Diesel and beer bottle thief sentenced to 6 months imprisonment

Ian Gregoire

A Grand Bay man will have the next six months to reflect on his actions within the walls of the Stockfarm prison after stealing diesel and empty beer bottles from the credit union in that community.

Ian Gregoire pleaded guilty to theft and handling stolen goods yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Candia George.

His charges stated that between July 4 and August 12, 2010 he stole and dishonestly handled $587.65 worth of diesel and two crates of empty beer bottles costing $20 from a storeroom at the Grand Bay Credit Union.

The facts of the case which were presented by the police prosecutor, informed that the manager of the Credit Union Jermaine John-Phillip had noticed the items were missing when she arrived at the institution on August 13.

She made a report to police and Gregoire was investigated. In a confrontation with police at his home on August 16, Gregoire denied the allegation even after an empty container which fit the description of the one that was missing was spotted in his home. He later admitted after he was told he was being arrested.

“Ok officer is me. I will tell you,” he said.

Gregoire explained to police how he had taken the crates through a hole in the fence, and removed a stone in front of storeroom door to open it to snatch the said diesel.

He also told police that he sold the diesel.

In mitigation, the defendant told the court that he had only taken a small amount of diesel and had cooperated with the police.

“I didn’t give them a hard time. I told them…” he said.

“You have to learn to see people things and not touch it,” Magistrate George told him before passing sentence.

There was no separate penalty for the handling stolen goods charge.

some of you need to read the Magistrates ordinance rather than coming here and talk a bunch of crap. regardless of the offence, each man is entitled to being released on bail. Many things must be taken into consederation before one is remanded or released on bail. Especially in cases of indictable offences, should a magistrate do anything wrong, it will come back to hunt the prosecution’s case when it reaches the supreme court level. in the case of the last murder case, one can see that strict conditions were placed. Should that young man flee, his surety will be made to pay the court, $100,000.00

Instead of sending these guys to jail for these petty crimes why does the government look into community rehabiltation? What good is it to anyone sending these guys to jail? What you going to get is a revolving door syndrome where they go into reprison, come out, re-offend and go back to prison and the cycle continues.

Jail for diesel and empty beer bottles? WTFK is wrong with Dominicas’ legal system? He didn’t have to take them, but what the hell a credit union storing empty bottles and diesel for?

put the man to weed around the credit union and to clean up lalay in hot sun as community service, but jail for dat meantime ministers and drug dealers reaping off Dominica. George I hope if those big drug cases and voleh scene come to you, you will be just as mean and not show favouritism. You have a history of sending people to jail with long lecture for minor offenses and then letting even rapist walk scotts free. I watching you well!

I really don’t like thieves but unfairness and injustice are presently having a greater negative effect on me than these unfortunate thieves who do not have sufficient influence to keep the partial law enforcers at bay.

I would like that same sentencing guideline applied to the drug dealers. The poor or less fortunate in our communities always get the rough sentence, but them fellas with the rimmed up cars and well furnished houses get nothing. Now, stealing is a serious offence, but ALAS have a little mercy and stop giving them drug man free pass
