Cheese thief gets lucky break

A man who stole a piece of cheese from business place Save-A-Lot has escaped with a small fine and a warning.

Fifty-four year old Trevor Prentice of Riverbank was told by Magistrate Ossie Lewis  that the magistrate would be lenient because it was Prentice’s first offence.

Prentice pleaded guilty, after being charged for theft of the cheese valued at EC$5.15.

He claimed that he had put the item in his pocket and forgotten it when he went to the cashier.

However, the prosecution dismissed his story, pointing out that the accused had taken the cheese from a chiller in the store and put it in his pocket.

Prentice was then approached by the security guard of the store who had seen him take the item.

He was searched and the stolen cheese  recovered from his pocket.

He has been given until June 15 to pay the fine or face two weeks in prison.

What do you mean? You are asking $15.00 for a piece of cheese or was he charged $15.00 for a piece of cheese. Please explain.

IF I WERE THE MANAGER OF SAVE A LOT I WOULD NOT HAVE BROUGHT THE MAN TO COURT. INSTEAD I WOULD HAVE TRIED TO ASSIST TREVOR BECAUSE THE MAN MUST HAVE BEEN BROKE AND HUNGRY TO STEAL A PIECE OF CHEESE.

Exactly. Why not let him work off his “crime”, maybe help with the clean up for the day or something, and in return get a few food/grocery items to help himself out.

        April 16, 2012

        @ Kali

You made a good point. He should have taken it away from him, reprimanded him and warned him that should he be caught stealing again, he will be charged. The owner/manager had the right to also prohibit him from returning to the store. Sometimes they need a break especially if it is the first time and for such a small amount. He would have learned a lesson. It was only $5 and some cents. Really, it was not worth taking him to Court. Anyway it was done and he was not charged much. I hope he will not try this again in any store.

Isn’it make encumbrance and waste time of Court to make noise for a part of cheese ? The owner of the shop could give it to the thief if he had thruely noting else to eat, after a good explaination of the bad maneers he had ! And during that time criminals are walking in the streets waiting Court have time to watch ont their case !

Cheese on bread! He is lucky. Many years ago, similar to what the man stated, I walked out of a supermarket with cheese I had placed in my shirt pocket and forgot. The only difference is that I re-entered the supermarket and paid for the cheese, and was given a motherly caution by the manageress.

I beg for somebody to disagree with me. Dominica have too many idle people. Where do these people come from when there is an accident. Like you said there is work to be done. A dollar is a dollar. From Stock Farm to Marigot to Grandbay, anyone can plant some tomato, raise a sheep or a goat, even if you have to ask some one to do so on their land. It can be done. We take all kind of work when we move to other people country. Why can’t we do the same in our country.

That security guard is working, he catching all them thieves. D/ca has thieves! These people need work. No work, no income coming in. Work needs to be recreated for these people. They also need to learn a trade and use their skills. I hope their skills is not stealing.

There should not be a lucky break for stealing. A thief is a thief, this is not a child. We train our children do not steal or touch anybody things.

      @ good for d goose

Too bad they do not have sale on cheese and other items occasionally. $5.15 for a piece of cheese? What size is it?
Regular cheese in Toronto usually costs approximately over $6.99 to $8.99. This type is occasionally on sale for $4.99. It is a long, square piece; quite reasonable.
It also depends on the type of cheese. A better quality (or it depends on the name) will be more expensive and cost as much as $14.99 for a small piece, if not more.
He did get off practically free. I hope he does not try this again. Only in DA will he get off free. If he was in a bigger country he would not be so lucky even for $5.15.
