The police have identified the human skeletal remains discovered at Hillsborough Estate in Layou and one man has been charged with murder.

The remains, discovered on November 26, 2016, have been identified as belonging to Derrickson John Charles, 34, of Massacre. He was reportedly missing since 2014.

According to Police PRO, Acting Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste, the police have concluded investigations into the matter and a charge of murder have been laid against Charlesbert Morancie of Yampiece, Stockfarm.

Jno Baptiste said the alleged murder incident occurred between the 11th and 25th of November 2014 at Hillsborough Estate.

He said Morancie was taken before the Magistrate’s Court on Friday 2, December 2016 and was remanded in custody at the state prison.

That’s why me could never live in the Caribbean. Police too slow and laid back to take anything seriously. Most of all you get paid off anyway. Most of all you are crooks. This is people’s lives your messing with!!!
Regular training is a must and new equipment is just as important to solve these crimes on these Caribbean islands.God help my people

It is my feeling, after he disappeared the police already had a clue of at least the situation, who he befriended, who he was with and where he was. It probably could be that someone squealed on the murderer. The rest was put in place when he was found.
His family and other Dominicans are pleased that his body was found and that the suspect is charged with murder. It is relieving that a murderer is caught. Hopefully he will remain incarcerated.
To a certain extent, his family’s mind is at peace. No more wondering where he is and what happened to him.
    Good job Police!
I heard on the Toronto News that someone whose family member disappeared (many people disappear) that, “what bothers them is, they do not know what happened to their loved one.” It is a real suspense and like an open book waiting to be closed.

Imagine a child is born and is loved. That child grew up and becomes a murderer; some, more than once. Is this not a wasted life?
Everyone deserves to live. No one has the right to take a life, at least, no member of the public. He deprived a man of his life and of ever seeing his loved one again on this earth.
What would cause someone to have the heart to murder another and to live with it for that long? When they murder, they can never live happily and at peace. The thought of what they did will haunt them. They will see visions of what they did and who knows, visions of the one they murdered that some are forced to confess.
It is also difficult for their family to know that their very own committed murder. All families are grieving, one way or the other. He must have already been unhappy knowing what he did. Now that he is arrested, it has just begun. He walked free for two years. Let us see if he will ever walk free again.

Not if I have anything to say about it

someone has to pay the orice of justice for the murder of my brother. I’m not going to seat idly by and let there be no trace of my brother left.

Whomever did this with will pay the price of their actions. There has to be some justice for our family…. someone has to rot in jail, someone will never know happiness in this life again.

Imagine if someone murdered your family – and not just that… you have nothing left of him.

According to my observations, crimes in this country are carried out mafia style. the police seems to have got this one right so far but Ihope there will not be any glitches charges wise. That means that training & equipment for the police is in order . vehicles are important but they need much more tht from the passports money. even the police training school need to be upgraded to a police academy.

Credit to the CDPF, for I always know that they can work well, we are just under estimating them to much,
So now that we have proven how good that they are at their work, how about the attempted murder on the 2 elderly citizen of St. aroma on Christmas morning 2010 Gun Emmanuel and his wife? so we can clearly see that some higher powers are inter fearing in that because they them selves might be the ones involve in the attempted murder

Good Job on the part of the police. DNO if a man was charged, why is there no photo of the person that did the crime? just saying he has been charged, the public needs to know who the criminal is.

UPDATE: The original story stated, “Preferred Murder Charge.” Since then, DNO has changed it to state, “Charges Have Been Laid.” Prefered murder charges (an old crown term), is different from outrightly charging a suspect.

What is so hard to understand?

The remains were that of Derrickson John Charles.

Charlesbert Morancie was charged with murder in the matter.

The alleged murder incident occurred between the 11th and 25th of November 2014 at Hillsborough Estate.

And here you are…. what else you wanted? For the police to give you all the info about the case?

Its a very a simple story.

      • John Riviere
        December 6, 2016

When did a murder become “a simple story”?

    • Dominican-West Indian
      December 6, 2016

Really “true grit”?! That’s just simple English. The police found and later identified the human remains of Mr. Charles (from Massacre) and they’ve charged Mr. Morancie (from Stockfarm) for the crime of murder and he’s now on remand at Stockfarm. And I’m sure we’ll hear more about it as more information is made available. You shouldn’t be there bashing DNO if you’re too impatient to take your time and read the article of if you just want more information. Dem man (and ladies) doing a good job of always “breaking the news” so take it easy and wait for “the latest updates”.
Good job, DNO. Keep doing what you doing. We appreciate it.

WOW!! This is interesting!! hmmmm, Good Job CDPF!! however you all put them pieces together I’m impressed after such a long time the killer was even found so quickly too. Now the family of the murdered man can put his bones to rest properly.

Well, it is clear the report says according to the Police PRO…DNO should not be blamed for missing details when the report came from the police. Well done Dominica Police Force.

  25. Anansi
    December 6, 2016

DNO, either this article makes no sense, or the police report is confusing. Have the police received a confession from Charlesbert Morancie? If not, and if it is a preferred charge of murder, then PRO Jno.Baptiste’s statement about the incident having occurred between the 11th and 25th of November, 2014, is inconsistence with this type of charge (read again).

Another reason why the prosecution is losing so many cases.

let’s just say that perhaps his conscience was beating him because I too have asked that question countless times. Life happens mysteriously and that is any answer I will never fully get. But i’m forced to believe that perhaps my bro wanted me to be in Dominica when he remains were found. Or perhaps, he and my older brother who died on Nov 1 met up somewhere and felt like the time had come for his sister and mother to find him? No one knows.

whatever the case maybe, my brother was killed – the when he was found is not that important. The fact that his remains were found means that our family can find closure – somehow.

        December 6, 2016

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I visualize what it is like for you and your family. God be with you and your family as you grieve his loss.
Now, yes you have closure and can give him a proper burial. In his spiritual world he wanted to be found.
One day your thoughts, this mystery of finding him and you being in Dominica at this time, will be revealed to you. Know that God works in His mysterious ways.
May He bless you and your family and strengthen you at this time..
May his soul rest in peace. Amen! God is merciful.
