Speaker of House thinks more women needed in parliament

Boyd-Knights

Dominica has failed to achieve a target of 30 percent of women in parliament, a goal parliaments around the world have set, Speaker of the House of Assembly Alix Boyd Knights has revealed.

“We are nowhere near that in Dominica,” she said.

Boyd-Knights, who has been speaking about the majestic role that women can play in national development, believes Dominica must “keep the momentum going.”

“There’s been a survey conducted recently that is saying that in the countries where you have women in parliament and more women in leadership roles, these countries are far more developed in social terms than in the other countries where that is not the case, ” she stated.

St. Lucia too, she noted, has fallen short of the 30 percent Millennium Development Goal. “It’s only one woman in the Parliament,” she pointed out.

Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35

According to Christianity, women can’t even speak in the churches furthermore to be Prime Minister of a nation or speaker of the house. Women are out there campaigning, so sad how they have deviated from scripture. What an abomination according to the bible!

I didn’t say it, that’s what the bible says. :-D

I think that women should play an active role in politics, no doubt about that, however, it seems if Dominica is a “christian nation” then why don’t the pastors and priests speak against those things? Aren’t they teachers of the scripture? Aren’t they supposed to be filled with the “Holy Ghost?” I think christianity has become twisted in it’s application in Dominica. Hardly anyone follows the message of Jesus, it’s all B.S

I think that it should be noted that Alix Boyd Knight is currently the chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians and won comfortably against other women. Although some of us may not like the role she takes on in Parliament here in Dominica, she is making strides on the international market

Very revealing that you make reference to her making strides on the “MARKET”. Or was this just a subconscious slip of the pen? Of course, women should be represented in all walks of life. They are the ones, who give birth, have a longer life span and hold families together. Come to the fore ladies and don’t hide your talents under a bushel!

Hon. Speaker, The manner in which you conduct the business of the House with such bias is not encouraging to any decent women in Dominica to take up your challenge, women in Dominica are better off in advancing their intellectual base and space to take on the challenges of leadership in dominica

This I disagree with. Women are not in the minority in parliament because of the doings of men as it was in the past. The fact is women are more reluctant nthan men to get into politics because of the rigours involved in that profession.Arguably women a more nurturing and would rather stay with her kids than be out there campaigning of traveling. Women are also gennerally refered to as the softer sex and would find it difficult dealing with the sort of bad talking which have become, shamefully so, part of our politics.
So let’s give it the ring it really has women has been in the forefront of politics for years and most stay away because of the above mentioned reasons. I leaved abroard for a while and not many people new of Dominica and those who did, new us by one name Dame Mary Eugenia Charles.

I am all for more women in parliament and in leadership positions but I have to say that Ms. Boyd-Knights has definitely not shown a good example for women to follow. If a distinguished woman like Mrs. Neva Edwards would have said that, I would be up in the air.

My opinion is for Ms. Knight to behave in such a manner that women would want to emulate her.

Barring this, I thing it is an absolutely wonderful idea to have more women involved in parliament, in decision making and in running the affairs of the state. I think it would definitely make a positive difference in our country.
