Cylinder thief sentenced to pay fine

Benedict Langford of Stockfarm has been sentenced for the theft of an empty LPG cylinder and $50.

Langford, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste on Thursday, pleaded guilty to the theft of the cylinder and cash from a man in Roseau on July 12, 2010.

The complainant, according to the facts of the case presented by the police prosecutor, had given Langford the empty cylinder and $50 to purchase cooking gas  for him.

However, Langford never returned with the cooking gas. On the following day, the complainant made a police report and an officer was assigned to investigate.

On Monday 19, July, 2010, at about 2 p.m. the officer met the defendant and attempted to question him on the matter. “Officer I busy,” Langford said, and began running. He was later apprehended and taken to police headquarters in Roseau.

While there he admitted, “Officer I smoke the money. I put the cylinder in a house in Goodwill.”  The cylinder was recovered at the house two days later.

In mitigation Langford said, “I tell the owner for the cylinder I sorry for that and I can give it back…I working up by infirmary collecting rubbish so I can pay him… He tell me he doe want no case…”

“Plenty times he give me cylinder to buy for him and that never happen. I doe know what happen…. As is in the drugs I be…”

“You have to stop the drugs,” the magistrate advised.

When asked why he should not be sentenced Langford stated, “My mother die, my father die….”

Langford was sentenced to pay a small fine, and the compensation of $50, or he will serve two six-week prison sentences consecutively. The cylinder was restored to the owner.

    @911:

If it was my brother would have been saying the same thing. And honestly unless someone force the drugs on him I refuse to feel sorry. It is no ones fault that he is being controlled by a substance; he should have never tried it in the first place.

    This Guy definitely needs help.

We really need a social programme integrated with Spiritual healing for this drug people. Hello they are someone’s child too just as you and I. Their parents and family hurting I am sure as well. Any social group thus formed would be welcome as well and people should look at volunteering their time – including parents/family of those guys – to see if with the help of the Father we can help these drug people. Family do not give up on them as well. And those who turn up their nose as well – It is not my business – well it is all our business as we do not whose turn will it be next. So the most we can do is “What can I do to assist in eradicating this plague in my community?” Whatever we can do for our country we should since with peace / love and unity we can all live in peace and serve our Heavenly Father in peace as well.

Lastly – those who want to become rich by hurting persons (you may want to say that they freely take or you did not force it on them) pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaase stop you dirty act of trying to get rich that way. This riches will not last and all the risks involved to go with that. Riches on the world are for a time. Why you bursting your heads to get rich and you can go nowhere with it. Lay your riches for after death. The greatest riches is Salvation for your soul. Come to the Father. He will set you free. No matter what act you may have committed before now. Ask for his forgiveness .. he will … he sent his only begotten son to die on the cross for all our sins. Repent and throw everything away. be a new man.

Again those of us who know better as well encourage those who are trying and it is hard for them. Do not remind them of what they have done before. It has been wiped away by our Heavenly Father. Our job is to encourage them and lift them up when they are falling. It cannot be done overnight but with love and patience not forgetting forgiveness we can lift and encourage. For asf we forgive other so the Father will forgive us as well.

That’s why we need a rehab centre.

@SMDH This is not a joke. This is another human being whose life is being controlled by a substance he cannot fight alone. If it were your brother you’d be singing a different song much-less if it was you. Don’t laugh at thy brother when they are down…help…do something…anything positive.

We have really become a nation of rejoicing when others fall or are down. I’ll pray for you Langford, even if I don’t know you.
