An eighteen-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to stealing a number of baby teething necklaces from Pampers Plus store in Roseau maintained that she had no idea how the beads got into her bag.
Diana Benjamin, who was charged for the theft of 14 teething necklaces worth $60 each, was sentenced to pay the fine of $500 by August 31,2010 or in default six weeks prison.
She is also to pay the compensation of $720 by June 30, for the 12 beads that were not recovered or she will face another 10 weeks imprisonment.
Yesterday, before Magistrate Ossie Lewis, Benjamin repeatedly denied knowing how the beads ended up in her bag. According to the facts of the case presented by the police prosecutor, when the young woman was approached about the matter she told police, “I do not know when the container got into my bag, but when I got to the Bay Front I see a container had a bead/necklace.”
“I took it out of the container and I placed it on my son. When I arrived home. I opened the container and I saw two necklaces in it. I put them in a bag and hide it. I can bring you at my home to get it on my baby’s neck and in the bag I hide it and the others,” Benjamin told police.
She took police officers to her home where they recovered three necklaces in an empty wipes container.
According to the information revealed in the court, Benjamin has previous convictions of theft.
“What impelled you to do that?” Magistrate Lewis asked her.
“Nothing didn’t make me do nothing. I just met them in my bag,” she replied.
“So somebody just pinpointed you to cause mischief to you? You want the court to believe that? Which person could do that?” Magistrate Lewis asked the defendant.
“…But I don’t know how it reach in my bag,” she stated.
The magistrate then asked, “Why you had to put one on your son’s neck and hide the others?” She responded that by the time she had seen the necklaces in her bag the store was closed.
“Miss Benjamin, I cannot help you because you don’t want to help yourself,” Magistrate said before passing sentence.
