Dominican jailed in Martinique for beating elderly over a cigarette

cigaretteA Dominican has been sent to prison for two years in Martinique for attacking an elderly man over a cigarette, according a report in French newspaper France-Antilles.

According to the report, the 66-year-old man suffered numerous facial fractures and had to undergo emergency surgery.

The Dominican, identified only as Andre V., has a long rap sheet of criminal activity in Martinique including 10 convictions for theft with a firearm and gang rape.

At the time of the incident, he had a blood alcohol level of 1.80 grams.

According to the report in France-Antilles, the Dominican and a St. Lucian, were returning from a party in Fort-de-France earlier this month when they met the elderly man sitting with a friend.

The two men asked for a cigarette but the old man said he did not smoke.

It was then that he was viciously attacked by the two younger men with kicks and punches.

“This is an unprovoked attack, it was ultra violent,” the prosecutor said when the matter appeared in court. “If the police had not intervened he might be dead.”

The police also found a wallet and a SIM card belonging to the old man on one of the defendants.

In their defense, both men said they did not remember anything about the incident.

“They do not deny the facts; they do not remember; there is a difference,” the attorney for the two defendants told the court.

The two were described as “cowards” by the magistrate.

In addition to the prison sentence, the two men were ordered to pay 5,000 Euros to the elderly man.

Awefull crime this is. Have you ever thought they could have been framed? Any transcripts of the case available? Can we take the claims of the police as gospel truth? Just asking..

Did u read that the police found a wallet and sim card belonging to the victim on one of the accused, so how can u come up with the thoughts that they could have been framed?

      • December 29, 2014

Only a thoughtless person is going to try to excuse this kind of crime unless they like the defense lawyers get paid for doing so. To these people the evidence is not important. In this case Anon had not even read he story. This is another example of a totally mindless person coming out in defence of an obvious criminal.

These are the kind of individuals who speak or write to excuse any wrong doing whatever it is. They have no terms of reference and no objectivity. When they look at the guilty person within their hearts they identify with that person so naturally they defend him or her, or they seek to justify their actions.

It is altogether different for those who accept the Bible as the Word of God. They have adopted the New Testament moral code as the standard God has set for human behavior. For them right is right and wrong is wrong . Being on he side of justice they have no problem letting the evidence speak for itself.

The punishment makes it more ridiculous again,,,he should be sent for minimum 20 yrs. because that old man could have been his father ,nasty bastards ,thiefs with no respect for any law nor human beings like themselves ,he should be sent back to his country, knowing that his convictions can make a little exercise book no need to keep a man like this in a foreign country,he brings shame and disgust to dominica and the population….

  3. December 23, 2014

If the man had cigarettes he would not be obligated to give one away or even sell one.

He said he did not smoke therefore it should be assumed he did not have a cigarette. The victim could not give what he did not have. This makes what was done to the man not only a criminal act but totally unreasonable. His attacker is a danger to society. He should not be on the street.

The victim is sixty six years old. Dominica is a nation with good values. One of them is a healthy respect for the elderly. Not everybody adheres to the values that are part of Caribbean culture but most Dominicans respect their seniors.

For a Dominican to commit such a violent act in another country is a disgrace  to his homeland which deserves much better.

Several commentators have expressed the opinion that two years is not enough. As a former licenced private investigator (P.I.) 8) turned evangelist I believe in justice and in keeping the public safe. No, two years is not long enough! I would have no problem with ten years. Did somebody suggest a good whipping :?: That first :!:

We have our share of this and other crimes in Canada which are too numerous to mention including lack of respect for the elderly.
Remember a few years ago in Toronto a man was murdered for $2.00? This was all they got on him.

      • December 29, 2014

        Nobody is denying this.

Canada has more than its share of crime. Maybe worse than some places in the Caribbean. In the cigarette murder it was the light sentence that caught my attention. I am not saying worse has not happened in Canada.

About the man killed for $2.00 in Canada. I do not recall this case. Obviously it was a terrible thing. You seem to imply that the killer received a similar ridiculous sentence. If so shame on Canadian justice.

Canada had the death sentence for murder until the mid 1970s when a Roman Catholic Prime Minister  abolished capital punishment. He also decriminalized homosexuality. The honorable gentleman was rewarded with a lavish Catholic funeral no doubt for a portly sum. I’m talking $$$$$$$$$$$ :!:

When it starts in the U.S. it appears to spread like a cancer..
And by that I mean this garbage, that when these unruly savage beast go out and commit these savage acts they are mentally unstable, off medication and needs help…
I’m so sick and tired of that trash talk, that I would round up the folks who are letting it out as well as the unruly beasts that can’t behave themselves and lock them all up in jail.
These days everyone who commit such terrible crimes are (1) mentally ill (2) did not take their medication and (3) is in need of help.
Blame it on the rain, blame it on the moon ,blame it on the stars…
Starting in the U.S and going down to the caribbean, these people are just fooling themselves.
It is simple a break down of discipline all round. End of story, the bible tells us so clearly..

Blame it on TV, Internet and other technology, what they see, hear and read about. They want big money.
I recall those days when D/ca had few crimes and what we called petty thieves. They also had more respect for the elderly.

    • December 25, 2014

May God shield us from the liberal influence coming from the USA. We like their money so we welcome them as tourists. But some of them come with attitudes and habits that are offensive to those of us who want to hold onto the morals and values that are part of our heritage.

Our nations have enough problems of our own without taking on those of the USA. The American president is pushing smaller nations to accept gay rights. Letting criminals off on medical grounds is appalling. Governments feeling pressure from the left of their constituencies to reform are happy to point to the States as an example. Some will do this without even waiting to see how well the changes have worked for the States.

In these trails there are usually two psychiatrists to represent each side who totally disagree. In the end it falls into the hands of the jury. Usually not a single jury member has any training in psychiatry or the behavioral sciences. The verdict is like rolling dice. The end is entirely a matter of opinion.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

So whatever happened to the police that beat up Pappy?

    • December 23, 2014

They got away with it because the public sat on their hands and kept their mouths shut.

You must learn how and when to make a noise. All it takes for evil to succeed is for good people :-D to do nothing.

Next time talk to the editor :-x of your best newspaper. Ask him (or her) to put their best investigative reporter on the case. Insist on a timeline. It is proper to ask when you can expect to see the story. Insist on updates.

The police are not the final authority. Even the chief has somebody over him (or her). There should be a minister of justice somewhere or the equivalent. Or you talk to your nearest politician. 8)

I am fully aware of the problems we are having in my own country and in the USA with rogue cops. You do not have to remind me! I speak out here to when and how I can.

This is disgraceful!! Mind you he might be suffering from mental illness. Let’s not judge him, disgusting and awful as what he’s done is. Rather let us pray for him and for the very unfortunate victim.

    • Titiwi
      December 23, 2014

Pray you say, pray? Don’t you read the report. That man has a long rap sheet with ten convictions already and all you can say is pray for understanding? maybe you have no respect for the law yourself.

      • The Facts
        December 24, 2014

Prayers are good. We should always pray and never cease praying. This is a command of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the disciples and the church. It is something you should commence doing not only for criminals but for others.
St. Padre Pio of Italy said, “If you pray you will be sure of saving your soul. If you do not pray you will lose your soul.”
When he was dying he was asked what message he would like to leave for the world. He replied. “Pray and get others to pray.”
Those saintly people knew what it was to pray. It is something everyone should emulate. It also gives much peace of heart and consolation which comes from God as we pray.
Little Titwi, you should try this sometime; in fact, immediately. Pray for yourself, your family, D/can nationals and the rest of the world. Your salvation. depends on this.
As someone stated, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, you’ve never been a mosquito.” You know how mosquitoes can sting and make people hop when they get stung. This is what praying and evangelizing do to the soul. Try it you’ll like it.

why we always have to say people have mental problem when they do dumb things like that. He was not mental when he was at the party, when he drunk but he mental because he got caught and charge for this hideous crime.

      • The Facts
        December 24, 2014

Sad isn’t it? This is how the Law also operates, especially in Canada. People kill and also dismember their victim. The man’s attorney (paid for by taxpayers) tries to prove that he is mentally sick. Presently, there is one before the Court in Montreal, Quebec. This is why some people do what they do knowing that they could be deemed insane, receive a lesser sentence or even acquitted.

    • December 23, 2014

Of course he is suffering from a “mental” illness. It is called sin. What this ungodly wretch did was only one symptom of the malady that has plagued the human race since Adam and Eve curtailed it out of the garden.

The good news is that he can be saved. God will change him from the inside out if he will trust the Lord Jesus and receive Him as his personal Savior.

Mental illness does exist but it is used as an excuse for far too many crimes. Defence lawyers encourage their clients to plead not guilty on grounds of mental illness or defect. It is not unusual for two psychiatrists to disagree as to whether or not the accused was criminally responsible at the time of the crime.

God holds us responsible for our actions. We cannot always control what happens to us in life. But we can control how we respond to what happens to us.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

These two guys most be in drugs or mentally ill to commit this act.

    • The Facts
      December 24, 2014

Some of us would never think of doing something like that. On the contrary, we help others as the elderly.
Those criminals are wicked of heart, heartless people who should be severely punished. If they are on drugs, they allow the drugs to go to their heads. It is also for this reason why these drugs should never be decriminalized. It is better to stay away from drugs.
Having stated that, tonight I heard on the News, somewhere in the US where these drugs are now legalized, many poor people are flocking there to live. Of course they need to be fed and housed, to the extent that the Salvation Army is overwhelmed and employed additional staff to cope. Can you imagine that? So much for decriminalizing illegal drugs. The authorities soon pay for it and financially so including health-wise for doctors’ fees, medication and hospital costs. We know those who ingest drugs die young. Governments that have not yet decriminalized them need to pay heed.
One thing, Canada’s Prime Minister is not in favor of decriminalizing it. I view him as a moral man and on other matters. He is a Christian. This is why I will vote for him and his Party. It is not yet confirmed if he will be running for “a third term” in October 2015. We will hear in time. We Canadians do not make an issue of the terms. If Canadians think he and his Party did a good job and are suitable for another term, so be it. We will find out on the night of that Election.

As an evangelist with a ministry that is registered with the Government of Canada as a non profit religious organization (LIVING HOPE MINISTRIES) I am not suppose to get involved in politics to the point of telling our people who to vote for.

Sufficient to say I appreciate your comment.

As a Bible teacher I must tell people what the Word of God says about the moral issues of the day, and teach Biblical traditional family values. My message is if you are a Christian vote for the candidate who best stands for righteousness and reflects your values not somebody who condones immorality and promotes unhealthy practices.
