The young man being led out of court on Wednesday

A juvenile from Marigot has been charged with the murder of his grandmother.

He appeared in the juvenile court on Wednesday morning where the charge was laid against him.

According to the police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, Flora Pascal, 82, was found by her son in an unconscious state and bleeding from wounds to her head, at her home around 2:00 pm on April 7, 2013.

She was taken to Marigot Hospital where she was treated and then transferred to the Princess Margaret Hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Her 17-year-old grandson was arrested and charged with Grievous Bodily Harm.

On April 22, 2013 Pascal died at the ICU.

The grandson is now charged with the murder of the elderly woman.

A coroner’s inquest will be convened and a post mortem will follow.

Investigations are continuing, Inspector Carbon said.

The young man is being represented by attorney Joshua Francis.

My heart broke in pieces, just realize the people involved. To the boy’s father I say hold on……words just can’t express how sorry I am to hear of this saga.

The young man needed help, but as a dad, you tried your best. I feel for the child and even more so I feel for his father because I know this man loves his son and his mother. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

I am so so very sorry to hear that. It was an accident, and the young man needs help, I don’t think prison is going to help a child like that, I think he needs more than that. Keeping him locked behind bars will not help. I hope he finds bail, and be placed in a rehabilitative program.

I am so saddened by that news, I know the father and I know he is a great man, good dad and he tried all he could with this little boy. God please help him!

Some people are so what I don’t want to say….. Y’all ain’t know nothing but this young man and what he has been through but yet you wish bad upon him and say all of these negative things…. I work with troubled kids and I know what can happen when they have been pushed to the edge and can’t take anymore….. I’m sorry about the young man and this incident though!

Why is a 17 year old inflicting blows on an 82 year old woman up to the point of causing her death? Let alone his own flesh and blood? I’m sure this woman must have played a great role in his upbringing so where’s the gratitude, love and respect for the elderly? Regardless of what transpired on that fateful day , this should never happen. He needs to face the full extent of the law. This guy is just plain wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless if he is mentally disturbed.

Hey i cant stop people from writing comments because speech is free, but there are some real stupid and ignorant people in Dominica eh, omg.
How can some people run down their country by POSTING such stupidity on DNO.
Another thing is that DNO should have a responsibility as to what should be posted. If to their knowlege they find that a comment will give a negative view of the country and its people they should not post itbecause people are reading those comments and would think that all dominicans are uneducated fools who makes no sense.

My heart bleeds for the entire family.
To the father who tried to raise his son the best he knew how-as a single father. He moved him from school to school trying to see where this child could find his niche, away from bullying and to take care of his attention deficit problem. To all those teachers who tried with him-hats off to you(to those of you who turned him away let this be your lesson). To the grandmother-what a way to die. He was not always a “wicked” child. He was a loving boy who grew into a monster. Maybe we helped as an uncaring society. Maybe this was the only person he could fight and unleash years of frustration on…no mother to rock the cradle or vent. To the young man…this is a terrible act. I am sure you did not mean or expect your grannie to die. It just goes to show that the respect of the elderly must be so ingrained in our youth that even if they collar them at 21 years, they can walk away and not respond. What a sad way to die. This is something that the entire family has to live with…to the people of Marigot-So what? He was one of us. We claim him because we claim his father and relatives from here. RIP Ma Burnham. God be with you father and all the family. Prayers to all.

I know him and he is a pleasant young man. He would greet people with a smile. I wonder what lead him to do that. I know the dad must be in alot of pain. Maybe no one really understood what the young man was going through. Some of us have kids and don’t take the time out to relate to them until reality knock at out door. This is not the time to say negative things about this young man. I am glad his dad stood with him.

I am praying it is not the little boy whom I knew from a primary school in Roseau ,who was bullied by other kids all his school life because he was different and certain teachers use to make fun of him and ignore his complaint? if this is the child we as a society has failed him.

This is in no way to make an excuse for the young man. What happened was terrible act. Do we know of the circumstances that led to this young man responding in this manner towards his grandmother? My prayers are with the family especially his dad who took good care of his mom. This is so tragic.

      • April 26, 2013

Whatyou need to understand is we are not saying what he did is right.Study has shown that when someone is constantly bullied, they tend to pass what ever faustration they have after a while ,on people younger than them or on helpless individuals, because they feel stronger than them.As the person who is being bullied can’t bully the bullies back.I feel sorry for him because I know what he went through ,through primary school, where I was one of his few defenders.I understand from someone else that he was also bullied at high school too.Society has failed this young man!!!1

    @The truth is…….April 24, 2013

I love you post, in that you simply pointed out the reason for the happenings around us or far away from us today. Prophecy must be fulfilled and the things in prophecy are for the world–Dominica is part of this world–for we are human beings, that is who the world is.

As you mentioned, it is true that Adam did die but “death” in God’s vocabulary means spiritually and so that is the death that Adam suffered–meaning that he became separated from the God of Life–Light in the soul which is awakened.

Through Adam man enters this world in the same state of spiritual death–that is what the world is not taking heed of; man does not understand that he has no control of his existence if God is not first on his list; and he continues in his state of spiritual death, separated from the God of Life–unless he has encountered the “new birth”–Jesus said to Nicodemus: You must be born again.

Adam existed in the physical for 930 years, because God had already formed the existence of mankind, through him, God could not take back His Word, every person who now exist was formed in the spirit, we came in our mortal state–but God has His plan of Salvation and Reconciliation for mankind by His own blood–except that man has to chose to trust and obey Him, by his faith.

But who can understand that and to accept it today, as man continue to exist with a carnal state of mind, plagued with self pride and self conceit?

The further away man enters this world, from the first generation of Adam, the further away he exists in separation from the God of Love and Righteousness–that is the reason, prophecy must be fulfilled–God is a God of righteousness, because of Jesus’ Blood righteousness must prevail and evil destroyed.

    • April 25, 2013

Apart from all of this, the god of this world is also doing a good job producing his own, as he uses the soul of those who will not turn to the God of Life.

Just imagine that Jesus told the Jewish leaders who would not accept Him: “You are the children of your father the devil, he was a liar and a murderer from the beginning, and the work of your father you want to do” But that was since more than two thousand years ago, must worst for today, as Satan has been around planting his seed in the wombs of those who continue to remain separated from the God of Life.

And so man is wandering this world with a carnal mind, which is under the control of their human senses to feed their flesh–“but the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of existence in this world is not of the Father, it is of the world”.

“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is Life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God”. Those who are in the flesh do not know God, as God does not know them.

17 years of age is way past time for a person to learn about God’s Ways and to come to know Him, if that person had a willing heart.

The attitude and conducts of man today, is the reason Jesus said to His disciples that His return will be just like in the days of Noah.

“For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be”.

Let those who have ears hear what the Spirit is saying

@Justice and peace suggested that instead of asking what is wrong with Dominica, I should have asked “What is wrong with people?” However, though I understand his/ her concern, I stand by what I said because the things that are taking place in Dominica these days are very alarming and therefore it is not an individual thing but cause for national concern. Although these things have been happening in other parts of the world but we are use to them. They are very new to our culture and people and this sudden change started some 5 years ago. So many landslides, people getting burned to death in their homes, according to Minister of Health 29 infants died in 1 year, road split in two and sadly swallowed two of our footballers, mother stabbing two of her own children, juvenile charged for murder of Granny, Chistmas day bombing etc. Something is wrong friends, and the sword seems to be directed at us. When did you ever hear these sad things happening to Dominica? When King David took the man’s wife and killed him later the prophet told him that because of his evil act the sword would not depart from his house. That’s what we seem to be experiencing now. The sad thing is, our prophets may have drunken from that same wine and instead of rebuking evil they blessed them and we all paying for it in one way or another.

    • The truth is.......
      April 24, 2013

My fellow Dominicans, permit me to add a few words of comment to this article. A lot of us get carried away with the fact that these incidents are happening in our beloved country. Let me say this to us, that Dominica is part of the world that was cursed by GOD when Adam sinned. Therefore we are not immune to these things; its just a matter of time for our share to hit home. The prophecies in the BIBLE are for Dominica just as it is for the USA, Russia, China, Israel, or any other country in the world. CHRIST said that heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall not pass away. GOD said to Adam, the day you eat of that fruit you shall surely die. He disobeyed GOD and ate that fruit yet he went on to live for 930 years. Did he not die as GOD had said? Sure he did. He died spiritually, that is, he was not able to commune with GOD anymore. Sin and corruption began and because every one of us was in his loins SIN and corruption has been the order of the day for the human race. We saw how grave SIN was when Cain kill his brother Abel for no reason. This same thing continues to today and will continue to the very end. We are part of the world and have no one to point finger at but ourselves. For we must all reap the rewards and consequences of SIN. I pray that GOD would help us to trust his word for what it is. Bless his holy name.

        April 25, 2013

didn’t the same bible say that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father? so why should we pay for the sins of adam. King James really have us fooled with his writings.

Sorry, but your all a little slow. I started reading your retort to J&P, till u stated the timeframe of the change in our culture.

Our culture started changing way before that. You just only noticed it 5 years ago. We ARE heavily infulenced by media. The clothes we wear, food preferences, tv progs, movies of choice, attitude of annoyance.

Our “pack” mentality is raising so high, its almost that of the ant. Do what ever the “Queen” commands.

      April 25, 2013

“What is wrong with Dominica” and “These things are happening in Dominica” are two different statements. People make up a country; not the other way around. I speak the truth.
It is shocking to us all “what is occurring in Dominica”. We could also utilize these words. I am not generally a negative person. I like to stay positive no matter what transpired in the world in the past, in those ancient days, some of which do not really concern us in this era, except to be used as examples of learning.
I am not concerned what happened to Solomon and David in that era. It is all history. I am concerned about what is occurring today. What we are experiencing now are the sins of those people of specifically today who commit crimes/murders.
I do not wish to delve into your personal and religious life, the latter if you have one. When last have you fervently prayed for Dominica and for nationals that crimes/murders may be eradicated? If you reside abroad, it could also be done from afar. God hears those prayers, if prayed from the heart with a loving, compassionate and generous one. In time He will do with them as He so pleases.
A holy Priest, since passed on, St. Padre Pio of Italy was asked when he was dying, what message he has for people, for the world – in general. He replied, “Pray and get others to pray.” God is the answer to all things. As we pray, patiently, we leave everything up to him, placing them at the feet of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is always amazing to read some of the foolish comments some people write, they make comments which has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand, comments which makes no sense at all: i. e. someone suggested that a person should shut their “face.”

That is so stupid, how can a person shut their face, when a persons face cannot open, one can only shut their, or close their mouth!

Someone brought politics into it: ” The minister of health reported twenty-nine children died! ”

What does the death, and what Timothy said has to do with someone murdering their grandmother?

The death of the children should be addressed elsewhere, perhaps rather than commenting about that here, the commentator should be looking into the cause, perhaps the findings might be malnutrition, caused by poverty of the parents, or they may all contracted some disease which has gone un-detected by health officials.

another stupid question: “was he arrested?”

How can someone ask a dumb question like that when there is a picture above showing the guy is escorted by police with his hands shackled.

Another stupid comment is that he is from Cane Filed, and just moved to Marigot, be caused of some crap!

I want to know what difference it makes: Cane Filed is not a foreign country; it part of Dominica, the same as Marigot. It is alleged that he killed his grandmother, if indeed he actually abused her thus, causing her death, wether he was born in Timbuktu, or under a rock, or in a crab hole in Dominica, if he has a criminal mind his birth place would not have changed that.

By the way Dorival Timbuktu, is a real place, existing in Africa, that is the place where the Worlds first University was created, and established. I suspect people such as Pluto, and others may have attended there.

Francisco I think you meant Plato…..

Plato could not have attended any university at Timbuktu because Timbuktu became a permanent settlement in the 12th century.

Plato lives in Greece, thousands of miles away between 428/427 BC – 348/347 BC.

      So that is totally impossible

it even have lawyers taking cases like that…..some people have too much guts

dat you doing your granny ?

and you even have representation in court

what about ethics in this profession?

Do lawyers have heart ? Are we a country of “anything for a lawyer” ?

The calypsonian did say ” anything for a dollar”

    LORD hear our collective voices

Not even GOATS and other animals that are safe in Fond baron/Loubiere….and also Giraudel that madness is now…beastility confession is noted.
And after the brutal murder in Giraudel…look at what we have now an elderly citizen DEAD DEAD DEAD—-YES WE CARE ? I THINK NOT !
WE need an islandwide closing down of the entire island in a massive match against violence and the old time laws have to be adjusted and new laws enacted.

People having sex with little children, animals, no respect for marriage vows, no respect for law, no respect for anything and they now worship money, lieing, playing humble but with an air of arrogance…some even want climb ladder through any means necessary; deception or otherwise.
Our country needs prayers, lots of it, pastors and priests alike have to join up with dreads/rasta; all must be involved…..
dat murder is our last major wake up call.

deepest sympathies for the family of the deceased.

There is no heart in those chests. Just an interval-based vacuum. The beating you hear is due to the pressure on skin, expanding and compressing.

Deadly April! The Minister of health reports 29 infants dead in one year, a frightening statistic for a small island like ours. Woman fished out of sea, man murdered in Layou, two fishermen missing, two footballers dead in accident, another man found dead in Giraudel, an unreported death of a decaying body found in Roseau, an elderly woman burnt to death in Fond Cole, any more?
Dominica, a supreme voice is sending a message to us. Rain, flooding and landslide in April, when the sun is suppose to be splitting the earth.

This boy has a societal problem which should be addressed. What could have caused him to injure his mother that led to her death? What did she do to him that caused him to do such a thing?
The police will have to perform their job to get down to the root of this. Since he was arrested for wounding her and was interrogated, if he told them the truth, they probably already know.
My mind is working and I am wracking my brains as to the cause of his unloving attitude towards his grandmother. :) I visualize that he was disobedient to her and she admonished him. She may have asked him to perform some chores and he refused to do so. Also, he may have asked her for probably money and she refused or did not give him what he expected. She may also have prevented him from going out. She may have warned him about keeping bad company and the perils of doing so. What else?
Who knows? This juvenile knows what transpired between the mother and himself. Aside from blaming him, prior to coming to other conclusions, it must be determined what led to his disrespect to the point of harming his grandmother and her subsequent death. Children try to have their own way which is a cause of their disobedience and disrespect to their family elders.
He is old enough to know better and so he is not to be excused. As a juvenile he needs help and rehabilitation. He will soon be of adult age. He must bear the price of his evil action.

The Dumbninicans (I hate that word but I am forced to use it here) are now fighting whether this kid is from Marigot or Roseau or Canefield or Timbuktu.

Does it really matters? He is a Dominican from Dominica who was charged with a crime. After a fair trial the courts will determine guilt.

Shouldn’t we be discussing crime, the effects of crime and how to tackle it?

Shouldn’t we be discussing what led a young man to commit the alleged crime?

What is society doing to our young people? Peer pressure, video games, lack of parental guidance, lack of role models…and so on.

Those are the things we should be discussing…not where this young man is from.

Why are you so sensitive? Use your common sense. They are not giving Marigot a bad name. Is he not residing in Marigot? If so and he wounded his grandmother who resided in Marigot which led to death, then this is the place which should be recorded and published.
I reside in Canada/Toronto. Countless thefts and murders are committed by our very own West Indians and some of West Indian parentage, most recently on Sunday when two of them went into a bank with guns, stole money and shot a bank staff and a man who tried to pursue them to catch them. One was caught on Monday. Someone snitched on him. The Banking Association offered a $100,000 reward for their arrest. One is still at large.
Granted, I am shocked about the escalation of crimes. Do you think I should feel ashamed that they are committed here or even by those people?
I do not know the people who committed the crimes and millions of people reside in this City. Why should I take offense when it is reported that those atrocities are committed here?
You should be shocked that murders/crimes have escalated in Dominica and that some of them are committed by young adults and juveniles.
Pray for your politicians, the Media, your country and nationals. Pray most of all for the youth of today who commit murder and other crimes. They are in need of God’s blessing and graces. Help them if you possibly can to avoid crimes in general.

What is wrong with Dominica these days? We seem to be going from one painful experience to another. From landslide doing damage to fire burning house, from people getting drown to the mysterious elderly couple house on fire on Christmas day, to road disaster, to bus driver being murdered at home, to juvenile being charged with murder of grandma, to mom stabbing children to death and the list just continues to grow. All these evils remind me of one in the bible by the name of king David 1Samuel 12:10, who had done wrong and thought he escaped; when he was identified the prophet told him that because of his evil, the sword would never depart from his house, and it sure did not! We must not just take these things lightly as it does seem to me that the sword is hard on us. Unfortunately in our case, the prophets of the land no longer seem to have a voice as they have embraced evil instead of righteousness which exalts the nation Pro. 14:34 and bless what they suppose to curse and rebuke.

Not Dominica; not all Dominicans; some people. Dominica is a country. People reside in it. The correct wording is, “What is wrong with some people?” Do your utmost to avoid generalizing. Place the blame on the person who committed the crime/murder. People reside all over the country and it appears not one area of Dominica has not been affected by crimes/murders.

Thanks for posting this comment. A lot of bad things are actually happening all around the world, more than usual. I really believe that our sins have reached up to heaven and God is judging the earth. It’s time for us to humble ourselves, and pray, and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways. Unsaved folks don’t understand these things, but its time for the christians to cry out to the Father and ask for forgiveness for our land. The prayer warriors need to rise up, not just the pastors.

      • Justice and Truth
        April 25, 2013

Do not make me laugh. What do you mean by “unsaved folks?” Has God told you that you are saved? Where is it in the Bible that it says you are already saved while living? Some of you are so falsely indoctrinated. It is false teaching for someone to inform you and others that you are saved. Think again.
Who are really saved while they are still living, in their mortal bodies? So because you read the Bible and listen to someone preach it to you, you are more saved than others? What you are saying, you are not a sinner and also that you will never sin until the day you die. Presumptuous! This is a sin against God. Saved people do not sin. They are no longer on this earth and are in Heaven.
St. Paul tells us “if we say we are without sin we make Our Lord Jesus Christ out to be a liar.” In addition, St. Paul also said: “He who thinks that he is standing secure be sure not to fall.” It is obvious you do not know all what is contained in Holy Scripture. Read/study it again, through and through and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you.
Many of us are practicing religious people who read the Bible and who perform acts of love. Yet, we do not consider ourselves yet saved since we are still in our mortal body. What we can say is, “We are working at it and hope to be saved” by the grace and mercy of God who alone saves souls.
Recall Our Lord said, “The last shall be first and the first shall be last.” Therefore, there is a lot of room in the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ and in Heaven for all his children whom he created, whatever their sins. All they have to do is to turn to him. Those who do and repent and live a holy life will eventually be saved. He is waiting with his arms wide open for sinners. As He also said, “I did not come for the righteous. I came for the sinner.” Who are righteous on this earth? Much more could be stated about that.

The police allege that someone has killed another. Yet, the best you all can do is to argue about the origins of the alleged perpetrator! Who gives a flying f… if the guy is from Japan? How does his origin alter the event and its ramifications? Do the villages/communities get rewarded for not having alleged perpetrators who come from their midst? Do communities miss out on salvation if a criminal originates from among them? He is alleged to have killed his granny. Isn’t this enough of an issue for us to occupy our energies? Aie ya i!!! SMDH!

When an intruder attacks an ants’ nest, every ant moves into its role. Some attack, some defend. Some run to search for an alternate home. And Dominicans? Dominicans, learn from the ants!

This is nothing new. It, danger was always at the door, except as the years progress it is getting worst. Look to the root of the cause of what is occurring in Dominica, namely murders. Be broadminded.
Godlessness is a cause of this. God is not blind, deaf or sleeping. I also attribute it to many who have lost faith, who have renounced their faith and joined other churches which were not established by Our Lord Jesus Christ and turned its enemies and immorality committed in the land which displease God.
