Dominican UWI student attacked in Barbados

attackedA Dominican student at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus in Barbados was reportedly brutally attacked in that country, Dominica News Online has been reliably informed.

A source, with knowledge of the matter and who prefers to remain anonymous, told DNO the attack took place on November 12, 2015 when the student was walking home after a class.

According to the source, the student was hit at the back of her head with a blunt object and dragged into a bushy area. She sustained injuries in the process.

The source further said the students arms, legs and mouth were bound with duct tape and her clothes ripped apart while she begged her attacker not rape or kill her.

“She begged him to take all her possessions in exchange for sparing her life,” the source noted.

The attacker then took all the student’s jewellery and proceeded to pour kerosene on the student and made three attempts to set her ablaze, the source said. However, all attempts failed.

The student is now traumatized by the entire experience.

It is further reported that the incident took place on the same day a rock was thrown through the window of a Dominican student who didn’t open the door to someone who refused to identify themself after knocking.

DNO was told the matter was reported to the police and District A Station of the Royal Barbados Police Force is investigating the matter.

DNO contacted the station and the number of a Police Public Relation Officer was given but several calls to the number went unanswered.

Meanwhile the source said students are becoming increasingly concerned.

The source noted that a Grenadian student was attacked recently and two exchange students were attacked at a beach near the school’s campus.

The source is now calling on the authorities in Barbados to increase security patrols outside the campus.

“The main issue is that we have been reporting all these incidents and we are not seeing an increase in campus security patrol,” the source pointed out. “We have seen a few police officers driving through the area but it (the attack on the Dominican student) hasn’t been the rude awakening that it should have been.”

On November 9, the US Embassy in Barbados issued a travel advisory because of increasing crime in that country.

In a message to US citizens the Embassy warned of “a recent surge in robberies involving the use of firearms and high levels of violence”.

It pointed to incidents including a mugging in the South Coast community of Hastings, where assailants attacked pedestrians after dark before escaping in a waiting vehicle and reports of men posing as maintenance workers to gain access to homes in a residential neighbourhood near the US Embassy.

The message also reports about groups of men attempting to lure vehicles into stopping by pretending to have vehicle troubles or by placing a baby in a car seat by the side of the road and then beating and robbing the vehicles’ occupants.

To hold a disposition where you intend to boycott Barbados is ridiculous. Crime exists everywhere. It is your duty to safeguard yourself as much as possible. So a female walking on a desolate road by herself at night was not a very wise decision. What happened to her is unfortunate but one must remember that you are in a strange country. I have never been to Dominica but i have heard it is beautiful and even though a Dominican man ,going by the alias Shabba, with HIV was in Barbados raping women and little girls last month, that would not deter me from visiting Dominica. You have page to highlight Barbados crimes. why don’t you highlight the fuckery your people doing down here.
And as for that warning the us embassy published… the irony is uncanny. america the land of continuos persecution and genocide of blacks, large empires of corruption, drugs and murder.

Dont throw stones when you have glass windows.
    Crime is everywhere!!

Excuse me? who say Barbados is the island of NO crime? they hide their crimes because of their Tourism image but that island his a high crime level.. they hiding it.
I don’t know how or what happened because in my days, we never left campus on foot; I lived at Oxnards and I never even took public transport except in the morning to class, and even then, I was not feeling safe, the University provides a shuttle; but anyway sometimes, those dam shuttle drivers does act so dam ridiculous that sometimes one just feel to walk.. but that’s a big risk she took by walking, I only pray that she recovers and that Cavehill does something about it…. state man… is us foreign students that supporting UWI, the campus territory students don’t pay a dime….

Hide crimes? Do you get access to Barbadian newspapers in your country? Whatever goes on here is plastered across the paper as it happens. And I have lived in Barbados all my life, walked the UWI path several times and have never been attacked, so don’t make it sound like it is the norm, not to say that it is safe to walk through any bushy path. Also, Barbadian students DO pay their tuition as was implemented from 2014, so get informed. And finally, I am glad the student is safe and hopes she fully recovers soon but it must have been her extraordinary ability to speak through the duct tape that was placed on her mouth that saved her life.

Very sad to wake up to such a disturbing news involving our Dominican student , we are no longer living in the old school days and we have to do every thing humanly possible to safeguard ourselves, let me offer a little advise to you students , when walking to or from school please don’t walk with your headphones in your ears listening to music or otherwise, the attaker can be coming to to get you n you will not hear , neither should you be occupied in doing things on your cell phone such as texting or playing games, n it would be important to have a pepper spray n a lil pen knife handy at all times , this lil advise from a none schooler can save your life , God bless you Da students.

    November 16, 2015

This is sad and scary for especially students and Dominican ones. I do agree she should be sent home but must first be treated.
I have been to Barbados a few times and sea-bathed there. Due to these attacks, I would not be interested in spending time there in the future.
Barbados has been a bad place for a long time even though it did not appear so. I know some people who have wrought iron doors in their homes also leading to their bedrooms. Through the years as in other places, B/dos got worst.
There are many more bad people in those countries. I do not know what the government/police authority is doing about that. If this trend continues, and travel agencies and tourists hear of such, B/dos will lose tourists. It is for this reason why these authorities may not broadcast those incidents.
The Dominica government should be in contact with the B/dos government about the attack on the D/can student. I would not encourage D/can students to remain in B/dos.

Oh my heart goes out to that individual. … and the ones who witnessed this gruesome trauma inflicted on a sister. Wow I do hope the culprit is apprehended so that this doesn’t become a trend. It’s such a pity that one should endure this. For those who are being so sarcastic about this political thing, NB// This cruel world is run by Poitical Gestures….. the Hemisphere evolves around politics. #Democrocy is good politics so please let people express their thoughts. I applaud the young lady for the guts she portrayed by asking to take the belongings but spare her life… there you know she can recover, it will take some but she’s able to Persue her goals.

Boy, this is what I call obsession! There must be a way to bring Mr. Skerrit into the discussion even for a crime in Barbados! From where I sit, we are heading to a dark place with this hatred!

Dominican student, whoever you are. I do empathise. It must have been a terrible ordeal for you, particularly in a strange country. May God hold you in the palm of his hands. Have no doubt, He was there protecting you after being doused with inflammable liquid and the perpetrator was unable to start a blaze? Talk about God’s hand in this. Start to, if you have not done so before or continue even more if you have been doing so, to praise Him all the time.

Hello and good evening my people. Let us all hope she make a full recovery a specially psychological because this was a very traumatic incident for her. Now I know who she is but we shouldn’t release the name of a Sex Crime Victim even if it is an attempted Sexual Assault. I think we should write letters to the Prime Minister of Barbados, The Police Commissioner and the head of Campus Security requesting better protection of our citizens and students.

Am not surprised at all. It was time the crime situation in Barbados come to light.. This nation has been masking their crime for years. People were being raped, murdered, robbed and Barbados Nation was just masking these crimes. Barbados please nip this thing in the but before your economy which is totally dependent on tourism suffers.

Sorry to hear about this vicious attack against this sister who was about her business. There is a saying that trouble comes to meet you even in your own home. I agree with Christine concerning the psychological trauma that will linger with her. Indeed the authorities need to take drastic measures as far as securing protection for the students as well as the public.

Seems like humans have lost their minds the world over. Many have forgotten to be at peace with themselves, each other and with nature and so all hell has broken loose. There is just too much going on in this world.

Barbados needs to nip this, otherwise an economy based on tourism is about to go down hill…..Leading to persistently more crime.

Papa Lord Jesus. No man. Allu I really cannot begin to imagine how she is handling or coping with this. The government of Barbados should pay her passage and send her home immediately, where she can be with her family and friends.
She needs that level of support right now. And reimburse her the tuition money and residence fee too.
She will need time to sort this trauma out.

      November 16, 2015

While I am empathetic to the suffering this individual has gone through, and I am greatly disturbed by this violent act, I am curious as to whether it is standard protocol for the country where the act occurred to financially compensate the victim by \”paying their passage and sending them home as you put it\” for the evil deeds of a criminal? I do agree that perhaps the university could make some provision for the student to defer enrollment until some later date in the future if this is her wish. As to the government\’s responsibility extending beyond finding the perpetrator of the crime, I\’m don\’t agree.

No No No. Allu serious man? So now not even students abroad are protected? What kind of security do they have and why did it take so long for it to be made aware of?

Parents are already so afraid to let go of their children as they go abroad to study and so concerned about the fact that, no matter their age, they must leave the nest sometimes. Added to that, they are now facing more concerns about the “so called” security on campuses. I, for one, cannot understand why these countries are protecting their own for the sake of reputation as opposed to guaranteed safety, especially for foreigners or foreign students.

Furthermore, it makes me wonder. Dominicans and other countries as well, should keep their money within their economy and protect their own, by putting educational policies in place and building links within the country. With that we will not have to leave. This situation is terrifying and traumatizing even for those of us reading the story. This is madness.

I personally am of the view that not enough is being doing to address the situation. The excuse that has been given for the lack of police patrol is not enough manpower; this isn’t satisfactory; we are talking about people’s lives here. the gravity of the attack on this lady speaks volumes. the psychological impact that such an attack can have is immense and the emotional scars will be everlasting. the lackadaisical manner in which the authorities are handling this issue is just not good enough

      November 16, 2015

Steve the world has not gone mad!

Some people simply allow themselves to be used as a tool of the devil. Life is hard everywhere, when people are employed the mind wanders, most of them turn to illicit drugs to forget the pain; however since drugs and alcohol are mind altering substances rather than causing the users to deal with the stressors life!

The urges them proceed towards the route of crime.

Barbados has always been a place of high crime; and that is one place where the criminals do not hesitate utilize fire to kill their victims; some Bajan\’s has used that method in England, and here in the United States too!

      • Barbara Saunders
        November 17, 2015

        Well, well, Mr. Telemaque!

So surprised to hear you say that life is hard everywhere! Even more surprised to hear that people fire on their victims in the mighty USA, the land of milk and honey.

I thought that “hard life” was created by the incompetent Roosevelt Skerrit and his gang and was totally as a result of their corruption. I also thought that the only place where it existed was in that backward place called Dominica where all doctors are quacks and we all feed on green fig and saltfish (very expensive food now if you ask me).

As they say, if you live long enough you will hear quite a lot! Have a nice day!
