A two-day Procurement, Warehouse/Store Inventory Management Workshop for warehouse/storeroom personnel was launched in at the Garraway Hotel on Thursday.

It is expected to shed some light on the concepts, tools and techniques needed to effectively plan and control purchasing, warehouse/stores and inventory performance.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Manager of DOWASCO and President of the Caribbean Water and Sewerage Association (CAWASA), Bernard Ettinoffe, said that particular sector in an organization is often forgotten.

“We believe that this is important, it is integral to the effect management of water utilities in particular as we spend large sums of money on purchases on storage of these items and other things. You will be dealing with this over the next two days,” he said. “It is critical to financing and financial management of these organizations and institutions for several reasons … if you overstock you are tying up the company’s finances in assets and if you under stock you have to rush orders.”

The two-day workshop provides solutions for procurement, inventory, and maintenance warehouse/storeroom personnel and is being facilitated by CAWASA. 25 individuals will participate in the workshop including participants from Anguilla, Antigua, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent, and the Cayman Islands. CAWASA has a total number of 13 members.

Facilitator and Executive Director of IMS Business Academy Canada and Trinidad, Dennis Lord, said there has been various request from people locally about procurement, stores and warehousing.

He added that the success of the workshop will depend on the attendees’ constant participation.

“Inventory is invested money. Money is involved in the carrying of inventory, 25 percent minimum. Wherever you have it stored cost you 25 percent per annum of the average inventory that you have in your warehouse or storeroom,” he noted. “You have to ask yourself can we afford that? “

Sheree Baron, Director of operations at IMS Business Academy, is another facilitator.

On day one participants will explore Procurement, Warehouse/Stores Management in the overall supply chain, the purchasing process, classifying items, warehouse/storeroom replenishment techniques, service level and safety stock and effective business communication.

Participants will be introduced to warehouse/store management, physical aspects of stores management, warehouse/storeroom storage methods, warehouse/stores control improvements.

Storeroom measurements and negotiation training will be held on day two.
