A man has been charged in relation to an accident in Antrim last year which claimed the life of a British citizen who was visiting Dominica.
Investigations into the matter are now complete and on Wednesday, May 15, 2017, Trevor Alfred of Marigot was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, police PRO Pellam Jno Baptiste said.
He was taken to a Magistrate Court in Roseau where the charge was read to him.
He was granted bail in the sum of $EC25,000 and the matter is carded for June 14, 2017.
British national, Tina Monk died in the accident which took place at about 1:00 pm on November 9, 2016. She was visiting Dominica on P&O Cruises.
The accident was the result of a collision between a vehicle driven by Alfred and a tour guide bus driven by Jeffrey Gregory of Grand Bay.
At the time of the accident, which was widely reported in the British press, the police said a total of 13 casualties were transported to hospital; ten of them were non-nationals.
Six of the injured were admitted while six were discharged with minor injuries.
The vehicles involved were extensively damaged.
My sister Julie Tina monk, was the person who died in this horrific accident, nearly 4 years down the line we are still waiting for Trevor Alfred who killed my sister to be sentenced . I will not give up on this until we have justice for my sister
Why did it take so long to charge him?
only with robbie as minister of tourism we see in one year two tourist lost their lives. robbie is the worst minister of tourism ever in Dominica. certify all grandbay man as taxi drivers. you know how reckless they drive.
I agree, what about the guy who was murdered by the police in Portsmouth, they kill him like they kill Steven Biko in south Africa , no body is talking about it as if he was a dog , what about his family why are they not making a fuss about his murder, where is justice for the poor? justice suppose to be blind .
I think it’s time to start reviewing the types of vehicles that carry passengers on the island. These mini buses are a death trap, especially in front-end collision. With the engine placed underneath the driver’s seat that leaves a flat front that can be easily penetrated during these types of accidents. I recall a similar one in Salisbury a few decades ago that included several the deaths of several medical students.
There also needs to be more police officers patrolling these roads. I thought the point of these motorcycles from China was to effect change and help police officers to carry out their duties more efficiently and more effectively or are police officers still using these bikes to run their own business as usual.
So unfortunate. Reckless is not even the word to describe this man. May she RIP and may her family find comfort, they maybe still haven’t come to terms with this terrible ordeal.
Did he not flee the scene of the incident as well? Was this the sole charge read to him? C’mon my people, do better! These things are taken too lightly.
How he could flee the scene when he was transported to the hospital
As a Dominican born British national, I am appalled by the standard of driving in Dominica. In view of the increase of motor vehicles on sometimes poorly maintained roads, I suspect many drivers do not have driving licenses, know very little about road craft or driving etiquette. On my visits to Dominica, I always have a hired car which i use to go all around the Island and on many occasions, it is only my skill and awareness that has prevented accidents. The Government needs to create a Dept of Transport to ensure the improvement of roads and better driving around the Island.
‘ oh so London pad ne accident . and we have department for transport . it’s called traffic division. these things happen all over. it’s unfortunate when it’s happens but it could happen anywhere in the world.
That’s how U Dominicans like it, hear UR. COMMENTS D/ca can never change not in UR. life time
Your comment is rubbish that how u all behave .. No one should comments if they dhe some wrong in Dominice. Go abroad and be broad minded. When I lived von Dominica I was ignorant like you. .
Vehicles, including taxis and buses, still overtake at blind corners on this section of road.
Along the approaching straight stretch – a tempting place for overtaking – there is a deep pothole that causes vehicles to swerve to the center of the road. It has been there since Erica.
Some drivers never learn from those accidents. These think they will never get into an accident. We do know, when they least expect, it takes less than a second for an accident to occur.
his bail too too low!!
No one is above the Law. Good to see that justice is being served. However, the guy who died in the hands of Police in Possi yet to get justice. Are we waiting for people to completely forget as time pass by and emotions lost to stop the case. The police is not above the law. The guy who died was basically sentence to death without due process. Police skipped the courts determine guilty and handed the death penalty in one night.
How does this matter come up from this story. Is that the only mater tat as not been heard in the Courts we hearing cases not that were field six years ago, any comments ion them and they did not involved police as defendants. All defendants have a right to a defense and when the day comes the jury will decide their fate not you in this medium.
