Man beats ex-lover, ends up in court

High Court fineIt appears that Ronaldson Merrifield of Grand Bay cannot get over the fact that a seven-year love relationship he had with Tamika Dorival has come to an end.

He is now in trouble with the law after he went Dorival’s home in Tarish Pit, beat her repeatedly, smashed a door and smashed a glass table in the house with a camera.

According to the facts as presented in court by the prosecution, the two shared a relationship which lasted seven years but it eventually went sour.

On January 15, 2014, at about 1:00 pm, Merrifield went to Dorival’s home in Tarish Pit after sending her a text message.

On his arrival, Dorival was seen on the porch and he called out to her, “yow.”

She did not respond but retreated into the house and locked the door.

Enraged, Merrifield ripped open the door to gain access into the house. He then grabbed his former lover and proceeded to beat her.

Dorival ran into a bedroom but was followed by Merrifield who continued to beat her all over her body, resulting in injuries which required medical attention.

Not satisfied, Merrifield took a camera and smashed it on a glass table in the house, shattering it.

Family members intervened and asked him to leave.

They also asked Dorival to make a report to the police, which she did.

Merrifield was arrested on January 30, 2014.

In explaining the incident he told the police, “we were fighting and things started to fall in the house.”

He was charged with battary on female and malicious damage.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

When asked for an explanation by the court for his actions, Merrifield said Dorival had his property in her possession and this was the cause of the problem.

“I don’t have a bad temper … when I wrong I take it but she have my property and I want it,” he told the court.

Dorival denied having his property saying she placed everything in the yard for him.

But magistrate Bernard Pacquette told Merrifield that he cannot take the law in his own hands.

“You were in love with her…I know how you feel, I have been down that road before,” he said. “But you need to watch your temper because it can get out of control, keep your cool.”

He was fined $1,000 for the battery charge and $1,000 for the malicious damage.

He has three months to pay the battery fine or in default one month in jail and one month to pay the fine for malicious damage or spend one month behind bars.

He was also ordered to pay compensation forthwith of $1,091.71 or in default one month in the slammer.

Domestic abuse is not a joke ehh— she could have fallen, knocked her head on the glass table and died— whether it was his intention or not to kill her. He should have been put in jail- this sends a really bad message to other fellas out there.. especially the highly impressionable young boys that seem to indulge in bad behaviour.

This type of thinking and expectation originated from ignorant women who knew no better. Not all women felt that way and expected a beating from their man/boyfriend/husband.
The men financially supported them. It is as if they owned them and the women had no alternative but to take their blows whether they were injured, to grin and bear it as they continued to live under such demeaning circumstances.
Well, today, times have changed. Those women must wake up to reality and demand the men respect them or else.
Today, murders are committed against women, the likes of which never occurred in those days. Therefore, beating a woman and injuring her is nothing to be proud of.
Those women should be ashamed of themselves if they allow this to happen to them, men beating them as if they are old clothes as they are being washed.
We are in the year 2014 and moving on and ahead. Wake up women who would ever think of this and expect it. Demand your rights, respect and dignity. No one can accord them to you if you do not expect it and demand it. This is genuine pride, taking pride in oneself and preserving it.

      Jersey…

As a child, I was brought up in a single parent home….My old man pack and left my mum with 6 children to take care of alone.

She did this with pride and endless love.

However, I will be the first one to tell you that I was corrected several times in the form of belt lashes to guide me back on course when I strayed off. Looking back, I think these were done out of compassion and love, so that I did not end up in the hands of law enforcement officers 15 to 20 yrs later.

These law enforcement officers hand down these beatings with vengeance and brutality, even worse that what I got from my mum.

So I mean no disrespect to you…but sister….I would take my mums correction any day over that of law enforcement.

Love and Peace be with you.

What happens, if he does not add anything constructive to the relationship, it is not being nurtured; cannot grow and mature. Some men and women must comprehend that. As time goes by one party will be bound to get fed-up and want out of it.
The relationship is as good as dead, arriving at a dead end – a cul de sac, going nowhere. This is why some relationships break up and sadly ending in separations, divorce and violently, some with fatalities.
As for marriage, they might as well forget it for it will be doomed, will be a shaky one and a disaster.
If some people do not know that, have not yet learned it, they better pay heed for such a type of relationship is a destroyer of love, trust and happiness.
Who wants to reside under such circumstances? Only people who do not love themselves and do not want what is good for them.
Life is worth living and in a happy relationship/marriage. This is exactly what God wants for those who enter into such relationships; nothing less. Strive to be happy for life is short.

The law on domestic violence against women is tooo slack. It reflects how our society view women. Remember a year ago young lady get beat to a pulp infront a police. She did not press charges and guy got away. Beating anyone is asult beating your wife or girlfriend is a domestic dispute. This is crazy.

If it occurred in front of the police, the police should lay charges for it is a crime to beat anyone; it is also similar to murdering them. If a police noticed a murder, will he/she turn a blind eye or a deaf ear and not lay charges? Food for thought.

You and i both know the result of domestic violence and who 99% of the time end up dead or wounded. If there are men out there getting beat then they need to report and it needs to be treated as it is. Assult. My problem is it is happening to women and nothing being done and is only when some young woman dead we have all kinda things to say.

I will tell you unless the laws change if she is gonna hit the man first then better make sure is in self defence and make sure he cannot get up cause if he retaliates i will not have time ask who hit first. So my best advice to you is if a woman slaps you walk away and report to police.

Many children in bygone years throughout the world got beaten. Many today are disciplined adults. They would do the same to their children, if only the Law was not against it and would not punish the parents.
Pertaining to beating, parents must be careful not to injure their children. This is what is called abuse. A beating to make them behave and discipline them is not abuse.
Today, some people as the government have everything in the reverse. They do not call a spade a spade. This is why there are too many disobedient, unruly children in the world; no exception right here in Canada. You should hear the stories.
I do not know what type of authoritarian people they will be some years from now when they are adults and take their rightful place in society. It is bad enough. God help the world!

Magistrate Pacquette (I will attempt to remain calm and respectful)…..Are you kidding me? “You were in love with her…I know how you feel, I have been down that road before,” he said. “But you need to watch your temper because it can get out of control, keep your cool.”

So basically Mr. Magistrate you are telling this WOMAN BEATER, because you were in love with her you can beat her? What about sending a strong message to the men in Dominica. YOU DO NOT RESERVE THE RIGHT TO PUT YOUR HAND ON ANYONE BECAUSE YOU ARE ANGRY!!!!

Love does not make you beat your wife/girlfriend Mr. Magistrate. If that was your daughter, you would want to rip this guys head off or maybe you know how he feels because you are a woman beater. SHAME ON YOU. I remember growing up in a small village in Dominica and seeing how terribly men treated women and NOTHING was done about it. I remember seeing so called men tie up their “wives” that they supposedly loved and beat them like slaves. I promised myself I would NEVER put my hand on a woman and I’m proud to say that i’m wearing a uniform to protect them and i enjoy placing handcuffs on the so called men that abuse them.

Mr. Magistrate, you are in a position to help women NOT to sympathize with those who abuse them. Dominica HAVE to toughen up it’s laws to protect women and NOT to encourage those who abuse them. I encourage you men to shower your mates with love and affection and you see how she will cherish you as her king as you make her your queen.

    • ah ha
      February 4, 2014

Don’t blame the magistrate! She doesn’t make the law just interpret it and pass judgement based on what the law says.

She cant act on emotion and overcharge the man then to have her decision overturned for being excessive under the law.

You know who to blame? Parliament (Government and opposition) who should be looking to change and update laws and corresponding charges fines…. These are some of the things that should be discussed and debated in Parliamnet!

Guess what none of the women on either side of the political divide are championing these causes…. NONE!

Secondly there ARE many woman today that would still say that she deserves to be beaten, many that would accept the beating themselves and translate it to love or proof of masculinity of their man… Believe it or not!

So lets see what happens… which party will be the first to bring it up for discussion in Parliament!

As a child growing up my deceased grand mother would always tell me REAL men DO NOT beat women, they walk away…and I prove that day in and day out… it is hard but leave the woman alone… move on…

I’ve always wondered what the term “REAL men” means.

If a man beats a woman, is he a FAKE man?

I think that label of “REAL men” confuses the issue. Domestic violence is wrong, whether you real or you fake.

A man is convicted of committing a violent crime and he is fine $1000?

In another case a man is conviceted of shoplifting less than $100 worth of groeries and he is sentenced to 3 months in prison.

Does anyone else see the disconnect here?

I don’t like preaching violence but mister lucky is not my sister because all now so is me that would be doing time in the slammer. What happen to Dca men? A little gwo-pwel allu can’t take? Stupes man! Allu want to play macho and when woman walk allu bawling?

Thanks Magistrate Pacquette for taking a stance. Some may find the fines too small but you are doing a damn good job. Stick with precedence because the same ones calling for higher fines will be laughing at you when CCJ or court of appeals throw out the convictions. But Change Must Come…

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!

It is a real strong emotion. Self-control has to be exercised at all times. If not we all would be dead. We would beat, kill, “mash up” property. Can you imagine the mess? Come on. Get a grip. Every time you get angry, does not have end in violence. That is too much abuse of women. Her brothers, cousins should respond in kind? No. Ok, he got away.

So violent! Walk away and leave the woman alone. Stupid, Please institute mandatory anger management classes for him. I’m not sure if we have this I Dominica, but this type of counseling may help him.

Your mother that told him so. I don’t see your point in bringing the person’s mother in that; but for insult.

I know that you are just stirring the pot. Well you hear wrong. No we do not like licks. Bring those women who like licks for me to see. No we do not like licks. Spicy make-up? That is done without licks. Never violence. Bring the flowers, cook the dinner, clean the house once in a while and be nice. See what your wife will do for you.

Love your comment. However, there is enough proof to substantiate my account. I was at a forum where such topics were being discussed. The main speaker was a female psychologist. She said that there are some “Women” who actually tease their boyfriend/husband or lover to beat them and then make love. If you want further evidence or information on such behavior i would be willing to have the psychologist provide you with such data. Please note, that I am fully against any type of abuse.

In my own experience there were times when my woman would act erratically – especially when she had not have sex for a week or two. Always rough and hasty; until she gets the honey. Now, if I should act the same way when she is in that mood; all hell could probably break loose. So all i do is give her her tranquilizer and she is back to happy.

@4cars you realy wait a week or two to keep your woman sexually happy. What is wrong with you. She do right act erratic. 3 minutes a day is all it takes. You may need to cut your DNO time. Lol
