Normalcy has returned to Government Headquarters after members of staff were evacuated, while roads leading to the building were cordoned off, on Tuesday morning, following the discovery of a suspicious device.

The device turned out to be sand and stones which were wired up in cardboard and was deemed harmless based on initial investigations.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Davidson Valerie, stated that at about 8:15 , the CID received a report of a suspicious package that was found in the area of the north-eastern gate of the ministerial building.

Police then responded, and the suspicious device was found and identified, he said.

“Police officers and the Fire Department Officers who were trained in this department were summoned to the scene and the device was removed and brought to a safe location, where it was opened up and it was searched,” Valerie divulged.

He revealed that “it was found out that the content of the device is sand, some stones, which was wired up in cardboard.”

Subsequently, the device and its contents were removed, and the area was searched by the Police.

The items, he noted, are being closely scrutinized, and are being investigated to determine further information related to the content.

He commented that from initial investigations, the device is seemingly harmless.

Valerie urged the public to refrain from panicking, as the police believe the area to be safe.

The police are in the process of ensuring that the evacuated persons can return to their respective offices.

Investigations are ongoing.

They do look comical but a little research and commonsense would point out that they’re responding to a chemical bomb threat, but based on the description of the content it seems otherwise so I don’t get the point of the attire.seeing that the firemen are dressed the way they were why is it the civilians see it fit to play “gardé sa veh”

    May 17, 2016

What a seemingly clever way to distract the population by creating that bogus scenario.

Just check the items found, sand, some stones, tied up in a cardboard. The package was deemed harmless, upon investigation.

The desired effect, to have people in panic, to create a media frenzy about some disgruntled people setting trouble or inciting violence and unrest, crumbled.

The issues, real burning issues remain. Those of TOP CLASS corrupt practices, money-laundering, passport sales gone berserk, links, friends with people of questionable repute, here and abroad.

Secret, secret deals continue to unravel in the media in the regional and international arena. Dominicans were told about many such crooked deals Years ago, up to today. The patriots must be commended for exposing those evil-doers.

Dominica is suffering, while a few making millions and secretly hiding all that away in foreign bank. Since Erika, passport sellers alone making millions.

    Next time…

Yup that real smart… strap oxygen to your back while you investigate a possible bomb. those suits are to protect against smoke inhalation, its useless for what they are attempting to use it for. you bettor off just wearing your funeral clothes to save people the trouble.

Since it was outside, They could have simply used a fire hose which would provide safe cover and open up the device forcefully. But no, show off want to bring oxygen to a fire :)

What a disgrace, nasty gutter, rundown building, bad road, mold take over the paint, bad sidewalk broken windows even the palm tree fighting to survive. Them poeple all over the place traing for what they know , they out there selling dominica and dominica passport to terrorist, they doing their mock exercise, and they out there saying bomb and suspicious package, what a coincidence, in 2014 Melville hall airport, now Government building, some fools will believe that game but not fools will believe, hope skerrit knos who put the suspicious package there to distract some Dominican of all his corruption, including the Panama Papers, he supporting a child molester etc, ho told us in 2014 he know who put the airport fire, so I am waiting to hear from him as to what he knows, pure political distraction, to get off Ian Pinard back and his other half Denis Charles, this is Tony and Skerrit game, the same Tony and Skerrit who accused Linton of leaking documents when they were the ones

Duct tape is used everywhere but emergency personnel. It seals leaks in oxygen suits. That’s why it’s used all over the world, unless you wearing a space suit or working in a nuclear lab, duct tape is the best sealant.

It is amazing how shallow Dominicans think. The law took all the necessary steps to find out about this object and all Dominicans can do is seat aside call their law enforcement jokes. Now that is sad. What if this object happen to be deadly? Some explosive device or some chemical device and several people were dead and the law did nothing to prevent such? I assume Dominicans would still blame the law for doing nothing. right? Great job guys for going the extra mile to protect your citizens.

We must laugh, there is no need to cry ,because if the gov’t cannot give it’s citizen adequate clothing ,this shows us how much they don’t care…if they put on oxygen mask this indicates that they know very well it is a poisonous gas .What if this was a bomb ,do you think that these garden boots ,oxygen masks and plastic working jumpsuit would protect them? I looks like the blind are leading the blind .

@ Shaka Zulu: Good observation. They keep on surprising us with equipment, supplies, and arsenal we never knew they could afford on that little budget. Take for example, the riot police and their gear in that Salisbury incident. They came ready save for the expired tear gas cannisters. However, this scare seems nothing more than a distraction tactic, even though an appropriate EOD suit was not worn. Now that we know we have a “Bomb Disposal Unit”, we’ll all sleep better at night – yea right.

Could not help notice that the guys are in level A PPE. Tyvek suit with SCBA. Correct when responding to unknown material that may be potentially hazardous through ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption. However, they both would be dead if it was an explosive material and the guy who lifted his leg has a hole in the crutch so the entire suit is practically useless. I hope you guys set up a hot zone and clean zone for decontamination. I realise it was nothing but hope you can use my observations for training for next time.

Shaka is no bomb expert and would not pretend to be but shaka knows enough about emergency response to see lapse and if it were the real deal a few people could be dead. Hopefully someone reads and pay attention and review there procedures.

  37. All Fool's Day LIE
    May 17, 2016

Before the 2014, elections a building at the airport was on fire and PM Skerrit did not waste time to tell the nation that he knew who did it, though 2 years later we have not seen an investigation or no one brought before the court.

On Christmas morning of 2010, the house of GON Emmanuel was set on fire when both the elderly Mr and Mrs were in their house sleeping and the then national security and Tony were on Kairie calling names of the people that did that. To date, no serious investigation or arrest has been made. I am not referring to the pappy show that was done before the courts.

The PM classified information was leaked and Tony and co were once again on kairi accusing Linton as the culprit. This time his house was thrown upside down as they investigated, only to find out it pointed to Tony, and case died.

My point is, now that a suspicious package was found where government offices are and that happened so close to them, how come they don’t no who did what?

As we await the full report on this news item, I must express a concern that is plaguing my mind. During the last General Election there was, conveniently I must say for the blessed Dominica Labour Party, an alleged fire in the equipment building of the Country’s main Airport. Now, as a by-election is on the horizon, all of a sudden there is a “suspicious item” found under the Nation’s Government Ministry Building? Is this simply a coincidence or something strategical and far more sinister? Are we to shift our focus from the Panama Papers, Child Abuse and illegal tendering scandals to the possibility of internal terrorist within our midst? I tell you, politics can surely be a dirty game!
