Man blames cocaine for stealing

High Court fineA repeat theft offender, who blames the use of cocaine for stealing from an elderly man and a supermarket, was sentenced to one years and six months behind bars.

David Telemacque, of Bowers Lane, pleaded guilty to stealing $1,000 in cash from 79-year-old, Herbert Boland, at Old Street, Roseau on July 18, 2014.

He appeared before a Roseau Magistrate’s Court on August 25, 2014.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing two bottles of Ponche Caribe costing $113.57 and two bottles of Johnny Walker Red Label valued at $161.91 from Miniya’s 7-11 Plus on August 17, 2014.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Valda Powell told the court that at about 9:45 am on July 18, Boland left his home to make a withdrawal of money at First Caribbean International Bank.

When he was done, he placed the money in his left front pocket and exited the bank.

Telemacque then approached him, shoved him against the wall, pushed his hand in the elderly man’s pocket and stole the money.

Boland immediately made a report at the Roseau Police Station.

Police encountered Telemacque in the cells at the Roseau Police Station after he was arrested for another matter on August 24, 2014.

He was informed of the report made against him concerning theft of $1,000 from Boland and he responded, “I really go in the bank but didn’t take money.”

Telemacque was then arrested on suspicion of theft.

The complainant, who was present at the police station at the time, identified Telemacque as the man who stole his money.

Telemacque was cautioned and he said, “Officer Pond, tell the prosecution to be lenient on me. I don’t know what is happening to me. The cocaine that doing that…”

On the matter of stealing from Miniya’s 7-11 Supermarket, it was revealed in court that Telemacque at 9:04 pm on August 17, went the alcoholic isle and took two bottles of Ponche Caribe. He placed one bottle in his pant’s pocket and held the other in his hand and exited the supermarket.

A few minutes later he went back inside the supermarket and took two bottles of Johnny Walker Red Label and again exited without paying.

The matter was then reported to the Roseau Police Station.

Once again Telemacque made the police’s job easy for he was at the the Roseau Police Station’s cell on August 23 when he was informed of the complaint against him.

“I have nothing to say about that,” he said.

When he appeared in court Telemacque said he really wants to change his life.

I am sorry about that…I can work to pay back because I just got a little job,” he said.

On stealing the Ponche Caribe, Telemacque said, “There was a Spanish woman outside the supermarket and she asked me to get the Ponche Caribe for her. I don’t know what is happening to me.”

Magistrate Bernard Pacquette told Telemacque he was worried that he was taking advantage of the elderly.

“What I am worried about is you taking advantage of an elderly person,” he said. “You were scoping him and saw he was putting the money in his pocket…you are younger and much stronger than him. That mentality is dangerous to our senior citizens.”

For ‘taking advantage of an elderly’ he was sentenced to one year at hard labour to run consecutively with six months hard labour for stealing alcohol at Miniya’s 7-11 Plus.

Last year Telemacque was sentenced to eight months in prison for theft.

The $1,000 nor alcoholic items mentioned were not recovered.

Another chronic thief who cannot help himself from stealing. The man is fortunate that he was not injured. He could easily have been killed and for one his age.
If his head had a lot of cocaine, he would not have been able to stand on his two feet. I think he lied about this one. He probably had some but not enough since he was able to go about stealing.
He needs rehabilitation. If he wants to change, he should be advised to first turn to Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Healer of all our ills. This is where he should start first.

Mr. Boland I am so happy that they caught the thief that did that to you. A lot of persons who know you were very disturbed when we heard about the theft. Its sad though that you will not get back your monies. But at least a little satisfaction to know he has been apprehended and jailed. Justice served!
