A Dominican living in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) has been denied bail after being accused of attempting to murder his girlfriend.
A bail application for Dominican Ovel Matthew was turned down by Judge Rita Joseph-Olivetti on Wednesday afternoon.
Matthew’s lawyer, Herbert McKenzie, had argued on Tuesday that his client acted in a fit of jealousy and insecurities about his girlfriend cheating on him.
However, during a discussion in the Judge’s chambers Judge Olivetti ruled in favor of Senior Crown Counsel, and denied the bail application.
Matthew, a construction worker, is charged with attempted murder; attempting to choke; causing grievous bodily harm; two counts of reckless and negligent act; assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of criminal damage.
It is alleged that on April 21, 2009 Mathew attempted to murder 26-year-old Savitree Ramphall.
According to the report, Mathew and Ramphall were involved in a relationship and lived together in Belle Vue.
The incident occurred at Duff’s Bottom in the vicinity of Island Department Store where the accused allegedly struck the victim with his fist on the right side of her face. She was driving at the time and reportedly parked the vehicle, pulled up the hand brakes, got out of the car, and made her way towards a parked Cherokee.
Mathew allegedly got into the front seat and proceeded towards her. It is alleged that when the victim saw the vehicle approaching, she moved to the other side of the Cherokee. Ramphall’s jeep is said to have gotten damaged in the process, and pieces of glass from it is said to have flown and cut her on her feet.
Matthew allegedly jumped out of the vehicle, grabbed her around her neck and began choking her. Ramphall allegedly passed out and fell to the ground while Mathew kept punching and kicking her in her face and other parts of her body in public.
The owner of the vehicle, who saw the incident from the moment the victim stepped out of the jeep, reportedly held on to the accused and told him to stop. The accused is said to have replied, “Let me kill her and go to jail”.
Police officers who were traveling in the opposite direction saw Matthew punching and stamping on Ramphall’s head, while the witness continued to plead with the defendant to stop.
The officers reportedly asked the defendant to stop and had to pull the defendant off the complainant.
Matthew’s trial will begin on February 15, 2010.

Some have no regard for the Cheating aspect of it. I hear all you. “She cheat is just leave her”. Like cheating is know issue. Yeah right. What some of you don’t realize is that cheating is not a game. Imagine you loving someone and being an honest partner and to have your partner on the other hand cheating.
Then one day that partner brings to you the HIV infection, yeah that’s what I said. Didn’t see that aspect of it right? Imagine that happens to you and then you are told your partner infected you. Tell me if it’s just a matter of walking away and leave her/him.
I consider cheating regardless to who does it, an attempt at a person’s life just the young mad got angry and acted out. I know he has to be regretting his mistakes like so many of us do.

I read recently that a Dominican was arrested in Antigua for murder
another in Tortola
and two others arrested in St Thomas for murder as well
a very henous crime was alleged to have been committed by
