Close to $5-million worth of cannabis, cocaine and cannabis resin have been destroyed by local police.

Two hundred and ninety two pounds of cannabis and six pounds of cannabis resin, valued at EC$ 292,000; 385 pounds of cocaine worth $4.726-million were set on fire at the Police barracks in Morne Bruce on Thursday.

Head of the Drug Squad, Inspector John Carbon, said the illegal substances were seized over a three-year period.

“What we are witnessing here today is the destruction of drugs, mainly cocaine and some marijuana and these have been seized over a period of three years, up to last year,” he said.

Carbon said most of the drugs were not locally produced.

“Most of the drugs have been imported into the country,” he noted, “We know that Dominica is a major transshipment point of these drugs and in so doing we find it fit to do our job by confiscating the drugs on its way out of Dominica.”

The Head of the Drug Squad pledged that the police will do all they can to “minimize the importation and use” of these drugs on the island.

“We will continue to do so,” he promised. “We are just trying to make the society a better place for all of us.”

Carbon also said there increase in drug trafficking in Dominica, “but we are stepping up to that sort of activity.”

Just legalize marijuana so you will have enough resources to curb cocaine smuggling. How can you get more than that much coke when we all know it is miniscule to what really goes thru D’a? You can not have enough resources to go after coke when you are spending so much wasted time after marijuana that other countries are legalizing, period.

Burn them all! They serve no useful purpose to the health and welfare of Dominicans. Illegal drugs are dangerous. They have increased criminal activities in every country and destroyed general health, homes and jobs.

    Congratulations :!:

This is policing at its best!

A drug bust of this magnitude is no doubt sending shock waves across the Caribbean.

The drug trade creates many problems. Minds are being damaged beyond repair, young people are dying from overdoses. Police officers, drug pushers, and their customers are being shot.

It is a major cause of crime from petty theft in our quiet neighborhoods, to international organized crime, and from street violence in big American cities, to the drug wars in Columbia and Mexico.

Legalizing the drugs is not the answer. Studies have shown the more available a substance is the more it will be used. Those who now break the existing laws are people with no respect for law and order. They will not honor the boundaries or even acknowledge the laws if drugs are legalized. Why would they pay for licenses to produce and sell? Why would they pay income tax? They have never had to recognize such laws.

    Good work :!:

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald…

CDPF regardless of the crackdown on narcotics you really not easy. Your job is tainted by this horrendous portray and you should be ashamed. Since LAST YEAR after you came with a similar portrait but with even a bigger quantum suggestions were made for the purchase of an INDUSTRIAL INCINERATOR with low VOCs and particulate emissions yet it is apparent that none cares about the health impact of the people of Kingshill, lower Morne Bruce and elsewhere.. even Roseau. and making matters worse thinking you PROTECTING YOURSELF with the use of a household dust mask!! Is it truly of no concern even to the environment. Waiting to see what will happen next.

Legalize and tax it, like jamaicans

    That’s could be better

    • The Facts
      May 14, 2015

Consider the population of J/ca in comparison to that of D/ca. The reason it is legalized in Jamaica is because of the rastas who stated it is their religious practice. Some religious practice.
I would feel sorry for D/ca and nationals should these drugs be legalized. There would be people walking around like zombies. No exception the vulnerable youths who are influenced by the traffickers. There would surely be an increase in crimes.
Therefore, do not wish for this legalization. It would be disastrous for D/ca and nationals, those who purchase it and ingest it. It would be big trouble in D/ca.
God forbid that it will never be legalized in Dominica.

    • May 14, 2015

Many people feel Jamaica is going downhill fast.

You would not want to take a page out of their book.

Drugs create problems and if a problem already exists in your nation it will be amplified by the legalization of drugs.

In the USA people in high places are saying “We are losing the war on drugs.” My wife and I spent three summers in Brooklyn, N.Y. ministering in the streets of the infamous “gangland” where the Teen Challenge ministry was birthed in the 1950’s. I preached in their churches. We did outreach for them in the
slums. We saw the end results of the drug trade in the streets and back allies. Trust me, it doesn’t get any worse.

Please fight the legalization of drugs on the beautiful nature island. This way you will at least know who the enemy is and have a chance of keeping the use of these devil substances at a minimum.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist. (Diploma in Drug Studies)

it is not a bad thing to be burning the drugs and it has not much effect on the environment. my problem is watching this picture and looking at a blazing fire right next to this building. any fire safety officer would have found an issue with it and that is not correct practice.

But think of the amusing songs we’ll get during calypso season if the police burn down their own police station during this sort of foolish drug burn.

Legalise it and treat addiction as the health problem that it is. It’s less expensive, more compassionate, takes profit away from gangsters, reduces related crime, and is better for individual freedom. The only justification for keeping them illegal is the unwholesome desire to meddle in other people’s lives.

      • derp
        May 14, 2015

too bad they aren’t forward thinking, when the time does come it will be too late, the market would already be too saturated to make a profit

      • The Facts
        May 14, 2015

You are an advocate. You do not consider it an addiction just as those who are addicted to liquor. Illegal drugs are worst than alcohol.
Some people want to make ingesting marijuana a health issue. Not everyone ingests it for health purposes. It is only an excuse for assuming it should be considered a health issue why some of you want it legalized.

      • May 15, 2015

The various drugs that are currently illegal are not even slightly the same as one another. Crack and meth may be worse than alcohol. Cannabis certainly is not. But regardless of which drugs we’re discussing, it makes much, much more sense to approach them as a public health issue rather than as a criminality issue.

How stupid to burn all of this stuff and pollute the air even more. Environmental degradation, a specialty in DA.
Everybody knows the real truth on the drug trade here and who brings it in and profits.

    • The Facts
      May 14, 2015

If you consider it polluting, it is only temporary. D/ca is in the open air with mountains, rivers and seas. Do not worry it will evaporate in thin air and will not affect anyone.

      • anonymous2
        May 17, 2015

Contamination in the air does not just vanish. It lands somewhere. The air in DA stinks these days. A formerly pristine island is now getting progressively more polluted, combined with the Chemtrailing and all of the garbage and waste burning, the air quality is becoming very poor. You think that just because it is an island out in the ocean that everything will blow away. It won’t. I doubt that you live here.

Good that this is being done, but why use a toxic tires as part of the burning and Skerrit needs to purchase an incenerator for the burning, this is too close to the barracks.

Why are we burning tyres along with the drugs. Isn’t there already enough pollution in the air?
This seems to show a distinct lack of regard for our residents. the smoke from such burning cannot be healthy to inhale and those masks are NOT sufficient to protect the officers health.

    • The Facts
      May 14, 2015
