Claiming there is at least 40 percent unemployment among the youth and poor economic growth in Dominica, the United Workers Party (UWP) will be hosting a jobs and economic growth forum aimed at creating a plan for, if and when, the party assumes power.

“Over the past several years the Dominican economy has suffered from poor economic performances, rising joblessness and increased poverty,” the party said at a press conference on Tuesday. “The UWP is concerned about the high rate of unemployment amongst our nation’s youth and the subsequent social ills that could result if this situation is not urgently addressed.”

The forum, which is expected to take place on Thursday at the Fort Young Hotel, will, according to the UWP, “bring together individuals and insititutions from a broad section of the Dominican society who can formulate plans and proposals for generating jobs and helping to spur economic growth on the island.”

Member of the party and former IMF economist, Dr Thomson Fontaine, described the forum as “a critical first step” in tackling the rate of unemployment, which he said is one of the results of the shutdown of several business places on the island.  “What we hope to achieve is to bring the key players in the economy and have them sit together in one room, one day, to really focus on this issue and come up with some plans and proposals to effectively address the situation,” he said. “We are looking at generating sustainable jobs, we are looking at creating a number of jobs that the Dominican economy can grow out of.”

He explained that a plan will be generated from the forum which will be placed “at the forefront of the plans that the party has, if it assumes the role of government in the not-to-distant future.”

Party leader, Lennox Linton, said the forum cannot labeled a ‘talk shop’ because the party will be sharing its “vision of possibilities …how things can change for the better from our perspective.”

“Side by side with that we going to be listening, and we are going to learn from other stakeholders in this economy who have over the years been involved in job creation, in economic expansion,” he stated, “We will be talking with the captains of industry, we will be talking with the leaders of commerce, we will be talking with those in the hospitality sector, we will be talking with those in energy, we will be talking with those in overall entrepreneurship. The investment profiles that we need to grow this economy is going to be on display at Thursday’s conference.”

He stated that the UWP’s vision will not only be heard at the forum but other stakeholders will be given the opportunity to state their position. “We understand the power and wisdom in what resides elsewhere and we see ourselves as having a leadership role in bringing all that together for the common benefit of Dominica,” Linton stated. “This will be important in setting a road map as to how we get from here from the state of joblessness and hopelessness to a better place in our affairs in Dominica.”

Linton remarked that although the UWP is not in power, the general public can benefit from the forum by “pushing for a quick change of government so that we get in there and do the work the government has not done for 14 years.”

“Or the government can see sense in what we have done, and to the extent they intend to remain there for one or two more years, start implementing what we have put on the table because at the end of the day the people must benefit,” he said. ‘We really don’t care who sweeps the street, we care that the street is swept.”

Presenters at the forum will come from the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce, the financial, agricultural, construction and manufacturing sectors. Presentations will also be given by Linton, Fontaine, Isaac Joseph, Claudius Sanford, Joshua Francis and Isaac Baptiste.

Additionally, the UWP said, “an expert panel will be convened, comprising specialists in economics, strategic planning, investment financing, agriculture, renewable energy and other key areas.”

Commends the organizers in facilitating such an event. To be frank however, once again, this forum is based on a hypothetical situation that depends on election results. A very crafty action plan undoubtedly formulated by a very intelligent campaign manager to maximize on attainable votes from the young voter demographics in Dominica`s politics.

As a young adult, i would hope that the investment profiles discussed are not solely dependent on the UWP party winning the upcoming election. it would be very interesting and beneficial to us all if politicians looked beyond the need to captivate new voters but rather to have discussions/debates that would focus on actual proposed plans that would affect beneficial economic change within our country. this change should most importantly, be plans that would strengthen the middle class and empower those who are striving to change their impoverished lives. lets address short term and long term economic issues but never forget, you work for the people, not for votes.

    Regards,

    ‘Shiite-Ras’

What workers don’t get is that EVERYONE CANNOT BE EMPLOYED BY GOVERNMENT! The private sector has just as much responsibility. REgardless of being employed…. Initiates are in place for the youth to be entrepreneurs. Why don’t they encourage the youth to be self employed. If hatians and Spanish can come to Dominica and make enough money to live plus send money back home for there family, how is it that Dominicans cannot do it too. Stop blaming government. Some of our youngsters are to LAZY! they sit on the block next to each other facebooking and watching their lives pass by. Then they need a quick money so they do drugs. I see it in my own village, there are business opportunities to venture on, but they refuse to work hard. They want to be spoonfed!

sooo should young people engage in the “sell ur body” business like 60% (if not higher)of the spanish community… or try the farming like the haitian population where 80% of the access roads are bad. It is not possible for everyone to be employed by the government but it is the governments duty to ensure that its country succeeds. i am positive most of u commenting have been in the politics game for years. i have never voted in my life but i can clearly say u people voting just for voting sake and not for the betterment of urselves, families or countries. Older people to grow up and think of the youth. Vote for success not because u getting a $1000 for a vote and then for th next 5 years you crying hungry.

It is not possible for Government to employ everybody but Government can create the avenue for job creation. If the farmers need access roads; don’t you think its their responsibility to facilitate that. Rather than have 100% Chinese people employed on the funded projects, don’t you think at least 40% should be Dominicans?

Just like to remind Dr Fontaine that it is the IMF that cause poor countries to struggle by the demands of austerity, in order to get financial assistance. Even bigger economies such as Greece, Spain, Italy etc. struggle under IMF austerity imposition.
Please don’t try and con Dominicans into believing that if you and UWP get elected that you will automatically get IMF money to transform the economy overnight. You know the amount of misery we would have to endure before we see a penny of IMF money. You also know that the Americans don’t care about the small countries in their back yard and not as willing to give financial assistance unless they have oil and are able to by their arms to wage war. So please tell us where you and UWP will get the funding for your plans. We also know that UMP is anti-Chinese so i don’t see you going to China with cap in hand. We stand a better chance of getting more Chinese investment under a Skerrit led Labour government. Apart from Germany the European Union is broke so no chance there of getting anything from them. So pell out your funding options that the current government not already have access to. The Dominican electorate eagerly await your answers.

    Pure politicking.

    1. Where does the UWP get its unemployment data from? According to the Central Statistical office, unemployment in Dominica around 2009 was 13.9%. Is the UWP telling us that in 4 years (between 2009 and 2013), unemployment has skyrocketed by 26.1%? Not impossible, but unlikely. Bring out the facts.

    2. What is different from this forum and the governemnt’s ongoing consultations with the private sector, e.g pre-budget consultations? These consultations also include a wide cross-section of private and public eperts.

When i first heard of the idea of this forum, i thought it was a great idea. Reading the above utterances by the UWP’s team, i conclude that this is a repetition of what the government already does and therefore, it is unlikely to lead to any new information/strategies for economic growth.

Clear Harbor made 243 people redundant in September, Brizee Mart closed down, Lime released workers not to mention still have plans of sending home more people, there are other small buiness places sending home people so it is not impossible for the unemployment rate to be high. Even with those “losses” that you have listed, the figure of 26% jump in unemployment is ludicrous at best. You have not yet even begin to explain that figure.

Again, i suugest that if the UWPwee wants to be taken seriously, it should cough up the source of its data that shows current unemployment rate at 40%.

Nothing from those so called consultations ever come to materialize, because with the budget consultation for example, the exercise is conducted after the fact; After the budget has already been prepared. This government listens to no one but itself and it’s cronies

    I’m delighted – a team strong heads in action…

It’s time in D/ca to reject the idea that the function of thought is to describe, represent, or mirror reality. Instead, let those in the know and competent develop their philosophy around the idea that the function of thought is as an instrument or tool for prediction, action, and problem solving. They contend that most philosophical topics — such as the nature of knowledge, language, concepts, meaning, belief, and science — are all best viewed in terms of their practical uses and successes rather than in terms of representative accuracy.

I strongly believe folks that your hearts are in the right place, to rebalance D/ca’s economic to create jobs, wealth and prosperity for all.

Eat, drink and sleep well folks – God Bless!

“We are looking at generating sustainable jobs, we are looking at creating a number of jobs that the Dominican economy can grow out of.”

If by generating “sustainable jobs,” you mean getting involved into another cook-shop, rum-shop, or a clothier store, and similar petty, mum and pop operation; that shall not be sustainable. For that matter any kind of business in Dominica which depends on the importation and sale of commodities will not do much to change the status quo; and the reason is such business are supported by local people who does not have the money to purchase whatever these candy stores sells due to a lack of employment.

Anything one suggest that does not revolve around some sort of manufacturing industry cannot be considered sustainable employment.

Priority must be given to a series of manufacturing business, therefore marketing training have be a priority also, unless one have something to sell via export, which in turns brings in revenue into the country, there is very little that can be done to change the poor economic state in which Dominicans found themselves for almost a hundred years!

And let me take some time out to address the great commentator; this so called Ft. Lauderdale. You see, politics has its place, and talking crap about situations that you do not know what you are talking about is another thing. You claim that UWP was in government and did nothing. You are silly; the UWP held power for less than five years, just a little over four years, check it out. How much can a government accomplish in that short space of time?

However, if you look carefully, commencing with the School built in Castle Bruce, and elsewhere, Wesley and all; you will discover that the UWP was focus and in action: note this also, the UWP commenced construction on an International Airport, the Labor Party promptly shut construction down the very day they siege power.

The Labor Party has held power in Dominica longer than any other party I know , and to be honest with you they have not accomplished much considering the length of time they hold on to this power, and I am not simply referring to this labor party in power, but all who serve, under of the name Labor Party.

And I live in Los Angeles, and is very aware of every thing took place in Dominica in more than fifty years, so all your talk are simply meaningless child’s talk, you know the ( goo goo ga ga thing), that’s the way children commence talking.

As of present, Dominica GDP has surpassed that of St. Kitts and numerous Caribbean countries since the current administration has taken power. I am not saying the previous could not have fostered that growth as well, but I would be assuming and we can’t assume what has not been achieved. Growth doesn’t happen overnight. The standard of living in Dominica is definitely increasing. In a democratic society it won’t be felt by everyone, but those who work and yield these benefits which it affords them. What we need is Dominicans coming together to create jobs and new industries, where growth potential exist. The government should not be the largest job innovator, but the last. New growth comes from ordinary citizens. The government should be focus on health care, infrastructure, border security, domestic crime prevention, education and tourism promotion. However, we need to create the businesses and services that would encourage people to come our shores. The government should not be building hotels and marinas. This is a non-governmental role. The only thing the government can do is to give incentives to foster creation of those services.

Your comment is misleading, Dominica has not passed countries such as St. Kitts in GDP, and our economy is not growing. If you had listened to the 2013 Budget presentation by PM Skerritt you would have heard him announce that our growth was ‘negative 0.1%’ that is, -0.1% and that he presented this in a nice way; just so we would not realize that our economy contracted by 0.1%

If you are t be taken seriously, all of these things that you talk about should start now. You do not have to be in Government to do positive things. Start now. Stop talking and starting getting your hands soiled with positive things.

One of the reason why PM Douglass (God bless his soul) was taken seriously by his constituents was based on the fact that even when whilst in the minority and he knew that becoming Prime Minister was a far cry, he contributed positively for his constituents in many ways, both personally and as a party.

The last time the DAIC, financial, agricultural, construction, and manufacturing sectors came together was in 1979 to save Dominica from a constitutional disaster. Today, the same sectors are coming together under the capable leadership of Mr. Lennox Linton, leader of the UWP to save Dominica from an economic disaster. According to Mr. Linton, their will be no strikes, no burning of the President’s car and no constitutional koolwash brigade. The Skeritt Labor Government is questioning Mr. Linton’s educational back ground as regards to his ability to be the Prime Minister of Dominica but Skerit, in fourteen years has not had the for sight or leadership qualities to bring those sectors together in an effort to prevent the economic disaster that now faces Dominica.

Jimi Hendrix: The real Jimi is dead but his legacy lives on………and we are still singing to his music all of it, including the protest songs…The protest actions are significant to make a point and there are many different ways to make that noise and demonstrate that protest because people get the message in many different ways. Jimi sang and some got the message, Mandela protested and the world got the message….
UWP has protested on our behalf in the courts, parliament, public meetings and marches and most got the message in their own way…..So the protest is good, appropriate, especially this one. Now please protest in your simple way…go house to house, meet the poor families, the youth, etc and explain a bad economy we have and protest loudly and silently until the message is received. Good \Luck……WE NEED LABOUR OUT….THEY ARE CORRUPT

    October 29, 2013

I think this is a good effort by the UWP, and I hope it becomes quite fruitful. But they and any other government in Dominica is facing the huge task of the people of our country. We need to realize that WE need to be the change, not have it handed to us. aren’t we tired of handouts? We need people with a persistent entrepreneurial spirit, not people who are ‘just looking for a job’ and are only in it for the money ….

    October 29, 2013

Guys be it known that I strongly commend you all on this very positive and unprecedented move. As a labourite I boldly confess that this is a move in the right direction, my party has failed in the area of actual job creation and have done so miserably. When it comes to promising jobs we win that contest hands down, but what good is a promise with no fulfilment in sight?

I wish to state here and now, for what I believe wont be the final time that come next election I will be voting for change. I am so putting country before party this time and I urge all conscientious and patriotic Dominicans to do the same. One man said that it is insanity to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. We have supported the DLP all those years and instead of certain sectors of the economy to improve we see them getting worse with no end in sight. Change for me is now a priority, we must do this for our country my dear friends. I love my PM and my party but I love Dominica more and make absolutely no apologies for that.

It’s time Dominicans vote on issues rather that’s sparkling personalities who have proven to be baseless on governance issues..

UWP stands for Higher ideals, rather than the dark side who stands who gutter level attacks rather than enlightening it’s citizens…
