The Caribbean Development Bank has engaged the Dominica Agricultural and Industrial Development (AID) Bank to coordinate a three-day workshop on “Managing for Development Results (MfDR) for Business Support Organisations in Dominica.

This workshop is taking place at the Fort Young Hotel from Tuesday 19th April, to Thursday 21st April, 2016 and is specifically targeting business development officers and project officers of business support organizations in Dominica – such as the AID Bank.

It is being organized by the AID Bank in collaboration with Caribbean Technology Consultancy Services (CTCS).

Minister for Commerce, Enterprise and Small Business Development, Roselyn Paul, who was addressing the opening ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel on Tuesday said the small and micro business sector increasingly contributes to the social and economic development of Dominica, “and has the potential to even play a greater role in the national thrust to creating and expanding employment opportunities…”

According to her the workshop is viewed as being, “timely” and “relevant”.

“Today’s workshop falls well into the scheme of things as we continue to build a supportive and enabling entrepreneurship ecosystem,” Paul noted.

She stated that the workshop is expected to build human resource capacity for increase in knowledge, understanding and utilization of result base tools for the development of businesses in Dominica.

“It is expected to outline and adopt a common approach to managing the development results that supports Dominica’s business development strategies for MSME’s and promote gender sensitive methodologies,” Paul said. “It will offer to key agents of change in the small business sector important tools for improving; monitoring and reporting on MSME have and towards designing appropriate frameworks for result oriented MSME’s.”

She encouraged participants to participate fully in the workshop.

Main facilitator of the workshop, Avril Coipel said the purpose is to ensure that, “ when you leave here you can design the type of project and plan for the type of project that will allow you to attract the type of funding that you want.”

“We are going to focus during the next three days in defining where it is that we want to go, so that our project will be more of a success and will be the type of project that the donor agencies would be proud of funding,” she stated. “What we want is for our project to stand out and that we can show that we are presenting sustainable projects that allows us to have some level of continuity into the future.”

She said tools which will be presented and practised over the three-day period will include stakeholder analysis, problem analysis, and option analysis.

“We are also going to ensure that gender is a part of your project, and when we say gender we mean how projects affect men, affect women, affects other minority groups…,” Coipel stated. “Also we are going to look at performance indicators.”

“Finally, we will do a touch on project planning and budgeting,” she added.

In 2015, the Caribbean Development Bank conducted a sub-regional workshop on “Managing for Development Results for Cooperating Institutions of the Caribbean Technological Consultancy Services (CTCS) Network”.

The workshop was attended by officials from corporate institutions that collaborate with CDB’s CTCS Network to provide Technical Assistance for development of Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises ( MSMEs) in the Bank’s Borrowing Member Countries.

Regardless of how things are, we still have to keep trying, we still must develop our people, develop our capacity and aim for improvement. Change is inevitable and I believe that one day the government and people will place emphasis on results. Thanks for the workshop.

“Managing for Development Results” ongoing in Dominica. Please be advised Miss Paul, you and us are not going to witness, experience nor see this perception of Results taking place as long as Skerrit is PM and this corrupt DLP government is in power. This government of your is not focus on results but rather on Fast Food approach to development. There has been no focus on development, planned development in Dominica for over 10 years, let alone for results. You all are training people on Results based development, but it is like training a young inexperience under age expectant mother parenting and as soon as baby is born the baby is taken away. This government and its governance has taken away our democratic rights has abused our governance. We have no meaningful , quality debates in parliament, there is no accountability in government and the Results we see everyday is poverty, begging, misery, and the increase in child abuse.
    Please come again.

Workshops, Seminars, Meetings, Discussions… That is all we are getting, but results and action are in very short supply.
