8 detained for ‘Carnival misconduct’

Weekes

Police have detained about eight people for misconduct during carnival, police public relations officer Claude Weekes has confirmed.

The two-day street jump-up, the highest point of the carnival celebration, got going with the j’ouvert or early morning street fête with things generally “under control”, Weekes said.

The police department has said they’re taking on a zero tolerance approach during the carnival street jump-up and according to Weekes anyone who is “disorderly” will be dealt with as their actions could affect others and the smooth flow of the carnival.

As to whether those detained will be released before the end of the carnival celebration, Weekes said: “Why must the police take them away to release them, that’s not a joke.” He said police have to assess the situation which prompted the arrest of the individuals.

Weekes wants revelers to enjoy the festivity with peace in mind, saying that “it’s not a time to be at war”.

Vendors are also being summoned to play their role in averting problems during the carnival; they’ve been ordered not to sell breakable bottled beverages, but according to Weekes some appear to be uncooperative.

“Let’s cooperate. If the styrofoam or whatever glasses are finished buy a next set,” he advised.

Meantime Weekes has confirmed that Linden Lestrade, a Fanatik band member, is being treated in hospital after falling from a truck carrying music during the Monday afternoon jump-up.

“We pray to God that it won’t be anything that would physically incapacitate him,” Weekes said on radio.

My Suggestion- keep them locked up for the entire season and impose a restraining order for the next 2 years. If they just show up anywhere close to a carnival band , calpso show, kiddies carnival,, Creole festival l anthing ock them up. Special emphasis should be placed on those who come to the street festival with weapons- Lock them up for two years.

    Bring back Tiyanni .

Dominica’s Chief of Police means “business”, as the saying goes. Good work Chief! You also need the cooperation of residents and also visitors to Dominica. We are all in it together for peace in our land and the safety of everyone. As the words of the Hymn: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”
In recent years some people in Dominica have become more lawless and dangerous to the Dominican society. If caught, they need to bear the consequences of their actions which deserve the full brunt of the Dominican Law. In this case, let there be no mercy for them. They have brought it upon themselves.
Dominica needs to be restored to overall peace and safety. Some Dominicans have not been contributing to this while they expect to live in peace and be safe yet do not accord others their rightful privilege of same.
Carnival is to be enjoyed in dignity, happiness and peace, free of evil incidents. Allow others to enjoy themselves. This is what carnival is meant for; not drunken stupor and wickedness.
I always state whether people drive or are walking and also celebrating carnival, if they wish to get drunk do so at their home and stay home. There, they can fall asleep and shake off their drunkenness. In this case, they will also be safe in the confines of their home and will not be a danger to anyone, even themselves.
Drunkards who mingle with the public be it during carnival celebrations or not could be a menace to society.
Thanks to DNO and reading specifically the interesting carnival articles, I certainly wished that I were in Dominica. However, as I always say, if the Good Lord wills in 2012.
It is not too late to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe Carnival celebration at this moment, to the end of it, tonight or early morning  Have clean fun.
Hope you employed adults can also get up to go to work in the morning and the children, to go to school. I have heard a few jokes about the after effects that carnival celebration had on some people – the aftermath of it. Probably employers, principals and teachers will understand if you are tired, the result of too much feting. No doubt, everyone of them are out feting. Enjoy it all.
Catholic Christians do not forget to go to Church to receive “Ashes”. Hope you will not be too tired  We know that “Dust to dust, ashes to ashes, was not spoken of the soul.”
Tomorrow, Wednesday commences the beginning of Lent which are days of abstinence and fasting for us specifically Catholic Christians around the world. I pray that God will assist me to do just that during those days which will lead up to Easter and celebration of same. We keep in mind that good, nice people do not go (directly) to Heaven but holy people.
May you have a blessed Lent. God bless every one!

    Mr. Weekes,

Here is a suggestion to help curb Carnival related violence. I hope you can work with the government to make it happen:

Create a database of all Carnival and Festival related offenders/nuisances. Before every festival for the next three years or so, pick them up, and keep them in custody until the festival is over. Do that for carnival, Creole Festival, even Christmas if you have to. So if you behave bad in Carnival, you missing Creole Fest, Carnival, Christmas, Easter and all the others for the next three years or so. When the festival is over, like on Ash Wednesday, send them back to their daily activities. After that, I am sure they will think twice about causing trouble in another festival.

        Annony,

I read it. I think we are too easy on crime. Just like you have it written in the law that if you are found guilty of theft, you go to jail for XX number of years, you can write in the law that if you are found guilty of disturbing a festival, you shall be sent to jail for YYY number of days, but those days are to be determined based on future festivals. Bottom line is, enjoy yourself, but at the same time, let others do the same. I heard of people who had issues with others and waited for carnival to take care of it in the band. Isn’t that nonsense? Stupesssss!! Those people have no right in festivals and you should keep them away at all cost.

individual rights and freedoms …duuuhhh can you just lock up someone just because you THINK they might commit a crime , this is idiotic nonsense

        • No trouble intended
          March 9, 2011

          Anonymous,

Idiotic is not necessary. Please read carefully before using such derogatory terms to describe another person’s opinion, or what you may perceive to be that person’s opinion.

I am not suggesting that one be locked up because I think he/she may commit a crime; I am suggesting that the punishment for committing the crime should be dished out in such a way that it will prevent future crimes and possibly deter others. Again, if you commit a crime during the Carnival, your punishment should be to ban you from carnival and other festivals for a period of time. That is what we do to everyone else for most crimes anyway. If you steal, they put you in jail that you can’t steal for a while. What’s the difference?

      Great idea.

It works in the UK for the Notting Hill Carnival. The police also use it for football hooligans before matches, home and abroad.

Drunk and disorderly, eh! Defying the law enforcers and wallowing in your bad conduct?
Proud of your actions? It is nothing to be proud about.
No good example and to others. You need to be arrested.
You are an uncooperative resident and a mischievous person who does Dominica no good.
Think of tomorrow, Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. You will surely have a hangover and may not be able to stand on your two feet all day. If you are employed and do not report for work on Wednesday morning, you may be fired. Think about that. For your own good, rectify your conduct in the future, commencing on Wednesday. Be a responsible person. This includes responsible drinking.

Your mother must be very proud of you. Sadder still, is that if you have children, you’ll raise them up to be just like you.

Carnival is only for two days. Yes enjoy it, but do so responsibly. Try thinking of others when you choose to act like you do, and when you get arrested, please dont blame it on drink. Blame yourself, as no one is forcing you to drink to excess and act like a hooligan.
