Truckers concerned about police action

President of the Tipper Truckers Association Earl Laudat said truckers are concern about an investigation by police regarding a protest action in September last year.

Members of the association protested against a decision by French contractor Jacque Garddakhan to import trucks and drivers from Guadeloupe to work on his road projects around Dominica.

He said he was served with tickets by a policeman on Saturday for obstruction of traffic.

He is describing the situation as unfortunate.

“We got a first set of tickets for bad tires, mirrors and number plates. We got these tickets on Friday. On Saturday they came back and we got tickets for obstruction of traffic. We are discussing it with our lawyers. But the inspector who was on the scene of the protest came and told us that he was doing an investigation and that he was rounding up people who were there,” Laudat said.

He said the truckers did not intend to cause any problems and protesting was the only way they could let Garddakhan know how serious they are.

One is of the opinion that foreigners can come to Dominica anytime, any day and play mas. How come this foreign Big money man getting so many contracts. He over powering the people in the poor communities he does the mining. Look now he is bring his own trucks and so forth to do work in Dominica instead of giving Dominicans a dollar. Well This fella is like a real big piece of steak in Dominica. Imagine this man name always calling in Dominica, if its not layou , its calihaut and so forth… but you know what? So they like it…….. Dominica got to many issues —— no wonder they got an oil refinery and now they paying cents for gas…………….. Dream on! Like People are dreaming
To many foreign malay and comessss

Can’t you-all people see that the truckers are being penalized for protesting? And that the ‘Government of DOMINICA’ is seeing to it that they are penalized for protesting (for their rights as Dominicans) against a Foreign Company? So sad when your own Government doesn’t even back you up against imported labor, but instead gives you a kick for trying to say something for yourself -when you elected them to see to your best interests!!!!!

And now, these days, these people want you to tell them -well in advance- when (date), exact time, where (street route), style, and for how long you will be staging any protest on island, so that they can send their police officers (the special unit the Prime Minister recently assembled within the police force for these kind of occasions) to ‘CONTROL’ your protest or demonstration -that is if it passed their approval to go ahead in the first place. They are trying to put a squeeze on the very manner in which we speak out in this nation.

This is serious stuff my people. Watch out!

The list the Investigator may be compiling may very well be a list of persons to charge for just being part of the protest.

Some of us want to eat our cake and at the same time we want to keep it. The laws of the country are to be enforced when there`s violations of our said law one must understand that we have to face the conquences. We cannot want to demonstrate for our rights and at the same time violate others right from going about their law business i was delayed for hours because of that said demonstration and that was wrong, for innocent people to be hindered by others there must be a blance and if the police is there to enforce the laws of our land that they must do! He did not say that the violations did not exist so we are to assume they were given in violation of our traffic laws. Some of us have to understand that the police force is not a football to kick around when we cannot have our way. Again the law is the law when some of us are going to understand that?? I hope in my life time. Remember those of us that travel to other countries do respect their laws so lets do the same in Dominica.

What we are experiencing now is just the begining of things to come. Where there is injustice in one place there is injustice in all other places. let us face the truth when some people are rewarded for their crime others who commit one crime no matter what the nature of the crime is that they are entitled to the same treatment.

The only way to clean up this mess is to start cleaning up the top offices and authorities in Dominica.

I am so happy for that. Those illiterate truck drivers block my passage for how many hours and think they will get away with it.

What about my right , my democracy. How can you just block the road and not allow me freedom of movement.

      February 8, 2011

People like you amuse me. You are complaining about the indescretion of the truck drivers and that they should be punished for breaking the law. You are the same supporting the criminal action of the PM and st Jean.
What is your position WIKILEAKS – Do you stand for situational morality or are you just straight out a full grown hypcrite.
Are you looking for sympathy or is this just another attempt to support a party or politicians by denouncing the truckers demonstration.Note that I am not hear to support wrong doing and for the sake of humanity and the well being of our country you should do the same.
The truckers had a legitimate concern and their action may have been an inconvinience to others but don’t down play the truckers concerns. If you are not old enough may I let you know that Charles Saverin , Alvin Knight and others drove the country into unrest and chaos because the government would not listen. Charles was considered a hero by some and a villain by others . Today Charles is a hero to those who saw him as a villain during the 1978 revolt. My point is when you take a stand be firm and fair not only to yourself but to others.

Some Dominicans really act uneducated. Anyway one day we will learn to make sensible contributions to real issues. I don’t understand why people don’t just stay quiet if all they have is negative or plain rumbling

    February 8, 2011

I cannot understand we as people, inspite of the truckers fighting for their cause it is not right for them to obstruct traffic including the Gentleman trying to off load his truck. They violate the law so they must face the consequences. We have to be fair let them fight their cause another way but not preventing people or anyone going on their daily business. Earl is toooo… full of himself and arrogant and think what he says is right. He must set the example for his association.

hhhhmmmm it’s all psychological tactics,,,, these tickets have nothing to do with the issue,,, ya’ll might as well pay them,,,, to get it out of the way,,, u see these things are used to keep the process dragging,,, when u pay attention to these minor things that don’t matter u actually do what they want u to,,,so u’ll be fighting tickets while the main course is on the backburner,,, just pay that n keep moving on with the case at hand,,,,

Your Government is trying to provoke anger among people so that they will act rashly and violently so that the Government will have an excuse to call a state of emergency, when they will have carte blanche to get rid of the persons whom they think oppose them. Do not be angered.
