High Court Judge Brian Cottle has ordered Ian Douglas to pay $30,000 in damages and legal costs of $4,500 to Edison James for defamation six years ago.
Douglas had stated that former Prime Minister James stole money from the Venture Capital Fund operated by the AID Bank.
He said his defamatory statement was based on information contained in Tony Astaphan’s preliminary report of August 2000 on allegations of corruption in government under the United Workers Party.
Douglas was supposed to pay $45,000 to James but because Douglas admitted to the allegations and the law provides that the cost should be reduced by one third, the final cost was $30,000.
The ruling comes days after a court ordered Claudius ‘Kon Kom’ Letang to pay James damages in the sum of EC$45,000 for libel.

The point is Douglas said he took the money, which was not true. The report by Tony did not say he took money but infact a commpany with whom he was closely associated submitted a proposal to the bank for money from the venture capital funds to establish a quarry close to the airport. Peter Carbon, the then minister of Agriculture & Environment signed a lease giving the company permission to quarry on states land. In the business plan, all the money which the company expected to make were only from Government projects, a major one being the airport they planned to build. Isn’t that corruption (Minister setting up themselves)

Yes it is the one and same Brian Cottle. What this shows is that he has a personal issue with Mr Lennox Linton. The judgement against was/is wrong because he hasn’t given a legal reason for coming to that decision. A good read is Sir Brian’s article a couple weeks ago which will, if you read between the lines, explain why Brian Cottle was wrong.
The fact of the matter is that the Labour Party people are too gentle. They need to sue Angelo, Blessings and the rest on Q95 to teach them a lesson.
