Juvenile faces court for stealing piggy bank, other items

One of three juveniles charged for stealing a number of items including a piggy bank in Canefield last week, has been remanded by a magistrate’s court until he can come up with a suitable surety.

The young man appeared before Magistrate Ossie Lewis on Friday morning, where he told the court that his deaf and dumb or “moo moo” mother could not stand him bail neither could his grandmother, who had worked the night before and needed her rest during the day. He explained that his uncle was also at work.

The defendant pleaded guilty to stealing $2,581.70 worth of items which include a digital camera valued at $457, four cell phones costing over $1,300 in total, an MP3 Player and a Piggy bank which cost $20 and had $320 cash inside. The items were stolen from Joana Proctor.

The matter was adjourned to January 1 at the juvenile court. According to the police prosecutor, the defendant committed the offense with  two other juveniles who already pleaded guilty  and for which welfare reports have been requested. Similarly, a welfare report was ordered for the defendant before he can be sentenced. When he returns to court in January, the facts of the matter will be read and he will be sentenced accordingly.

Since we, as a country, have not worked out the alternatives to incarceration, I say jail them! Look one person comment saying these are the same boys that stole from her family. That makes them repeat offenders! They are criminals! Jail them!

the thing is when you put them among long standing criminals, they in turn becomes hardcore criminals, that is the down side of jailing them, what the country needs is a juvenile correction center, where they get jobs training, but since dominca does not have that type of facility,i suggest a good flogging over a barrel, like back in the old days.

Their names are not published because they are juveniles. I do think this type of Law should be changed; no exception in Canada. If they can steal and that amount of money and items, create havoc, being a menace to society by breaking and entering homes and stealing, their names should be published. Why protect them? To do so the Law is protecting them which they are fully aware of and given the opportunity they will continue to steal. What other crime will they commit in the future?
At that young age they appear to be already chronic thieves. If they were not caught they would continue to steal and end up being hardened criminals. I hope the Social Service tries to rehabilitate them.
For my part they are also in need of harshly being reprimanded.
Let us see what the Court will decide about them.

      @ thomas

I hate to say this but what they need is a good beating for their young age. This may deter them from stealing and assist in rehabilitating them and hopefully root out criminal intent in them for good. They are fortunate they do not reside in the Middle East countries.
Ever since parents “spare the rod and spoil the child”, those children have got out of hand. Note some of them have become murderers. How sad. I have considered if this trend continues what type of society we will have in the future and world-wide as well. The situation is already bad as it is.

      @ sad

It shows how disrespectful they are. They are in dire need of discipline and other forms of training to make them become better children and future adults.
There are times we have to say, poor parents. It is not always their fault that children turn out in such a manner. We may tend to blame them but we must also hear their side of how they nurtured them.

And also tell him about the mercies and Grace of our Almighty Father. I feel good for you that you recognised your wicked ways and repented of it and turn to God. Who is a better one to motivate him that all is not lost.

      @ there is hope

Congratulations! You have done well. I wish you continued success throughout your life.
This is why we should never give up on people specifically the youth. There are times they are naive and so they associate with bad company and continue to do so. Due to their age, they do not detect the danger that lie ahead.
Yes, as the saying, where there is life, there is always hope. You could be a good model to them and instruct them accordingly.
There are some people and in progressive countries who in former years got into trouble with the Law and who were imprisoned. Since released, today, some of them spend their time, going about helping others as the youths. There are some who go on to be exemplary citizens. They needed a second chance and they got it. After all is said and done, they deserve a second chance. God gives us a second chance and many chances. Why can we not give them a second chance and to try to rehabilitate them? May those juveniles receive it. God bless you!

This is rather unfortunate but let us hopes that these young people will realize the seriousness and repercussion of their crime by having to go through the court process. While I do not believe this crime merit tarnishing their record some form of community service and suitable or responsible parenting would be the best course of action.
