Union leader calls for transparency as LIAT move to close city offices

The union representing employees at LIAT has asked the management of the company to be transparent as it moves towards finalizing the closure of all its tickets offices.

Secretary Treasurer of the Waterfront and Allied Workers Union, Kertiste Augustus says LIAT’s city offices will be officially closed on July 16th but Dominican staff has not yet received this notification.

Augustus says the Union has resolved that they would require three months notice of redundancy.

He said up to yesterday morning, members of staff in Dominica did not receive any letter indicating so.

“It appears to me one of two things will happen. That one, the city offices will not be closed on July 15th, or two, it can be closed on the condition that LIAT pays in renew of notice. The unions have resolved that we want three months notice of redundancy,” he said.

Augustus said the management of LIAT must be committed to the statements that they made to the Union representatives and carry it out.

“You cannot have that matter going and going and going. Every time we make an intervention, LIAT is responding and nothing is happening. If they are serious about the closure, we are prepared to give consideration to the question of the closure on the basis of the offer that they have made,” he said.

Mr. Augustus, you made two overseas visits to meet with LIAT, to Barbados and Antigua, presumably to negotiate this matter. I also presume these trips were made at the union’s expense. You can not now come and tell us that you do not know what will happen to your few members, who will be affected. Otherwise what would be the purpose of these trips?

mr augustus i wish you were so committed to the other 28 employees who have been working with and expired union contract for the last 2 years…you are very ineffective as a unionist…i’m 100% in support of the closure.
