Thieves target Melvina’s Bar, again

Melvina's is a popular hangout spot
Melvina’s  Bar is a popular hangout spot

It appears that as Christmas season gets underway thieves are on a prowl in Dominica with several reports of robberies and break-ins, one involving a preschool, being reported.

Businesswoman, Melvina Boyer, who owns the popular hangout spot, ‘Melvina’s Bar and Restaurant’ located in Pointe Michel, is the latest victim.

Boyer, who began 2015 on a terrible note when her business was burglarized, had to relive the nightmare all over again.

She told DNO that the business place was burglarized and her entire music system was stolen in the wee hours of Wednesday.

“The thief took all the music system by parts,” she said. “It cost me a lot of money to do the music system and the person took the two expensive speakers.”

Boyer, who opines the thieves had a vehicle, believes the act has its roots in jealousy.

“I normally play music on a Friday and I think the person tried to mess me up for me to not have business on a Friday and Saturday again,” she stated.

She said she sensed something was wrong since she could not sleep properly on Tuesday night.

“I felt something was wrong because I woke up about 2:00 am and I couldn’t fall back asleep,” she stated. “I sensed it. It was like a message I got.”

The businesswoman said for the time being there will be no “bacchanal” at Melvina’s Bar and it will be taking on a softer note, primarily with fish nights from Monday to Sunday.

“Bacchanal entertainment is finished for now since it’s not that easy to get another music system,” she noted.

Additionally, Boyer said Tropical Storm Erika incurred further expenses on her.

“Following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, it cost me $12,000 to repair damages done to my business, which was also an expense,” she remarked. “I cannot get another (music) system, since that system cost me close to $15,000, because it was ordered.”

She noted that the fish nights will be quiet with soft music.

“People can come, sit down and eat fish…they can have fish on the grill and have nice soft music,” he stated.

Police are investigating the matter.

Earlier this year, it cost Boyer about $25,000 to $30,000 to repair damages to Melvina’s Bar which was burglarized and a number of expensive drinks, among other items, were stolen.

Still the businesswoman remains resolute after the latest incident.

“That didn’t break me down,” she said.

IDK why people like to use God to do their wickedness. Pray on their head and tell God to do them what?

When someone prays, that doesn’t necessarily means their prayer is directed to the Almighty Father. The Bible says that satan is father to many! So, don’t assume that when a person prays it’s to the supreme God. The devil accepts prays, adoration, worship and offerings from people because he wants to be equal with God the creator. I hope you have learnt something.

Melvina, I don’t make it to Point Michel much, but my kids and I fondly remember playing dominoes with you this summer. Best wishes recovering from this ridiculous affront, and may these perpetrators be swiftly brought to justice.

You cannot leave anything of value any place but hidden where it is unlikely to be found. That is the bottom line. These thieves have no shame and will never learn their lesson. It is amazing that there is so much stolen property on this island that there has to be a market for it somewhere and the police can\’t seem to find much of anything.

for something like this to be happening over and over, i think that you should put up Security cameras. to protect you business. this is not good news at all.

    • smdh
      December 10, 2015

the purchase price of the drinks were expensive. Like the johny walker blacks, the grey goose etc. That is not bush rum for 2.50. Melivna cannot lower the price she paying to buy them from the distributor. she cna only lower her price she sells it, and even then she will make a loss.
its basic business if you in it for profit.

I am sorry to know that she was targeted again. I am wondering if she has an alarm/security system at her business. If she had, when they broke and enter this would activate the alarm system. The sound would alert some people nearby. As a matter of fact, if she had one which is connected to her home with a camera, she would have been immediately alerted and could see the thieves.
It probably is the act of more than one person. Some wicked people. Your punishment is waiting for you. It appears you do not fear Satan and Hell.
The police should issue directives to nationals that if anyone approaches them to purchase musical parts or other, they should be suspicious and question the person where they got it from. Those who sell any item to others should produce a receipt as proof of purchase, from a store. If some D/cans do not know that, the police authorities should inform them about it. This could deter thieves from stealing and selling the items.

You are a night club person. Me, and my family including many people I know do not go to night clubs or even day clubs. These days they are not safe. We do not go sight-seeing to look for locations of clubs, especially if they are out of town..
This does not prevent me from feeling sorry for her and offering some sort of advice.
She needs a security alarm system with a camera. If she did not have one, I hope she seriously considers installing a good quality one. It may be expensive but it is worth it

The church stopped teaching about hell. no such physical place.

      • Face the Facts
        December 10, 2015

It may be the church you go to. You should also have TV and Radio religious programs. You will hear it very well. Do not deceive yourself otherwise that Hell will become extinct because it is not mentioned. Some people prefer not talking and hearing about it.
Saint Paul said: “Teach and remind people of these things.”
If it is not spoken about in the church, you should address it to the church authority. Every Christian knows what occurred in Heaven when Satan was thrown out of Heaven. It is not fiction but a fact.
This reminds me of what I heard (I have it on tape) that a woman went to confession to the late Saint Padre Pio of Italy, a pious priest. She said to him she does not believe in Hell. He replied: “When you get there you will find out.”
There is no need to argue with anyone about it. This is what I say: “On that day you will find out. May it not be too late.”
Google the life of this holy man and others. You will learn much.

Sure you did not drink too much? You suggesting Melvina’s is providing some kind of social service and govt. should pay her? That would be like rewarding the burglars, not so?
Melvina is a business woman and a good one too but the location of the place and the way it is built make it an obvious target. That is the reality.

It is so sad to read about this new break-in at Melvina’s. It seems like there are a set of individuals determined to threaten the peace and safety of our Citizens and their property. This has to stop NOW! To those who imply that this blessed Dominica Labour Party Government is not interested or concerned about this spate of crimes, you could not be more wrong. This Administration is working closely with the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force to effectively identify, address and curtail the occurrences of these crimes around the Island. This is an effort that will require the cooperation and assistance of the Public if it is to be successful. For Melvina’s and all the other businesses and people who have been senselessly victimized help is on the way. Law, order and justice WILL prevail!!!

Private sector is private sector. If thats the case, every business could fabricate a theft or disaster in hopes of being recompensated. Understand that going into business is a RISK. in business, you have to be RISK AVERSE. In other words, protect yourself from unforseen instances like natural disaster and theft. Her location is in the middle of nowhere, dark dark dark. sometimes the street light off sometimies on. The place is sided with lattice ONLY in some areas. no cameras even. And you want the government to GIVE her back what she failed to protect? Next you ask the govt to come and clean the place and fry fish for her. Take responsibility for your own self and community and businesses. That is not Gov’t responsibility padna.

NEVER EVER GIVE PEOPLE THE SATISFACTION THAT THEY CRAVE FOR. Bad minded people these days pree hard. Your very close friend could be the one who wants to see you fall. Find another music system. You can find a very good one online at a very reasonable price. We all know this will have some kind of effect on the business so please DO NOT give them the satisfaction! Where there is a will there is a way. If God can bring you to it, he will bring you through it!

People as you are the cause of the dilemmas of Dominica as thieves who go about stealing what do not belong to them. You make excuses for them, exonerate them and uphold them. Those same ones probably were school drop-outs. Obviously, they may not be able to get a job. On the other hand some may be employed and they steal from others. Having a job does not prevent them from stealing/committing crimes.
Therefore, what you stated is crap. Cease placing the blame on the PM. You too will pay for judging him. What have you done and are doing for anyone and for your country?

Where committing crimes are concerned, thieves do not discriminate. Whoever is on their mind to target or have decided to target, they will do so. They also target a place which is easy to break and enter and steal.
What you may not have considered, they could first go to the place and size up the situation., as we say. They look all around them, all over the place and think of the easiest manner to also raid it.
The owner should look at her patrons and note if some faces are new, if she recognized them previously or not. Some pretend to be patrons but are patrons in disguise, waiting for the first opportunity to break and enter and steal.
