Man charged for murder of elderly

Thirty-three-year-old Clement Labassiere has been charged for the murder of 74-year-old Ambrose Leblanc of Vielle Case.

Labassiere allegedly hit Leblanc with a stone on the head on February 16 and inflicted an injury which is believed to have caused his death three days later.

The defendant was remanded at the state prison and will appear for a preliminary inquiry in May.

Labassiere was one of several prisoners who had successfully appealed sentences handed down by Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin last April at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal.

He had walked out a free man after being incarcerated for 10 months on a number of charges including assault and battery.

Labassiere had faced charges of threats, throwing missiles, battery and five charges of assault was sentenced to a total of 27 months jail in 2009. However, according to the Court of Appeal the defendant should have spent lesser jail time.

The Justices of Appeal said that the accumulative sentence for the five assault charges were not to have exceeded six months jail time, but went up to 15 months over that amount.

It was ruled that his sentence had been spent and he was released.

So, it looks like people will settle their differences by killing one another? and just roaming the streets, as if it is the right thing to do, people steal and they get stiffer punishment than murderers and rapist .
To me the laws are not stiff in Dominica, what for the police and the Magistrates to see, they do not see, but want to harass people for petty nonsense. Also, I find the policemen in Dominica, do not patrol the streets at night, when you call them for a complaint they never come, and always have an excuse, but when a crime is committed, see how fast they arrive and want to handcuff you. To make ” a long story short” they need to be more concerned about Dominicans and their well being. Dominica used to be such a peaceful and quiet nation, now, it is very scary. Hope they introduce the capital punishment, so people could keep their a.. quiet, and also more employment for the youth.

    Thanks.

my sympathy goes out to the Leblanc family. Am sorry about what he did but we cannot go back. Ours prayers go out to all of you . By clement being in jail i hope he will have a time to thing about what he has done. It hurts to see that a young man has wasted his life doing nonesence. Justice will prevail and hopefully by the decision that is made everyone will be satisfied. We love him even if he has done wrong. Please don’t take it out on his family in the village. clement is old enough to know right from wrong. we cannot put the blame on other people for what clement did. May Mr Leblanc soul rest in peace.

I agree, Ambrose was a quiet man. I did not know him to be in any trouble. If anything, Clement should be close to him and his children. What happen to families today?

I have no body else to blame than the court system they went all out to destroy Tiyani Behanzin and in the process caused the crime to happen kk was rigthfully sentenced for throwing alkali in a school bus causing grivious bodily harm to school children in uniform so how could Ola Mae Edwards use section 88 of the magisterial code of procedure to let that monster go so they are responsible i hope he rotten in Jail so that Mr Wilson Brumant a hard working farmer can have peace this man has been tormented by kk and was afraid to go to his farm because kk throw stones at him up to last week so now Mr,wilson can safely go to his garden again i hope those Magistrates take note and stop loosing criminals on our streets and communities.By the was Skerrit has nothing to do with that.that is just a devil on the loose and that is why i am asking for capital punishment for killers the Bible say whoso sheddeth mand blood by man shall his blood be sheed i hope some greedy lawyer dont come and cause him to go free to kill again. So now i know that Tiyani Behanzin was right and the court of appeal was wrong.we should ban amnesty international ban the court of appeal, ban the murcy commitee and bring back TIYANI to the bench with haste.

Well said Y J J. No one should be afraid of walking out their door. No one should be afraid of going to their garden. Anyone who feel they are bigger than others and want to be bad, should remain where they belong. Dominica do not have a fair justice system anyway. You KILL a person to remain BEHIND BARS. You should not be allowed to roam the streets to commit any more crimes. I know a person that spent 15 years in jail for molestation and a person that kills walks after a few months.

“Wesley”: Please be kind and sympathetic. Seraphine is grieving the loss of her father and your focus is on her spelling. In my opinion you need a lesson in writing proper sentences. Rather than criticize someone’s spelling, make sure your criticism sentence flows.

Ms. Leblanc: Please accept my deepest sympathy and apology for critism by fellow readers and writers. God Bless.

For God’s sake everything cannot be skerro? Something bigger is wrong with those who can only see in just the corner of their eye. I s skerro the high court of justice or the magistrate? I would like to know who was on the news paper in the justice system speaking about Tiyani for the world to read…Skero. Lets get serious and speak to parents, reach out to those fathers/mothers who care less about their children. The home is where the trouble starts. Help a neighbour, a friend, a young man or girl to do better. Just look at ourselves and see whether we are role modles then point the 20 fingers at Skerro…think………..!

Do you see the wisdom of capital punishment in Islam? If this guy was kept in prison, this old man would have been alive.

When capital punishment is applied, it curbs crimes in a society.
