J.E Nassief to compensate ex-employee

The Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) has been successful in providing presentation to another of its members.

WAWU challenged the termination of the employment of John Jno Baptiste, a former employee of J.E Nassief.

Secretary General of WAWU Kertiste Augustus says a tribunal has ruled in the favour of Jno Baptiste, awarding him a compensation package for wrongful dismissal.

“The member was employed for over seven years, was terminated and we challenged it. We made our presentation to the tribunal and they found that we were correct,” he said.

Augustus said the tribunal ruled that the issue of serious misconduct by Mr. Jno Baptiste could not be proven by the management of J.E Nassief.

“They found that the termination was unjust and the employment of Mr. Jno Baptiste was wrongfully terminated and on that basis awarded compensation to him,” he said.

His former employer has until April 30, 2011 to settle the undisclosed amount.

When I read the headline, I was hoping that it was my brother’s case and it sure was. I’m happy that he won his hearing. What Nassief did to my brother was wrong.
Even their own employees and supervisors disagreed with their decision. We may not have the clout, name and money of the mulatto in Dominica, but my mother taught us to be strong men and never stop fighting for what we believe in.
This case has been ongoing for more than three years now. Justice will always prevail no matter what.

    Good news for John.

But, the Crook (the other one, I not calling name) must tell his members why he sold out M.G case. He will be exposed in due time.

I am pleased to hear that this former employee won his case and will be compensated. Let us hope that the ex-employer does not challenge it further.
In years gone by some employers got away with a lot. Some of them were rude to employees, not treating them well, not according them their due rights and dignity, underpaying them and firing them at that for no good reason. It appears that there was no Law then to protect employees.
As I always state, Dominica has come a long way and is progressing in many respects. All employers should, hopefully, learn a lesson from this case and any other such cases. I do hope the compensation is sufficient.

There is a lot of exploitation by the elite towards workers in this country. It is so unfortunate the process takes time as well as many people are not bold or do not stand up for their rights.

I am very happy this man got compensated.
