CARICOM statement on comment made by US President Donald Trump

STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) ON COMMENT MADE BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply disturbed by reports about the use of derogatory and repulsive language by the President of the United States in respect of our Member State, Haiti, and other developing countries. CARICOM condemns in the strongest terms, the unenlightened views reportedly expressed.

Of additional concern, is this pattern of denigrating Haiti and its citizens in what seems to be a concerted attempt to perpetuate a negative narrative of the country. We are especially saddened that such narrative emerged around the time of the anniversary of the devastating 2010 earthquake which took so many lives of citizens in that country.

The Caribbean Community expresses its full support for the dignified statement of the Government of the Republic of Haiti in reaction to this highly offensive reference. It should be recalled that Haiti is the second democracy in the Western Hemisphere after the United States and that Haitians continue to contribute significantly in many spheres to the global community and particularly to the United States of America.

CARICOM therefore views this insult to the character of the countries named and their citizens as totally unacceptable.

Give Trump a break he made a mistake, he was only referring to Skerrit. Trump is right! Ross just left to operate in the US, its all about America first. I wish our sht- hol leaders would learn to put their people first. who cares what Caricom thinks? the US economy is doing great, the American people know they did not elect a Pastor but someone who tell it as it is. He is not a politician, he is HONEST. When Obama fought for man to marry man and woman marry woman he lighted the white house, you said nothing, he put eight million people on food stamps, you said nothing. Please go back to sleep. He is going to build the wall to keep the Mexicans out so more of your Educated people can come in legally, a word you don’t like. Seven more years!!! Make America Great Again!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not have to hear an audio of Trump saying those words to believe that he said them, after all the other things he said, and we heard audio with him saying them, that he denied after.
But I have heard so many derogatory statements made by regular people on the streets about the people of Haiti, every day. People speak very badly of them, and say they do not want them in their countries, yes I have even heard people on the streets of Dominica saying such things. Maybe now we will begin to see our brothers and sisters of Haiti in a different light. Time will tell.

Writer, I am not sure American democracy predates Haitian democracy as you claim in your article. Haiti is probably the first free country in the Western Hemisphere (you smart history people can correct me if I am wrong). But at a time when Americans were still enslaving people and killing each other in their horrific Civil War, Haiti set a great example for them to follow. So “…….. Americans,” like Donald Trump, should learn the lesson of history and give Haiti the respect they deserve.

Trump’s enemies are not few,if you listen to CNN and all the other major channels except foxes news they are inventing all kind of lies about Trump no wonder he labeled them especially CNN “fake news. But TRUMP IS ONE OF HIS OWN ENEMY” If he really made this comment it is of poor taste and should be criticized.Although he denied it,he may not used the exact words but I believe their is an element of truth.
Trump is not in the PC business he tells it as he sees it.but you should not voice all your opinions in public
We in DA would rather have people from the U.S,Canada, and Europe in the likes of John Keller,Robert Ross to come with their money and invest, creating employment, these people we would welcome, but we should not belittle others as we tend to do.I will not mention any country because you the readers know who I am referring to.

Did Caricom condemned the Clintons for selling out Caribbean and African bananas farmers for campaign contribution.

Mr. Trump’s vulgar and unsavory reference to Haiti and the African continent is indefensible. CARICOM responded appropriately. I only wish that CARICOM would castigate and sanction its own members and leaders when they step out of line. Many of the Caribbean leaders do not have the moral high ground to stand on as they treat opposition parliamentarians and their supporters with utter contempt. CARICOM leaders, with no exception, have given us divisive politics, potbellied poverty, uncontrollable crime, unsolvable indebtedness and a life time of hopelessness. That’s their legacy.

Why do you pay attention to anything that Trump or Skerrit say? They are just full of air.

  11. Nothing but the TRUTH!
    January 14, 2018

First, I STRONGLY condemn the alleged derogatory and repulsive language of President Trump. But the truth is since it was not made in public, neither myself nor CARICOM have heard an audio of such statement we should take Matt’s advise of not opening our mouth to confirm that we are fools. But after listening to CARICOM and knowing how they have dealt with situations in Dominica where they had audio recordings of public statements made by PM Skerrit, did they not behave like s…hole or a..hole leaders and gave Trump every reason to refer to us as s…hole countries? They heard Skerrit tell us to “go to hell, its not our damn business” but they were not disturbed? They heard Skerrit say “Brother Ian Pinard, colleagues, comrades, Ladies and Gentlemen. Ian Pinard has just grown 10 feet taller in my eyes,” after a minister resigned for alleged sexual misconduct with a minor. They heard when Skerrit asked supporters to call the opposition traitors. Let’s not talk about the “RIOT”…

    • Nothing but the TRUTH!
      January 14, 2018

In my opinion CARICOM should shut up because they have behaved like s…hole leaders and have given Trump and everyone reasons to believe that CRAICOM is “shithole” countries that CANNOT take care of issues in their back yard. These CARICOM countries should shut up and allow other countries to call Trump out!

I agree with your comment 100%. Even though by now everyone knows that Trump has a slight mental issue, the Caricom and Dominica would be well advised not step on Mr. feet too much. As it stands right now Trump is going to stay for at least a few more years and at one time or another within that period we might depend on America for help and I’m not only talking about money.

Trumps comments were racial and you agree with it? Trump attacked the African continent, where all black originalted, and Haiti where they revolted against slavery? The things I would tell you ehh, but it would be too inappropriate for dno to approve it.

  12. The Perfect Idiot
    January 14, 2018

I was very encouraged when other countries rebuked Mr. Trump. But when I heard CARICOM I got upset because they made me feel Trump statement was justified because no doubt CARICOM has been behaving as s…hole. Take for example the riot that occurred in Dominica after a peaceful opposition meeting, days after the arrest of Monfared, who had a Dominica passport. A week after the riot CARICOM was to meet in Guyana and one expected them to step in and deal with the matter as a responsible body. But here is Skerrit: “After meeting with the Heads of Governments myself as a group and also those who approached me on a one on one, I am more fortified now than ever that there must be a thorough investigation into the disturbances,” “I can tell you that Heads are appalled by the behavior of the leadership of the United Workers Party,” What we saw later was the arrest of opposition members as if that was the advise of CARICOM heads. Maybe that’s why Trump referred to us as …….. countries

Spot on correct. This is a Micky Mouse organisation if I’ve ever seen one. This organisation is, like Skerrit full of words but lacks in action. The things that would really matter they have not been able to agree upon for years now: freedom of movement of people, freedom of movement of goods, watching over democratic values and corruption with the organisation. For the future they would be well advised to put on their thinking hat before they open their big mouth…

The US President do not care what ever words come from his mouth because their country don’t depends on anyone for assistant, so we at caricom might have to even be careful how we respond to tht because we always need US assistants. The problem is when we always have to seal assistance from someone you have to take what u get

Like the Trump cares about Caric0m. He stated Haiti by name, but he is referring to all of us South of Florida who feel that the US is a bed of roses. The point is, we in Caric0m should endeavor to make our home, a place where the populace won’t want to run away from. Our people have to be able to make their “American” dream at home. That’s all!

It’s all well and good for CARICOM to call out Trump when he makes such derogatory comments against black people but they pay a blind eye to what the Trump of Dominica calls his fellow citizens. Did CARICOM not hear when Roosevelt Skerrit told the opposition to ” go to hell”? Did they not hear when that same Roosevelt Skerrit told citizens of Dominica to call the opposition members traitors, whether they meet them on the plane, at a funeral, at the supper market or just about anywhere? In as much as I hate what Mr. Trump said, I am even more upset that this unfair and hypocrite body called CARICOM opened their mouth and of such, I do hope president Trump replies by referring to them as the S…hole CARICOM
