Cabinet meets “to plan the way forward” after Christmas Eve flooding

Dominica’s prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has cut short his vacation in the United States and returned home to deal with the mass flooding and destruction caused by rain on Christmas eve.

The prime minister along with some cabinet members including Roseau South MP, Ambrose George, on December 26, toured the south of the island which was badly hit by the storm.
“I have visited the persons and areas affected and I must say that it’s not a pleasant sight to have seen people in that state especially during Christmas, the government has committed itself to assisting those affected including the hotels of Ever Green and Anchorage,” Skerrit said.

He said Cabinet met twice in his absence and will meet today December 27, 2013 at 12.30pm to get “a further update of the situation and plan the way forward.”

    Am very concern, while we are consolidating after a disaster so much loose talk like babies in a cradle. Disaster will happen everywhere and its going to be worst as times goes by. Stop blaming each other and put your house in order. Its a wake up call for all. Those who are not at fault can cast the first stone.     It’s a shame though. While some of our people are worried that their beds are wet and their houses are destroyed some wicked souls are on DNO discussing the Honorable Prime Minister where about.     Prime Minister may God continue to bless you, your government and our country. Disasters happen and will continue to happen, whether you are in the country or away.

    I guess some Dominicans who do what they do best, that is complain, no matter what the situation; believe if you were there the storm would not happened. How absurd can some of us be. That is the only conclusion I can come up with. They are really making you bigger than life itself and making themselves very small and insignificant. Can you imagine when the country needs everyone to pull together because our people and country are going through a tough situation some are complaining about the PM not being on island? Please, there was an acting PM wasn’t there? And I understand once the PM learn of the disaster he tried his very best to get back to Dominica as soon as he could, but what would we want in such a weather?

    I wonder why the complainers are not thanking God for sparing our lives. It was a horrendous storm How many deaths were there in St. Lucia and St Vincent compared to Dominica due to the storm? Shouldn’t we be thankful? We should stop making others make a mockery of Dominicans. I guess if they thought they would win votes come the next election they would openly blame GOD Himself instead of the PM.

    But little do they know that is exactly what they are doing and we are listening.

    So reads the headline; this is an opportunity for the politicians to tour walk, and drive around in their quarter, and half an million dollars cars, and SUV’s; talk, make their presence known, and felt. Hopefully they will gain a few political miles at the expense of the suffering unfortunate victims.

    I am not suggesting that something should be done to help the victims of the flood, nevertheless, this might be a new experience to them, there comfort zone is in shambles, sort of ruffled at the moment; their problem is very visible right now, hence the politicians enjoys the moment to help boost their chances at the poles next election.

    While the new victims are in pain today, we seem to have forgotten that there are many who’s homes are not flooded out, nor washed away however, they are victims who have been living in similar, and worst conditions over the years; and although many of the sufferings, the very poor has appealed to the government for help, their cry for help was ignored!

    I read where Rayborn Blackmore said “the minister of community development, and social services” will assess the damages, and help and all that or something to this effect will come to the people affected right now. I need to remind the so called minister of community development, and social services Gloria Dodds (Dods) Shillingford, that within her constituency, there are residence living in similar, and worst conditions than a flooded hose, which she has ignored for years.

    It is important to note such victims of our system has appealed to the government through her the parliamentary representative who simply look at such unfortunates as stray dogs! In spite of what we read in regards “to plan the way forward” by the time the news gets stale, only the favorite party clones will receive help, and I detect the people who will be help the quickest will be those who sports the brightest color of red.

    So, to Gloria I say when you tally the party favorites in the their hour of need, perhaps you should focus on the many people of Wesley who have reached out to you seeking help and assistance from the government who you have ignored, however, assured that the young and bodily able people in their twenty, and thirties, are recipients of gifts, while the very old unfortunate who needs help are ignore.

    I just hope the monies or assistant that is going to be given for river walls and proper drainage would be put to good use. cause I know for a fact that we were assured that certain amount of monies have be allocated for a river wall in the hillsborough area in layou and up to now not one steel that have been put up. please stick to the promises especially when it concern the safety of the people

    The two cabinet meetings held during the absence of Skeritt was of no importance. In order for that DLP to operate, Skeritt must be in control. They say two cabinet meetings were held but the people of the Newtown Constituency heard nothing as regards to the way forward. Now the Sheriff is in town, in one week time, Dominicans are going to hear that all Tom, Dick and Harry are going to make pledges in order to assist Dominica. I would not be surprised that nothing significant is done until a couple of months before the next General Elections.

    Obama went on Vacation and I knew. My PM went on vacation and we didn’t know. Yeh yeh Laborats it is not your business but it is my business to know that the leader of the country is on vacation and the duration of his /her vacation.
    I can confirm to that not even the cabinet members knew that the PM was on vacation.

    You are entitled to vacation but you must let the country know when you are taking vacation.

      To me,as an official of the country such as the PM,when he leaves,whether it be vacation,or duties.He suppose to inform that he is out of island and live an “acting” PM or deputy officer to hold the post while’s he is out for a time period. This is not like you and me locals who could take a trip without tellimg anyone.He is the PM which means he plays an important role and therefore put things in place when he is out. He was voted in because the people trusted him to deliver and give proper leadership at all times.Therefore as PM ,he needs to carry that leadership function every single day. If he cant handle the role….Give someonelse it….just a thought.Hearts out to those who lost personal possesions and even lives after that christmas eve tragedy.
