Protest continues at PWC

Letang

Public Works Corporation (PWC) staff continued protest action Monday against their management who they said have refused to make efforts towards addressing their problems.

Public Works staff claim that they have not been paid for several fortnights and government has failed to contract them for major projects currently underway in Dominica.

The workers are also claiming that as a result of the late payments of salaries, financial institutions are taking legal action against them for their various loan commitments.

General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union Thomas Letang says the Union has explored all possible means of resolving the matter.

He says the protest action will continue until the matter is fully resolved.

“As long as we do not have a concrete commitment from the authorities that the situation will improve, that the people will get their salaries and wages, that they will be paid on time, that the issue of gratuity will be paid to the staff and other issues we will continue to protest. As long as we don’t get those issues resulted, we will continue our protest action and it will begin to take different forms. They need to make sure that the public works get viable projects, we will continue. We are not stopping. We have exhausted all efforts to get the issues sorted out and we have not succeeded and we have resorted to protest action. We don’t stop until we get result,” he said.

If I put in a hard days work, I expect my salary at the end of the fortnight/month, so why shouldn’t the workers at PWC.

I see this problem as a very bad Management issue. I’m not going to give Mr Letang a pat on the back, because he should have stood up for the workers long ago.

Jobs a scarce , so they dont even have the option of going elsewhere (and Management knows this, I’m sure there getting paid).

Lets hope that someone on the Board has a conscience.

Ahh what have we come to. are we trying to do like people in Cuba where some of them work for the state for very little if anything at all. Why are our people treated that way. I wonder if the parl reps and ministers go one month without pay…..Well I don’t think so…..They are probably the first to get paid while the people who are doing the real work are treated like slaves and are not considered…..I think the minister should be the last to get paid if there is anything left to pay them. They are the ones who put the country how it is, letting the chinese and other forigners get all the road works and the poor Dominicans cannot get anything to do…..Man that is so sad and I think all Dominicas should join that protest.

I am reading some genuine comments and seeing that people are disliking them. Put urself in these people shoes. my dad works at PWC and i have seen the toll it has taken on us. I can say thank God my mum has a good paying salary that can sustain the family but i look at my uncle who also works there and is struggling because bank calling him, mortgage payment late and what ever other little expenses or debts he has can’t be met. its real saddening and a serious issue. Blackmoore and the board not saying anything but i bet all there damn bills pay when other suffering. HAVE A HEART MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

People this is all in an effort to make PWD irrelevant so the Chinese can get THEIR property. Think for a while people, isn’t this ironic. this is one of the times in Dominican history that the most roads are being redone, and at the same time PWD workers are crying for salaries , think for a while people , please I beseech you all to think

      November 22, 2011

I WANT TO SYMPATHY WITH THOSE HARD WORKERS AT PWD.I THINK THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PAY THESE WORKERS WITH IMIDIATE EFFECT.BUT AT THE SAME TIME ONE MUST REMEMBER THAT THE CHINESE PROJECT IS A GIFT TO DOMINICA AND THE GOVERNMENT DONT HAVE MUCH TO DO AS OF HOW THE ROAD WORK GOES.SO PLEASE DON’T BLAME THE CHINESE CAUSE WHEN THEY ARE THROUGH AND THEY LEFT IS U AND I THAT IS GOING TO ENJOY IT.YOU AGREE?

The PWC challenge is way beyond labour and employment. It is an economic challenge they are faced with and it is affecting their ability to perform the employment contrats. Strike action will only be effective if the Government gives the PWC the capacity to make an economic difference. I am sure Mr. Letang is aware of this and it may be his strategy to get to the Government by taking action against PWC. I wish to suggest that he focusses on more than one front……he needs to get a more direct way to petition the State.

1979: A few months ago u said your fridge full your cupboard also and u have money if hurricane damage people house u will not shelter them no way u will not help them and today u crying. 1979 go ask your creater forgiveness for what u said your tongue is dangerous. you are a crooked.

      • 1979
        November 22, 2011

I will agree that I’m crooked, but no devil sitting in position of authority, elected by me cannot beat me at playing cards. It seems u have a file on me! I’m glad u paying attention…. Now find out about the bids that went in for the carib reserve road project without PWC being given the opportunity to make a bid. This is more important than what’s on my fridge.

        November 22, 2011

By the way, I want no forgiveness for what I said, we appear so shocked about certain revelations, like the guy locked up for 26 years while others knew about this…I will not stay silent…to stay silent is to side with the oppressor.. So if u want me to stay quiet and die…why should I offer u shelter when the storm hit, YOU KNEW ALL ALONG IT WAS COMING but like every other non believer you did nothing to guard urself. Now I must lay down and die quiet for your sake?? Fools run to their demise, and no drowning man is taking me and my family down with him.. I more concerned whether my children will forgive me for saying and doing NOTHING!!
