Caribbean leaders to meet on cybercrime and eGovernance

cybercrimeAn upcoming meeting of Caribbean Commonwealth officials with responsibility for ICT will bring the region’s eGovernance and cybercrime issues squarely into focus.

The Caribbean Stakeholders’ Meeting on the Importance of ICTs and their Impact on Regional Development will take place in Port of Spain from May 26th to 28th.

Conference delegates are expected to discuss the impact of cybercrime on social and economic development, with a view to identifying next steps in implementing e-Governance and infrastructure initiatives in identified countries. Cybercrime is a global multibillion dollar industry with untold impact on Caribbean economies.

The conference will also identify and address the major infrastructure components required to deliver government services online. By investing in electronic governance, governments across the world are saving money, delivering more effective services, and competing more effectively in the global economy. Infrastructure is a critical component to successfully implementing e-governance strategies.

“An efficient, effective and secure public service is essential for economic investment and development as well as for deepening citizens’ participation in policy and service delivery,” a release from the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) quoted Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General Deodat Marahaj.

The meeting is being convened by the Commonwealth Secretariat, in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Technology of Trinidad and Tobago, Organisation of American States (OAS), International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Microsoft and the CTU.

The ITU, OAS, CTU and Microsoft are active partners in the Commonwealth Cybercrime Initiative (CCI), an international program started in 2011 to support member states in the implementation of robust cyber security programs. The 53 member countries of the Commonwealth share similar legal systems and institutional structures, and have a long history of active collaboration on issues and concerns related to Cybercrime and the Internet.

“The Commonwealth is uniquely positioned to bring together the major regional players in ICT for development. This meeting presents a significant opportunity for collaboration by a range of stakeholders on issues that have a direct impact on citizens’ lives,” Maharaj said.

Microsoft and Outlook which replaced Hotmail? I view Microsoft as a wash-out. McAfee who sold its security enterprise to Microsoft last year accused Microsoft of operating inefficiently.
Microsoft has washed its hands off XP Windows users. It now wants computer users to purchase a more expensive one. Trying to make more money? So much for Microsoft. I have lost confidence in you.
We recently had HeartBleed, now BladeShade (whatever). I heard through the Media that the latter is the worst one so far. Approximately 19 countries and approximately one million computers worldwide are affected. More arrests are expected. I hope soon.
A 19-year old residing in Ontario was responsible for devising HeartBleed. He was arrested. I hope he was kept in prison. This young man was able to hack into Canada Revenue Aency’s files and compromised approximately 900 records of Canadians.
I am eager to hear the names of those countries and how many were arrested with more to come. The U.S. with FBI’s cooperation is working hard on finding those hackers and bringing them to justice. They will find as much as they are able to catch and those who devised and sold those gadgets to illegally infiltrate those computers. I heard the selling price is $40.00. They will all pay for it in time.
I read, everyday new malwares surface. I do not wish to be negative. If these corporations with their sophisticated security systems are not able to deter hackers, will the Caribbean be able to do so? Will they win the fight?
Therefore hackers, whoever and wherever you are, one day you will be caught. If you think you are having fun and are being wicked, it will not last. You will not be able to hide for long and forever.
I spoke to my technician who will be checking my computer system soon and to give it a clean-sweep, making it look like a new one, to eliminate any unwanted spywares and illegal users, if any.
I am no fool. I know something about computers and I am one who notices if there is a problem. Get lost hackers, crooks! We hear and also read the news. You will never win. In the end you will be the loser, losing everything. Nothing is gained by harming others. You are hurting yourself. If you are spying and making it difficult for DNO’s users to type by also manipulating their keyboard, I will not hesitate to telephone the police, CIS – Canada and U.S, FBI on you. Your end will not be a pleasant one. Would love to tell you more. Maybe I should go on YouTube to state it in no uncertain way and more.

excuse me, e-governance is a strategy and technology successfully implemented by many governments across the globe…look on European countries many services available online for many years…the Commonwealth countries are looser which spotted effective technology with delay of 10 years…I guess microsoft will build for you the same ugly and unpredictable system as windows 8…plus dont forget by no account your data will be safe with a way how business conducted in the Caribbean
