A Canefield man, remanded for theft, told Magistrate Ossie Lewis that he was not guilty of the crime since he had actually borrowed the items from the complainant.
Mervin Christopher allegedly stole $489 worth of text books, a bottle of cream valued at $6.95 and a pair of scissors valued at $7 from complainant Elizabeth Joseph of Canefield. The alleged incident occurred between December 29-30 at Bena Ravine.
“I took it. I lend it. My neighbor, I went to her home; she wasn’t there. I saw the books, I lend it. When she came she asked me if I have it. I tell her yes. The next day I return it to her,” the defendant said when he appeared before the magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
The trial of this matter was set to begin yesterday but was adjourned until April 9, 2010 due to the absence of the complainant.
