BlackBerry matter leads to battery and wounding charges

Leroy Charles of Newtown learned the hard way that he should not ‘mess around’ with someone else’ BlackBerry.

In the end his friend Quad James received what Police Prosecutor Claude Weekes described as “a sound fatigue” arising from the whole brouhaha.

According to court records the whole thing began when Charles borrowed a BlackBerry phone from James.

But when James went to reclaim his prized possession Charles revealed that he had sold it.

James was not amused and subsequently went to Charles’ home and stole a gold chain valued at $3,000.

Angered by this turn of events Charles, armed with a piece of wood, gathered two friends, Myron George and Keyon George, and went in search of the gold chain.

James was cornered at his home where Charles and his gang gave him a sound beating.

Using the piece of wood Charles reportedly struck James on the head which resulted in 18 stitches.

In court, Myron and Keyon George pleaded guilty to battery while Charles pleaded not guilty to battery and wounding. He received bail in the sum of $5,000 with the trial set to begin on March 18, 2013.

Explaining what transpired to the court Myron said, “We went to his (Charles) home to get the chain, spoke with him for over an hour and he kept lying, so I slapped him twice and asked him to go get the chain.”

Keyon said he gave James “two jacks” and they both confirmed that Charles was the one who struck James on the head with the piece of wood.

“Are you his father? Would you like someone to slap you?” Magistrate Candia Carrette George asked.

Both Myron and Keyon humbly responded, “no.”

They were both fined $800 to be paid by November 30 or face three months in jail.

Meanwhile James pleaded guilty to the theft of the gold chain and was fined $700 to be paid by November 30 or two months behind bars.

The BlackBerry was not even mentioned in the final proceedings.

    What a melee. Imagine how people could get themselves in trouble in a wink of an eye. Some people take matters into their hands and get into further trouble. He should have reported the incident of the Blackberry to the police. He should not have gone to the other’s home and take his gold chain. This is trespassing unto another’s property. Two wrongs do not make a right.
    The other one should not have gone to his friend’s home. He, too, trespassed unto his friend’s property. He should not have injured him. They are both in trouble with the Law.
    What of the blackberry? Why was it not mentioned in Court? The one who sold the blackberry should pay for it. He is a bold man to borrow his friend’s blackberry and sell it. The one who bought it was also wrong to purchase it. Prior to doing so he should have ascertained if the blackberry belongs to him.
    This is a strange transaction. How can they go about selling and buying a blackberry? The Provider must be notified to cancel the account on the owner’s name. The one who purchased it must register it in his name with a Provider. If this is done the original owner will be billed for usage. As I stated, this is really a melee of a case. I hope he sorted out this blackberry situation with the Provider of this service.
    Here is a lesson. It is not wise to lend your cellular, blackberry, ipod, etc. to anyone.

      If he lied to the Court, he could be charged for contempt of Court – lying to the magistrate. This is an offense.

    Do not lend no friend gold, jewelry or money. These things always causes trouble,If the guy was not a scamp, he would have given his feiend back his phone. Good for him the blose and stiches was good for him, just that the other friends should not get involved, and tell the owner of the bb to go the police. If you cannot afford anynthing, you don’t have or cannot afford, stay without. Too many people of this world are too envious, and greedy. Older generations did not have these things and they lived longer lives. “Buy Your Own’ or stay without.

    Spare a thought for our young people. Consider the following. There is a whole generation of young people coming of age (13-22/25)in Newtown who are devoid of any skills for earning a legitimate wage/salary. The most prevalent skill among that group of young people today is prostitutions as in the case of girls and buggery as in the case of boys. Serious matter. Both sexes are indulging in drugs (mostly crack cocaine)and engage in illegal activities to satisfy/pay for their cravings. A pitiful situation indeed.

    many teenagers have simply dropped out of High School and chosen to “work’ for the “big papa”. The boys mostly are in charge of the many speed boats that litter the near shore of the Newtown community and the girls serve either as couriers of the white stuff or as “wives” to the different levels of papas in the local trade.

    What is worst the parents of these young people seemingly have given up and cannot compel their child to go back to school even if the law demands that they shouild be at school. In fact they have developed an aversion to any body who would utter any concern for the state of the children. This is something that should interest the Ministry of Education and also the Ministry of social affairs.
    Pathetic, Pathetic and Pathetic indeed.

        No, I never intended to ignore the role of the court. They did wrong, then they should be made to pay. My preoccupation is with the dozens of young people who have wrecked their lives on the shores of Newtown. That is my concern.

    The saying goes trust no one. Now a days we are not honest at all. My niece took a 1000 from money someone gave her for me since 2005 and she told me she will refund the money up till now she refuse to pay back my money. So right now I trust no no no one.

    Mr. Charles had no right in selling something that was not his although I do no condone what James did he should have been compensated for his phone. He should have been ordered to return the chain to its owner.

        A man sell my phone without my permission,i cannot get it back so i took his chain without his permission. Now i have to compensate him for his chain. So, my bb and plus my battery, WHO COMPENSATING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOMETIMES I disagree with how our system handle these cases

        That’s the same question I am asking myself.. Right now the guy should now make a case for his BB..So many times your right passes for your wrong… It seems like no crime was committed when the phone was borrowed and then sold..That is so lame.. Justice will prevail one day..

      Who cares about the chain and its value? He stole the man’s phone and then SOLD it so he deserved his chain stolen. Too bad he was beaten! He should have used that chain and strangle all three of them. Blasted thieves!!!!
      I would like for him to repeat the same scenario with my belonging and see if is not a tea spoon they would use to pick up his remains. You can not be wrong and strong.

      He seems to be rich to have a gold chain worth $3000. The magistrate should have asked him how was he able to purchase it at that high price.
      I know of no one who would consider purchasing a chain for that amount. I am certain they could afford it and if they made up their mind to purchase it for that price. I would never purchase a chain for that price.
