Brawl involving Portsmouth Secondary School students

Reports reaching Dominica News Online are that several students of the Portsmouth Secondary School were involved in a suspected gang-related brawl sometime after school this afternoon.

The incident occurred on a road near the secondary school.

According to information received, students were also seen throwing stones and other objects at each, and that the incident may be gang related. It is alleged that a pair of scissors was involved.

A source told us that one person appeared to be injured, although the extent of his injury is unknown.

Several onlookers, including students, gathered to watch until the fight subsided.

Dominica News Online was unsuccessful in its attempts to reach the school for confirmation but a police source did confirm that the incident occurred.

There are no reports of arrests.

It’s such a shame on these young people……I attended this school and it wasnt that terrible…..since A James left things started dropping.see allu know how things getting with the economy…..go to school, learn a trade…….when u get suspended and no school wants to pick you up,then u will ask yourself a question…….you will become thieves, paro cats because u messed up ur lives while u were young and then u will want to blame it on the government………gangs was there before, but it ain’t taking no place else but to the jail house……

Why do we create the impression that PSS is the worst school on the island when the fact of the matter is there are only a small number of very unguided students who cannot properly express their frustrations (poverty, academic inability, mental underdevelopment, adolescent confusion, lack of positive role models, domestic abuse, parental issues, sexual identity, peer pressure, etc.) amongst an otherwise intelligent and gifted majority? What we need to is cater to the needs of those minority “troublemakers” and let them know that there is an avenue which they can take which will lead to the success that they see others around them having. If we treat them like miscreants, then that’s what they will be. We can wait a lifetime for the government to come down from its throne and treat us fairly; we can wait for teachers to use what little time they have to magically turn our “demons” into “angels”; or we can do the job ourselves – the job that we were supposed to do in the first place – and raise our children with discipline, respect and obedience. If we can only teach them to OBEY and to SATISFY, all the rest will fall in line. And have we forgotten the power of prayer?!?!?! Give the school and its students and staff and welfare to Almighty God. This, above all, will make a tremendous difference in the entire atmosphere of PSS.

    Forward on!

Some of these comments are rediculous. P.S. S is one of the best schools in Dominica. Dnt blame the school for the acts of these so called wonabe gangsters. blame the parents who raise these little monsters and expect teachers to cater to their every needs. BS!!!!!!!!!!!!. Parents these days are too slack with their kids and hence the product of there own creation. in days gone by u think u could fight in schl and just think all will be nice and dandy when u get home. ur A……. sure to get some box. It takes a community to raise a child and whne we condone things in the community they filter into the schl system. it is high time the Ministry of E ducation cater to the needs of P.S.S  If not all most of the schls in da have porper fencing and security. y cnt pss be treated the same. WTF. KEEP IT REAL MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is sad that P.S.S should be seen as a “bad” school based on what a minority of the students are doing. Let me set the record straight. P.S.S is blessed with many gifted and talented students! The school, staff and principal should not be blamed for the actions of a few of the students, who cant be controlled by their parents! Discipline, teaching, learning and respect  should start from the home! A teacher’s duty is not to be father, mother, teacher and councilor. It is already a challenge to deal with the mixed learning abilities in the classroom in the short time that is allotted for learning. The MOE should do more to provide technical subjects for students that are unable to do the academic based subjects. Additionally the community and police should work collaboratively with the school to ensure that the majority of our students get a balanced educational opportunity in a safe fun environment.
To the so called “bad boys” try to sit in the class and learn to do something other than plot to be a criminal! Your actions on Tuesday is that of a criminal and a coward. Why do you all think that you are “bad” when it takes 15 of you to beat up 1 person? You have only 4 options in this life style that you a choosing now: 1. being killed 2. getting locked up  3. becoming a vagrant and 4. losing a limb.
To the parents take hold  of your children! What is wrong with you all? Why have you allowed your children to stray so far? Stop upholding their behavior and make them see who is boss. As the good saying goes ” spear the rod spoil the child”.
To the staff and principal of the P.S.S  unit and work together to effectively lead the majority of the great students at P.S.S.

This is so ridiculous. Portsmouth is a small community. Everybody knows who these little boys are who are playing gangsta. We know where they live, we know their mothers and their fathers. If  this kind of nonsense is continuing it is because the powers-that-be want it to continue due to their relaxed attitude towards it.
A bunch of stupid little boys throwing stones at each other having the media cover it makes them feel that they are really bonafide    gangsters.  Media coverage has made it worse.

It’s sickening to see some of the comments made by some of these gang members and their foolish supporters. Leaves one to wonder where are the parents of these boys. make you want to ask ‘where have all the young boys gone.’
when you look at it these are the ones who go to school and leave not having learnt anything.

But again, you must ask what is the Government doing about PSS, one of the major Govt. Secondary schools on the island. PSS seems to be a guinea pig school.

The school had a good principal in the person of Ms. leandra Laidlow. But they took her out because some people could not do what they want with her.
Now, they can do what they want and the school has gone way back down to where it used to be if not worst, and it’s the community that pays.

If we want to see change and discipline come back, we should all make a case to bring Miss Laidlow back to PSS!

@ Parent .. I support you 100%. I believe that we need this lady MS. LEANDRA LAIDLOW back at P.S.S. She’s the best disciplinarian that has ever passed at that school in this era.. The ministry needs to take an urgent step into that matter. As she could be removed at the end of the term and a new one placed there so a change can be made at the end of this term tooo… I rally around you 100%. I remember my days at PSS..this … was not happening…GANGS..WTF!!! Not in the days of Mr James that … would happen…they would come to school the next day to face the consequences of their actions…this new principal in Pss need to step up her game and stop picking one set of students…Get the cops involved…Possie police needs to stop drinking rum and start policing the community…this is getting out of hand and it needs to STOP!!!! If the police don’t want to do nothing then the community need to take charge…what has happened to “it takes a village to raise a child”..if any of my mother friends ever saw me fighting or in drama..the kind of beating i would get from them..i would watch over my shoulder every time…The adults in the community needs to start back disciplining kids even if its not your…they are our future…we need to show them the right way and show them we mean Business… Take back Control Possie…Its Time we Take back Control!!!!!!

These young men in Dominica needs to get off that gangsta nonsense and come up with ideas that will help them, their families, their community and their country. I lost three friends this year alone due to gang violence and it is not easy. And those who coming to DNO praising this nonsense, like @mouth of the south said is only one in the that will happen to you, you die! go jail! or become a crack head!

I’m shocked by some of the comments made.

Gang warfare is NOT a pretty thing. I lived in the UK and the weekly news broadcast about some young person being stabbed or shot due to gang warfare (be it turf or drug related) was/is very sad.

We do not want the schools/streets of Dominica to be no go areas, where the law abiding youth feel threatened. People should be repremanding those involved.

We should remember that the youth of today are tomorrows adults, and we should be advising them that it takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight and that it is better to be a live coward than a dead hero. So what if you feel that someone has dissed you and your friends are laughing.
