The process of choosing a Dominican president to replace Eluid Williams whose term expires on Monday, September 30 has generated a storm of controversy.
The government’s first nominee, Speaker of the House, Alix Boyd-Knights, withdrew citing safety concerns, after encountering vehement opposition.
Former public officer, Jennifer Wallace-Lafond, the government’s next choice, also withdrew for “personal reasons,” according to prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.
Now, the government’s latest choice, former national security minister, Charles Savarin, who has resigned his job in order to pave the way for his nomination, is being rejected by non-supporters of the Dominica Labour Party as being too partisan.
So the question is, who would be a suitable candidate for the position of president of Dominica, one who could possibly command the support of most Dominicans?

The Personality of the President
The personality of the Head of State can be viewed from two main angles, the political arena and the public viewpoint.
In the former instance the President must be non-partisan with a special endowment to be objective in coming to a resolution on any matter. He should be able to effect consensus between political parties when no one else can. He is a symbol of national unity.
Where the general public is concerned, the President has to be a role model a person greatly esteemed with exceptional moral rectitude and high ethical standards. He also has to be a person of intellectual capacity who will know what he does not know and knows where to seek knowledge.
He must not be easily swayed by public opinion, but has the ability to listen and weigh carefully what is put before him before he acts. He must not be insensitive to the causes of the people.
He should have the capacity to be at ease at all levels of society and at the same time everybody should feel comfortable with him without violating the dignity of the office. A President has to be a people person who is sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the people. He must have the unusual ability to reprove people when they are wrong, yet understanding that he must be the person who is merciful.
He must understand the philosophies of the various societies, organizations and institutions that do so much to bring relief and show brotherly love. He must be humanitarian. He must be a public speaker with a public image that is above reproach.

He has served his country well, and, he has always shown leadership. The presidential title in Dominica is just a symbolic title. This represents our colonial past and should be done away with. There is no need for a president further more he or she is not even elected.
Since it is a symbolic position and that we never had a woman then lets give it to a Kalinago woman. Or rotate it by constituency by raffling the constituency names to pull up the next one in line to hold the presidency. Then let the constituents nominate the person.

Well I will not vote since I am an advocate who supports getting rid of the post of president in its present form. This position in our constitution is just a ceremonial one and at times used as a puppet on a string sucking our tax payers. Who ever is elected means nothing to me. That’s why again and again I will go back to the issue of building the State Palace/Malice/Diplomatic Centre over the much needed state of the art hospital, equip with modern
medical equipment and well trained and specialized doctors, in the field of neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon, another ophthalmologist, etc.,etc,. Health care should be our priority. Do you know it cost over euro 7,000 to have an air ambulance from Martinique to Dominica to fly a patient from Dominica to Barbados just for a CT Scan and a MRI to determine prognosis after one gets a stroke. Ask the Rafoul’s family how much it cost them to fly Michel to Barbados after he suffered from a stroke, Oh the Minister of Health can tell us how much it cost him to fly to Martinique after he suffered the stroke. An every day I see poor supporting the state palace. They must pray to god that they may not fall sick or suffered a stroke. Lastly when the Minister of Health got the stroke and was flown to Martinique, it was headline news in the French Countries and France, that the Health Minister fall sick and had to be flown to Martinique for treatment. What that means is the Minister responsible for our health fall sick and the facility (PHM)which falls in his port folio is not equip to treat him.
Anybody but Charles Savrin. Although I like Sir Brian Alleyne as a person and for the things he stands for, I still would not support him for President at this time. I believe we need a person that will restore the political climate of the country and bring us all together as one nation again. As good As Sir Brian is, it would make more sense to be nominated after Skerrit is voted out.

Honestly speaking . If Hon. Skerrit did not put Charles name forward would you have ever nominated him. In your opinion is Charles an impartial individual. We cannot just say o.k lets move on, it doesn’t matter. look who is politicking the one that move a man from a cabinet minister to president. we all know that once the position is to be filled via the appointment( failure of the constitution) of the prime minister or cabinet politics will be involve , the pm is only human and any party in power will put someone there who supports them. however it cannot be so blatant . come on man Juan Pablo. i mean if the man had been retired a while now or so but you telling me that the qualities for president is so lacking in a beautiful Dominica that the pm had no choice but to pull a move like that.
