critically, getting yourself employed.”

Executive Director of the Dominica Employment and Small Business Support Agency, Alexander Stephenson, noted that the program has many objectives.

“The objectives of the apprenticeship program is to enhance job creation, increase local tax base, encourage private investment that can expand economic development opportunities, and refocus public spending on training by targeting vocational training and microenterprise skills on linkage with export sectors,  and promoting  in-firm training through the judicious use of financial incentives,” he noted.

The 98 participants were further urged to register their names, upload their CV’s on the Agency’s website, and complete the agency’s skills bank registry indicating their skills set and areas of competencies, so that the “the management of the Moroccan hotel and other DHTA member hotels, for example, can be informed of these skilled workers availability to work in a number of positions”.

The three month training is costing the government over $121,000; a stipend will also be expected to be paid to participants at the end of each week.

Once a week, the participants will go to the Dominica State College (DSC) for training and on the other four days of the week, the training will be held in various locations in the north.

The program is a joint partnership between the Dominica Employment and Small business Support Agency and the DSC.

Somebody please explain how a government so focused on buying loyalty and votes can create jobs and grow the economy when the economy is dead. How can a government administration be taken seriously when all the administration does is react to cries of sokous here , bondieur there or blue was there. The administration can focus on developmental strategies by giving a few labor operatives $500 K in St Joseph, $200 K in Soufriere, a hastened waterline project only to be totally redone.
Skerrit need to be playing tooks not running a country.

Young people dont allow yourself to be fooled by the PM and his gifts, just remember it’s election season he will say and do anything for votes, so take the training and at the end vote them out of office because
they just dont know how to create employment othe Island

All those that are criticizing Skerrit must understand the global recession is also affecting Dominica. Dominica is in the world. Those who are fighting to lead cannot themselves create employment but they have an answer for everybody.
Isaac wants to be in Ministry but he cannot run a bakery in Portsmouth. Lennox wants to create employment for 70,000 people but he complains about not being able to get a job and he cannot create one for himself.
Ask matt where he living. Garcon allyou too hypocrite.Prevost was a businessman as long as workers was in power. As soon as Workers gone business die. What does dat say.
Skeritt you are trying if your best isnt good enough tough luck.

any type of training to advance your skill and knowledge is valuable. To the people who have the opportunity to do the training please make the best out of the training. In the long run you will benefit. To the people who always try to make a political point listen up; Portsmouth has been insignificant in changing the course of Dominica in terms of politics and leadership because of their ignorance and political polarization. From the Days of Freedom, to UWP and now to DLP who Portsmouth have voted ” from since I know myself” (to steal from Seramix lyrics). No matter what was happening in the country, Portsmouth was, and will never be a political game changer because historically we have voted who?…Yes exactly…any of the answers will be correct. Pick 1. So the revolution that is going on right now which started because of some land issue which the same people who crying about it have gotten and sold, is and will be very insignificant as at the end of the day, Portsmouth will remain insignificant unless one of two things happen. Labour losing in Portsmouth will be insignificant….will not change the landscape of elections. So in order to change the course of history and be significant in Dominica Political story, there only one thing that Portsmouth can do and that is to change their voting habits. Some call on painting the town blue, we need to stop seeing in colours and see in development…

    My humble opinion.

Righteous I agree with your point of view however how can people become color blind when the people are indoctrinated by those who enforce color loyalty through handouts.

It is unreasonable to assume that poor people will discard color prejudice when the poor people themselves are forced to drink from a cup that is color coded for one reason only and that is to remind the poor people that the drink that they are fed will only come from the color coded cup.

This is exactly what the current administration has done and this is not to suggest that the UWP is innocent. The constant bribery and the deliberate effort to keep people loyal by occasional handouts and promises – this has been the MO of the Roosevelt Skerrit operation – gwo va petit le pluis.

So I agree with you – the only way to develop our country is to develop people not enslave their minds. It is only people with an independent mind that dare to go places. When Ma Etelle is promised a two bedroom house and in waiting for 11 years for that house that is 11 years that Ma Etelle sat down and did not do anything for herself. Then election campaign becomes the excitement of the day and Ma Etelle is promised not just the house but a Flat Screen Tv – Well ma Etelle reinforces her color loyalty for another 5 years and the cycle goes on

Because of the popularity of Skeritt,I never thought I would see the day when he would be running scared of a political leader. Since the appointment of Mr. Lennox Linton as political leader of the UWP, Skeritt has been going nuts. It has been promises and more promises. We were told by Reggie that Skerrit had 300 jobs for young Dominicans. Later, Skeritt himself promised Dominicans 500 jobs and now they are promised 98 jobs. DaVibes is reporting Skerrit to have apologized to the people of Petite Savanne because of the bad roads they have had for thirteen years. Can someone remind me of the last time Skeritt apologized to anyone publicly. Their has been a significant drop as regards his travelling. Skeritt claims to be a hard working Prime Minister every day he is on the job. One would expect on a Sunday, the man would be spending time at church seeking God’s help for the betterment of Dominica or being at home with his pregnant wife, but instead, he chose to travel to PromiseVille in Portsmouth while Mr. Ian Douglas was absent from the constituency, and according to callers of the hot seat this morning was causing a daybar,a roro, as regards lands which were promised to the people. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next, Mr. Lennox Linton is watching.

Malgraysa are you surprise at the Morocco Hotel deal – The entire Morrocco Hotel was built on lies. First off governments don’t give governments hotels. Never heard of this. Everything that have happened re this hotel tells of a systematic coverup. The government of Morrocco did not give the country of Dominica a hotel. Let it be known that the Hotel is the venture of a private Morroccan businessman – details will and bound to show up.
How it is that a government donated a hotel to host night landing LIAT overnighting crew and in a twinkle of an eye the hotel moves from Woodfordhill to Echartville in Portsmouth.
How it is that the government of Morocco would provide a hotel to the government of Dominica when our hotels in Dominica are operation at 1/3 below full occupancy. Why it is that the Nassiefs who are suppose to be Red did not get a chane to oppose the hotel. More questions than answers
Why it is that the government of Morocco donate a hotel to the country of Dominica and then sent Moroccans to even put the tiles and light bulb
Let us see how long this lie is going to stand up –
My ranting here may seem off the headline however the theme of lies and deception is consistent with Roosevelt Skerrit.
It is time that the people of Lagoon ,Woodforhill, Carib Territory wake up and realize that the country is being manipulated by a group of con men.

The government must also provide an update on Francesco Corallo our ambassador for the FAO – the latest news is that he turned himself in to the Italian Police after hiding out in the Dominican Republic for almost a year. August 16 I believe is when he did. Our government owe the people a response on the matter – he carried our Diplomatic passport and we the people want answers

    • Lougaoo Mem
      October 7, 2013

Thanks! Good questions, and we know the truth as far as lies and deception go. This is not going to stop until the people collectively, island wide put a stop to it. The lies have no more legs to stand.

Everytime this man opens his mouth lies come spouting out. What have you done for the ‘North’ in the last 6 years? Nothing, absolutely nothing! No sorry, I am wrong you did plenty for Vieille Case. The road from Portsmouth to the airport is a big joke, full of holes and single file bridges – some might say dangerous. What have you done for the tourism industry up North. Nothing, in fact you destroyed the little tourism that was in Calibishie. Even the expats are leaving one after one because the village is totally neglected and starved of government funds. Having said all that, it’s the peoples fault voting for you blindly. You only spend money in areas where you need votes. Voters wake up and smell the coffee!!!

    • Anthony Ismael
      October 7, 2013

I never understood why the road from Portsmouth to Marigot was not deemed essential. This is a vital link between the two communities. Furthermore, if you desire to develop an area, infrastructure will allow the free movement of people and commerce.
Dominica still functions on a Plantation-Style design where, Roseau is the main house and the surrounding villages are the out-houses.
Much more needs to be done in the North of the island.

I wish that we, as Dominicans would stop being so naive. This is not the answer to the long term unemployment that is having a huge, huge, huge impact on the island. Not just only amongst the youth, but within all sectors of Dominican society. By dribbling small numbers of jobs to a country that is already haemorraging from an unstable economic climate is bad governance and a knee jerk reaction on what is truthfully underlying my precious Dominica.

There has to be a long term vision sustainibility in creating a mechanism for long term employment, so that instead of crumbs falling sporadically from the masters table, we get the full loaf of bread.

By the way, what happened to the alleged 500 jobs promised by the end of September?

It would be helpful if he gave details of the prospective places of employment that he has in mind. Certainly the new Moroccan hotel development can not be one of them. it looked like an abandoned building site with no guard in sight when I passed there yesterday and must be well behind schedule. When can we expect it to be fully operational and proide employment for the local people?
