Sarah Lynn Augustine has been charged with the murder of her two children, five-year-old Rachael Vigilant and two-month-old Sophia Vigilant, at their Mahaut home in the wee hours of Sept. 16, 2010. She was scheduled to appear in court sometime today.
The children were allegedly killed with a knife.
Since the killings, Augustine has been receiving psychiatric treatment at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
She was seen at her children’s burial in Delices in the company of a psychiatrist, police officers, and hospital staff.
unless you have been through posprtem depression please dont accuse this lady falsely. it is real and if you don’t get help it can turn out just that way. i am sorry for her if that is what really happen and society in the caribbean needs to be educated about depression.

Oh my god!! what a catastrophy and it’s very very sad of our young people today that they are the ones that a being involved in all those crimes and violence. I personnally belive that we put the world first then god so that’s why all these evel things have to come between some of us. @Genuinely sad: It’s not about “existence of a mental illness like postpartum psychosis”………..The woman had a gwo-pwel and that’s what she CHOSE to do as HER reaction to the gwo-pwel.
Most others who get gwo-pwel deal with it in other ways; such as abandoning the kids with the father who has another woman (that caused the gwo-pwel in the first place) or kidnapping/leaving with the kids without notifying anyone etc. In both cases kids are ok in the end.
So what you propose to do, send her to a mental institution so they can inject her with mad people medicine when is a gwo-pwel she has and must take responsibility for her reaction – so I tax payer must be punished and pay for what she f**ing did to the kids under a gwo-pwel?

When I read the breadth and depth of ignorance about the existence of a mental illness like postpartum psychosis, I can so easily see how society fails mothers who fall prey to this illness. May tragedies like this fuel our need to be better educated about an illness like postpartum psychosis and free us from the need to judge others.

When I look at issues such as this, it breaks my heart but I do agree that Sarah should an will get the maximum sentence with respects to her crime. Prior to her arrival in Dominica, she started acting up in Toronto with her crazy behavior,fighting and almost distroying her family there. She knew very well what she was doing. Depression is a common issue many of us face but to know that she could look at both her kids and do something like that, I ask what would she have done to someone else. Her family will be feeling the pain now or loss but they must realize that Sarah is sick but very aware of her actions.
Dominicans need to be educated about metal illness so that when things like that happen the will not just BRAG THEIR BIG MOUTH.

Eternal Spirit, Christ in Him, man now has the privilege to stand in God’s presence, with the abundance of Eternal Life. But he must accept the forgiveness of God by faith, and through the suffering and death of His Son, Jesus Christ.
But as you said, in our state of mortality, with a carnal mind, most of us cannot comprehend these things. Unfortunately we do not realize that we are in no better position than the others who ignorantly demonstrate the wickedness of their mind against anyone in their surroundings. We are all calling for the death sentence, the long term imprisonment, and this and that; but in the meantime we are forgetting to look within ourselves, that we might pray to God for His sanctification to our heart. However that is the main resolution we need in order to live in harmony as people.
Again Jesus said “I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.” John 12: 47 If people would listen to these messages and to ask God to teach them how to understand them, they would know that God does not want to destroy anyone, regardless of how dreadful their sin.

I am a mother my self of 3 and a Dominican Woman. I will not judge this woman because I know she loved her kids. It is one of the most satisfying and accomplish feeling when you are a mother. Your whole world changes because it’s all about the children now. It is also a very trying period because we all know, life is not the same as it was before. A woman has to be so strong, blocking out all negative and all bad influences that prevents her from being the mother God intended her to be. Not every woman will be perfect at this especially if you’re not financially independant. Criticism from society and judgement from others can take a toll on a woman if she’s not striong and does not know how to put god first. So, I’ll keep praying for Sarah and all other mothers with young children. May you keep your head up and be proud of yourself and your kids. Keep praying and ignore all those negative vibes out there. Do not be afraid to ask for help from a trusteed person. Your pastor or your parents if they are willing to help. Please empower yourselves woman and plan your kids. You need to remain whole to be the best parent you can be. People out there, please look out for our young mothers and talk to them. The pictures that Sarah placed on her facebook certainly shows she had a cry for help and everyone took it lightly and just commented on it for fun not realising that it was something very serious..even her profile on youtube says she was a crazy head.

Two full nights and one full day: All those hours that Elaine Campione spent in the solitary company of her two dead daughters.
At the heart of Campione’s trial on two counts of first-degree murder — and, through her lawyer, the 35-year-old is not contesting that she drowned the children in the tub — is the unfathomable breadth of time passed in macabre vigil with the little corpses.
Time enough to dress the children — Tinker Bell pyjamas for 19-month-old Sophia, a pretty violet nightgown for 3-year-old Serena — and arrange the girls in a poignant tableau on her own big bed, dry and comb their silky hair, adorn them with necklaces of gold, force their cold fingers together in a sibling clasp, assemble separate piles of clothing and toys for their burial, even place a fan nearby to dispel the odour of decomposition.
As court has heard, other residents of the apartment building spotted Campione between Oct. 2 and Oct. 4, 2006, taking items out to the garbage bin. But nobody actually spoke to the stay-at-home mom during that period except for Tammy McIntosh, a counsellor with the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Simcoe County.
There is some confusion about when McIntosh heard the message that Campione had left at her office. She thinks it was the morning of Monday, Oct. 2, though phone contact wasn’t made until mid-afternoon. Yet McIntosh told the court she spoke with Campione “the day before” learning from news reports that the children had been killed. Police didn’t make that discovery until 6.30 a.m. on the Wednesday, indicating McIntosh’s conversation with Campione must have occurred on the Tuesday afternoon — at which point Serena and Sophia were dead.
“She sounded very tired, like she’d just woken up,’’ McIntosh told Crown attorney Jennifer Armenise on Tuesday.
“I asked her where the girls were. She told me they were sleeping.”
The thrust of the conversation, however, was Campione’s worry over her medical records being disclosed for a family court appearance later in the week, where her estranged husband, Leonardo Campione, would be seeking custody of their daughters. Four months earlier, Elaine Campione had been hospitalized for depression following a suicide attempt.
“She was concerned about some news that she’d got,” McIntosh testified. “She had spoken to her lawyer and she said it didn’t look good because her hospital records would be pulled.”
While Campione sounded as if she’d taken “a relaxant,” McIntosh continued, some of her statements also ended “with a giggle.”
“Maybe it was a nervous giggle.’’
The witness had no notes to consult about the conversation because it was the then-practice of the centre to “limit what we put down’’ on paper, a policy that has been changed since.
What McIntosh describes of that telephone exchange, in retrospect, is morbid — Campione fixating on what the hospital records might reveal, the impact this would have on her attempts to retain sole custody of the children, when those girls were in fact already “gone to heaven,” as she states repeatedly on the videotaped soliloquy recorded after drowning the children — a triumphant declaration (“How does it feel?’’) directed at Leonardo.
The prosecution asserts that Campione murdered the children to deny her husband custody. The defence has countered that Campione was insane when she killed the girls and should not be held criminally responsible.
Earlier on that Monday, though, Campione seemed cogent and rational when another neighbour, Caitlyn Wilson, drove her to Orillia to see her lawyer. It was their second trip in a week to the lawyer’s office.
On the earlier trip, Campione — meeting Wilson for the first time — was candid about her marital problems. “She said she didn’t have a good marriage and that they were going through a custody battle,’’ Wilson told court Tuesday. “She wanted to keep the children for herself. She said her husband had assaulted her and her daughter.”
Several witnesses have characterized Campione as introverted, someone who seldom spoke. Yet Wilson testified that Campione did nearly all the talking during their drives. Campione told Wilson she believed she was being followed and expressed fears about her husband’s family, claiming they were involved with the Mafia.
In the second drive back from Orillia, Campione was particularly distressed over an impending affidavit that she would be required to sign, and the release of her medical records. “I felt she wasn’t sure that this lawyer could do anything to help her — yet another lawyer who couldn’t do anything to help her.’’
Campione, said Wilson, was deeply upset over allegations that she kept a messy household and the children were often improperly attired — issues that she also addresses later, and forcefully rejects, on the videotape.
“She wanted desperately to disprove what they were saying,” Wilson told court, adding that Campione had asked to borrow a camera to document the tidiness of her apartment.
That flat was indeed spotless when Barrie Police Sgt. Thomas Sinclair arrived early Wednesday morning — the first responder on the scene after Campione called police to report that her children were dead.
The building superintendent had let Sinclair into the lobby just as the officer was considering smashing the locked glass door to gain entry, since no one was answering his buzzing. Four other constables joined Sinclair as the super led them to Apt. #408, opening the door with his master key.
“I pulled the lever, flung the door open and yelled POLICE!’’ Sinclair told court Tuesday.
The door began to swing closed again and was then pulled open by a woman. “Do you have any kids?’’ he asked.
The woman answered: “Yes, they’re dead in my bedroom.’’ Then she waved toward a bedroom down the hall.
Asked if he saw that woman now, Sinclair gestured toward the defendant. “Yes. It’s the accused here before the court.’’
Sinclair recounted for the jury what he found in the bedroom.
“I located two children, lying on their backs on pillows, underneath covers or blankets. Their faces and complexions were grey, ashen, but there was a small slit in the eyes.
“They were cold. There was lividity present. They had rigor mortis.”
He stepped out to consult with other officers and to tell just-arriving ambulance attendants that they need not come in the unit. “There was no hope.”
When Sinclair returned to the girls, someone had pulled down the covers.
“They were holding hands in what I’d describe as a pose.”
He arrested Campione, placing her in handcuffs.
At 6.47 a.m., with Campione taken to hospital, Sinclair departed the apartment.
The little sisters — “sleeping,’’ their mother had said — were left behind for other hands to gather up, deathbed to cold slab.

It is just so difficult to believe that God’s nature of Love, in Sarah’s heart and mind, would not protect her will power from that evil temptation of Satan, regardless of post natal depression, or not. Sarah committed those murders; we do not know why; but she has a testimony. We need to hear what it is. She has to stand trial.

The other person who could speak through that young woman is Satan, himself. If at all Sarah destroyed her own children, because of wilful disobedience to God, lack of Love, and selfish desire for the pleasures of the world, Satan will speak his conducts and attitude through her. The jury will find Sarah guilty of murder, even in the first degree.
The question is? Do we have people with the kind of wisdom and understand, who are able to listen to Sarah’s testimony to discern the nature of her words, and to decide who spoke through her? I am not going to go blazes for i am a true Dominican and i love my people but see what kind of people we are, i keep saying why do some of us seek to adress topics we have no clue or basis to comment. yes there is PND but when you went through it your family did not notice your boyfriend/husband did not notice? How did you get treatment. I’ve know of 2 persons who had PND and their family notice and took action. One boyfriend saw the changed and called her mother who took she and the baby in and the girl hated the baby, she was kept AWAY from the baby and then people start noticing she acting ‘funny’ and every one would say mamsel crazy and the mother had to take her to the hospital. The other one was worse she was real crazy but in both cases their family notice. IF Sarah was suffering from PND where was the boyfriend, her mother, the babysitter…… if she really had PND then they are all guilty for the death of the children

there is a difference between post partum depression and post partum psychosis.Psychosis is obviously much much serious. As far as i heard she had been asking for help because she had been experiencing weird things for a while. I even heard she went to a doctor, was given two pills and sent home. She was even asking for her children in the days after. People in Dominica need to take mental health seriously. I’m not saying she should get a free pass but i find it hard to imagine anybody willingly taking a knife and killing children you bore.

We shouldn’t be too quick to jump to conclusions here. Her being charged with murder does not mean that a determination as to her state of mind at the time of the killing has been made. At the court, her defence team may plead not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. The court will after listening to various testimonies from expert witness(s) among others, come up with a verdict. So let the legal process take its course. It must be assumed that something went wrong when something like this happens, although not necessarily.

in order to be charged with murder, the court has declared that the woman is fit to stand trial and her sanity has been restored. How could they have concluded that in such a short space of time? In fact they knew all along that she was sane, if she was insane why would you take her to the funeral? what are you trying to prove? you dont play with someone’s sanity like that, “if thats the case”. This woman has intentionally killed her children, without remorse, violently murdered her childredn. It is possible that the police have enough evidence and a formal statement from the defendant to be charged with the murder. If it is proven that she was insane when she committed sucha heinous crime, then i hope she gets a just punishment for her crime. I just pray that if she is mentally unstable, then her actions are judged by that standard, not by the standard of a reasonable man. So long then. If that girl get bail I honestly believe they will post her back to Canada. They shouldn’t even bring her cemetry. Me self nobody fooling me nowadays, I mean anything can happen people can go off for true, but it have too many ideas on TV now how to kill and get away with it. When people depress they will do anything to kill themselves, how come she not dead too?? I heard she “tried’ to kill herself (but she didn’t “try” to kill her children). She just need to go to prison until God ready for her.
