WINAIR lands first commercial night flight in Dominica

WINAIR

Regional carrier WINAIR has made its first commercial night flight into Dominica.

Last night, the aircraft flew in from St. Maarten carrying 13 passengers and landed at the Melville Hall Airport at about 8 p.m.

Ports Minister Rayburn Blackmoore had told a ceremony to launch CARICOM Airways’ Dominica-St.Lucia route at the Canefield Airport yesterday that WINAIR would begin its night flights this week and would land at 7:10 p.m.

“I think that is very historic,” he said yesterday.

Blackmoore took the opportunity on the other hand to assure that all the technical issues have been resolved with LIAT as it relates to night landing in Dominica.

“We have addressed all the concerns of LIAT in Melville Hall, all the technical concerns LIAT has,” he said

He added, “I want to really commend you again for WINAIR, because WINAIR never had any difficulty in coming to Dominica and of course recognizing the benefit to be had in the process LIAT is now saying that they are willing to come.”

why does everthing has to take a political bashing? Why cant we have some decent, unpolitical development for the sake of the country. People, its not Skerrit, its not Ron Green, Its not James, Its not Papi. Its God and let us work together, whether opposition or ruling to develop DOMINICA.
Politics will destroy and waste resources of a country, like the portion of lands that are sitting destitute at Wesley/Marigot for an international airport, while some make merry over a few lights on an existing airstrip. And why, because the lands were purchased by the outgoing prime minister, James. Now if you ask me, I would say, “Ok, the property is already acquired, let’s use it for the same purpose, instead of acquiring some other unnecessary location.” Politics will separate, but togetherness is what is needed, whether opposition or ruling. We need to see DOMINICA, and not blue, red, green or black. We need to Support who is in, and help steer the development of DOMINICA.

I DON;’T KNOW WHY MR BLACKMORE INSIST ON LYING TO THE DOMINICAN PPL. LIATS CONCERNS HAVE NOT BEEM MET. ECCAA HAS NOT APPROVED THE NIGHT LANDING APPROACH AND AS A RESULT LIAT WILL NOT BE SCHEDULING ANY NIGHT FLIGHTS. THE CURRENT SITUATION IS THAT GUADELOUPE PROVIDES RADAR AND VECTOR APPROACH TO THE AIRLINES BUT ONCE THEY DROP TO BELLOW 3000 FEET THEY’RE ON THEIR OWN. NOW IF AN ACCIDENT IS TO HAPPEN ISSURANCE WILL NOT COVER VICTIMS RELATIVES AND WILL HAVE A NOTHER CARDINAL FIASCO ON HAND. SPEAK THE TRUTH MY BLACKMOORE

Twin otter designed to land and take off in much more challenging conditions than Dash 8. That is shorter runway lengths,…in case of barked landings….
Correct me if I am wrong…Isn’t night landing approved for down wind/from the sea?
Could the dash 8 be able to safely clear the mountain ridge if the runway is overshot?

Example the twin otter can land and take off in the portion of runway north of the cane field airport terminal

Why Dominican’s like to find fault like that. Somthing is good for D
ominica like night landing and people still put politics into it. someone got to do the job by giving dominica night landing. give credit to who ever gave Dominca night landing, Dominca is going to benifit from it, we are moving in the right direction. people lets think before writing negative things on DNO not only Domincan’s reading that news. sometimes you guys comes out stupid.

I thought we were moving forward. A fourteen seat twin otter aircraft. Is this the future of night landing in Dominica? I flew on that type of aircraft with those Pratt and Whitney ear-drum busting engines. Never again. Unless I’m sky diving.
    We celebrate anything in Dominica.

are you forgetting the charter flight operated on behalf of the labour party to bring in those dominicans leaving in the states to vote last december?? so its not just the venezuelans its the labour party to. infact they used the same charter company that chavez used when he came to dominica earlier last year. the jet is prominently featured at the melvillehall airport on the arrivals and departures display monitors

Liat has a Higher Class of avaition Rating through international agencies etc…they do operate into US Ports which have very strick measure etc….

While Winair is a Low end airline who will take less issue into safety and other aspects unlike the
Legendary LIAT has much more at stake!!..

Hats off to you LIAT your inner circle are deep thinkers…and they dont reside in the rare but true fools paradise!!

competition from who? winair? caricom airways? are you forgetting cardinal airlines, air caribes, air bvi, caribbean star, caribbean sun, helen air,e c express, carib express? those were all competition but you know what they say about gold? when thats liat. never afraid of competition thats why they other airlines keep fizzling away. their aim is not to serve per say as much as they wish to see liat go under and thats why they’l always fail.

WinAirir has smaller planes and we need them to come in and fly out of Canefield. The Govt. needs to lower its fees to make this possible and encourage the tourist trade.
WinAir is also a lot more easy going than LIAT which makes flying less of a hassle.

    • hard back
      December 14, 2010

now theres a sensible comment. i wish you’d share that with mr chastenet from st lucia. thats the real reason behind liats high fares. all the goverment taxes that are incooperated into tickets. if the governments really want to see liat drop its fare then they have to be prepared to make sacrifices also. reduce the landing fees, eliminate some of those transit fees. do you ppl know that when you buy a ticket to travel out of dominica you are paying tax for the melvillehall upgrade? st lucia did some work on vigi airport there was an aditional tax, barbados upgraded their airport addidional tax, antigua is doing theres and there is an additional tax. liat operates about 50 flights monthly into dominica and pays the government in excess of $40,000.00 per month for landing fees and dominica is maybe the cheapest in the caribbean, antigua, barbados, trinidad operates alot more flights than dominica so you get the picture? now take all that into account do you really blame liat for having high fares? liat is a business and not a charitable organisation and hence has to ensure at the end of the day it can cover all its expenses and still deliver fist class service to its customers.

This is soooo great! Leave Island Any Time – LIAT, needs some stiff competition! We’ve suffered enough baggage loss, delayed flights etc over the years! Big ups to WINAIR!

      December 14, 2010

winair delay bags when their flights are overweight or if there’s not enough time to transfer bags

      • Tryphena
        December 14, 2010

It’s just a general statement which gives the issues one has to deal with on a constant basis with LIAT. Did not say WINAIR does not have issues..This will surely ease the burdens on those travelling where they could have more choices.

now find out from winair how many times they cancel flight last minute on their passengers and liat had to come to the rescue? u ppl seem to forget when winair was operating in canefield they just pullled out leaving their passengers stranded. who assisted in getting those passengers to their destinations at no additional cost to the customers? LIAT.

Let’s be fair. It are not so much LIAT’s concerns that have to be addressed but those of the authority they operate under. Winair’s flight is operated by Briko Air Services under rules issued by the separate4 Trinidad & Tobago Civil Aviation Authority. Briko are an excellent, family owned concern out of Trinidad, not encumbered with the expensive hierarchy we find at LIAT.

u are talking a whole heap of crap. if everything was in other from september why is it in november they had an expert here to recaliberate the papis? ( for those of you who don’t know its those 8 lights 4 on each side of the runway towards the sea. why is there an escavator doing work on the side near the sea at present? why did they have to repaint the air strip? why did they have to put on addition lighting on the hillside and brighter ones at that?

liat clearly told them that the approach has to be approved by the ECCAA before they start servicing dominica at nights.
you need to ask mr black more when did all thise finalisation take place, cuz it sure wasn’t when liat last met with the government last month.if they goverment has indeed meet liats concerns then im sure liat will looking into night flights when they do furture scheduling.

liat thrives on competition. always has always will. now its up to those competitors to match the high safety standards set by liat. liat is a brand name like nike, addidas, timberlands etc. you pay for the brand cuz you know you’re getting something good in return.

all you buying clothing and shoes way more expensive that buying tickets on l iat so get real ppl.

news flash…….do you ppl know that liat putting on night flights is an additional expense to them as they have to pay custom workers over time? yes liat pays them overtime for flights after 4pm.
every month customs get in excess of $10,000.00 dollars in overtime from liat. so be fare ppl don’t just run your mouths without knowing the facts.
