Man dead in Grandbay shooting incident; police officer assisting in investigation

shootingA Corporal of Police is assisting with the investigation of a shooting incident which left one man dead in Grandbay on Sunday 24, January 2016.

It is reported that Craig Thomas, of Highland in Grandbay, was shot while attacking the police officer.

According to reports from Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sergeant Pellam Jno Baptiste, Thomas sustained a gun shot wound to his left upper thigh about 11:15 am during the incident.

“It is alleged that Craig Thomas trespassed on the private property of a serving member of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force who resides in Grandbay and began damaging a motor vehicle owned by the Police officer,” Jno Baptiste said. “The police officer came out of his house armed with his firearm and was attacked by Thomas who was armed with a knife.”

He explained further that Thomas was transported to the Grandbay Health Centre where he was attended to, but later succumbed to his injury.

He was officially pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

A post-mortem will be convened.

Jno Baptiste said the investigation into th matter is being done by a police officer holding the office of Assistant Superintendent.

Why? 78 ,87,and 93 year old helpless ladies got attack, and if they could defend themselves you all would be making the same comments. Respect for one another that includes property also.

Its time that people stop thinking that they can tresspass on other peoples property, damage their property and still attemnpt to kill them or thei families for no reason and escape.

This is nonsense. My only concern is was this man insane or normal to have attacked the police. If he was normal then let him TAKE what he got. The court should allow the police officer to go free and do his work as normal. Transfer him to somewhere else or have him work at headquarters for his own security.

Mr Carbon DO NOT allow people to do the police what they want or dictate to you how you do your work Sir. When the police are wrong they are wrong but when they have to stand up to defend themselves let then stand sir and give them your full support

If this story is true – and officer, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt – The officer did what most of us are prepared to do if faced with the same predicament – we will defend our property and our selves and our loved ones. The criminals and the paroes, the madmen, all of them are getting very forward and seem to think that they have a right to take whatever they want and do whatever they want and violate whoever, whatever, where ever. Well, no – it doesn’t work so. We have to stand our ground.

Thank you officer, for showing them what can happen when we, the victims of crime, stand our ground.

There were two ‘crazzies’ (one male, one female) running wild in Portsmouth on Sunday The man kept picking up bottles and threatening people. There were quite a few police officers around, but not one of them tried to stop either of those persons. Thankfully, they did not get into a physical confrontation. The way they were behaving, we could have easily been reading a different story today.

We need to take better care of our mentally challenged.

If something like this happened in the USA where I live, Pellam would not come with this 2×4 story. First thing that would happen is, 1. The officer in question would be suspended forth with. 2. Not Pellam, but the commissioner would have a press conference to brief the press and answer questions. 3. The name of the investigating officer would be revealed and he too would face the press.

Pellam’s report has already compromised the nature of the crime and the investigation, and I would have to add my name to the list of fools, to believe this story. Pellam has already painted a very biased picture of his personal investigation and I do not expect anything to change as long as the lone shooter is the one assisting the police.

For the sake of justice, the name of the officer should be revealed by now since it is not an alleged story as Pellam stated. How could it be alleged when pellam tells us everything the officer did? Also, we need to know the name of the investigating…

I am not a politician and I will not put any political spin here. I do not know the political affiliation of the police officer that is now assisting the police with investigation. One thing, I realize some bloggers that support UWP are siding the police today, and that has me confused.

I voted UWP but I am nobody’s ite. I stand for justice and justice is not based on who does it. First of all, the story of Pellam does not add up. I don’t understand why a person, even if he is mad would go trespass the property of a known officer, begin to attack his car in broad day while the officer was in the house; saw the officer come outside with his gun, and for the diseased, knowing all he has is a knife, yet began to attack the officer with his knife. No add up sorry?

Why did he chose to go after the officer? Was the officer owing him? Did he work for the officer? was he treated unfairly by the officer? Were they in an argument that turned soar? There is more to the story.

I hope when you all find out who this Police Officer is, you will stick to your negative comments. Is it first time that a man is shot on private property? No. The mere fact the property was a Police Officer’s, then he should agree that the guy damage his vehicle then stand there for him to cut him with a knife? Please people!!!! A police officer is a human being and has a right to react.

  22. Numan
    January 25, 2016

Dominicans need to take it easy. I am not a police officer but witnessed a guy charge a Police officer with a cutlass in Summer 2014. The officer tried to defend himself and shot at the guy at point blank range three times. He sustained only a minor graze to his elbow. He was making noise that he was not going back to jail. The guy was caught and spent less than 2 years in jail. He was recently arrested for brutally attacking someone else in a bar in the last few weeks.

Now tell me if the officer had kill him, while defending himself would he have been able to attack somebody else brutally with a cutlass? IMO if you are committing a crime and have any weapon on you, that is attempted murder straight. You are asking to be put down plain & simple.

As for the health system, the story did not report how long it took for him to be transported to the health facility. Additionally it did not mention if he got any assistance when shot at the scene. All these are critical to know why he…

Good job of reporting Pellam! For that soon you will be promoted to Assistant Commissioner and the Corporal that is assisting the police with the investigation will be promoted to Commissioner. Carbon better come up with a false story if he wants to keep his job. That’s the norm, that’s the standard in Dominica these days. Having said that, I will say kudos to the officer for sending the assailant to his rightful place IF the explanation thus far is correct. You cannot go into the yard of a police officer (or anybody for that matter), damage his property and even have the gall to attack him with a knife when he came out. Oh no no no no! The only thing I blame the officer for is being too nice by shooting the assailant in his thigh instead of his head or upper torso  . Who is helping with the investigation? A police officer?
Jno Baptiste said the investigation into th matter is being done by a police officer holding the office of Assistant Superintendent? Really pellam? Why is he anonymous? Can people trust any senior or none senior member of the Skerrit police force to conduct any fair investigation? Here is why we can’t trust you guys: The commissioner was hand picked exclusively to protect the interest of Skerrit. So Skerrit has to protect him too. The assistant must protect Skerrit Skerrit because that’s the only way he gets promoted. The PRO is there to protect Skerrit and his interests. Blackmoore’s job is to protect Skerrit; the president’s job is to protect Skerrit and must officers know they are their to protect Skerrit. So Skerrit is bound to protect them through Cabon because they know if they don’t protect their friends the ballon will burst. Like in the attempted murder of GON Mano, the Portsmouth killing, expect more of d same

@kid on the block, simply because he has set the standard. No doctor can help a sick patient without dealing with the cause of the problem. All the crimes that are taking place in Dominica today is as a result of the lies and corruption of Skerrit. Though Skerrit might not be the subject matter, he is the cause of the fall because the system is one built to protect Skerrit and as a result, criminals feel and know Skerrit will protect them, when and if they are at fault. As for the police, they know Skerrit / Carbon will never go all out to conduct a fair investigation, to ensure the rule of law prevails. Furthermore, he doesn’t want the police to open a can of worms cause he knows it will smell

There is nothing wrong in saying a police officer is helping the police in their investigation. That is a legal term; anytime someone murder, or commit any crime as long as the police are talking to the suspect, or one who reported a crime can be termed as someone assisting the police with their investigation!

The shooter in this case just happened to be a police officer, therefore any evidence he gives is construed for the moment as assisting the police. Now if it gets to a point where the police has grounds to arrest him for murder, or manslaughter, they have to immediately read him his rights, ending by saying you have the right to remain silent, otherwise anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.

So, to the little went sick half dead yellow belly rat, who contends I goggle counter me on what I said, go and goggle and come again, you damn idiot, everybody is not on the same level, you are beneath me, just read me and shut up; my computer did not make me…

Taking a life is not a joke as it seem. I’m glad I’m not the killer/shooter. Later in life the killer may be tormented by his inward thoughts. I like to warn people and follow peace. I’ve had bad things happen to me by others – Had I not been the person that I am; I would have killed a few people. But I let a lot of things slide. I’m at peace with myself. Also, when I leave my persecutors alone, I usually find out later they found themselves in more trouble. Thus, my hands remain clean. Anybody could be bad. Badness is not something some can afford and others can’t. However, some people prefer to maintain peace.

a gun is for ones protection not to kill another especially when the other was only carrying a knife life is just too cheap in Dominica.

Did you not read the article that he came at the police, on his property with a knife? You expected the police to say to him, you are doing well, stab me with the knife you have in your hand.

A knife is deadlier than a gun at close proximity the time it takes u to unholster the weapon and click off the saftey then aim and pull the trigger the knife already in ur chest. The officer wud be well stupid to get stab up in his own yard

Have to say I feel sorry for him but he was not fully mentally stable an thats not the 1st time his done those things if only he would listen to me when growing up all now he would be alive all I could do as his cousin was talk to him but everyone chooses his own path of life

    • January 25, 2016

You said he was not fully mentally stable, when someone is not mentally stable they do the wrong things ,in other words they might not know the wrong from the right,,so why do you think that if he was obeying you he would be alive? do you think that someone who is mentally challenged knows what it is to obey or not,,,i guess i missed the point or maybe you are getting mixed up>

    January 25, 2016

“Thomas sustained a bullet wound to his left upper thigh about 11:15 am during the incident.”

I have a problem with that statement above: The thigh is the portion of the leg above the knee; the femur. I do not see why someone getting shot in that part of the body should cause their death, unless he was allowed to bleed to death!

And for that to happen the bullet would have severed (cut through) the femoral artery; in any event if that is the case, some real doctor could have stop the bleeding; so here again I suspect he may lost his life due to the incompetence of some quack!

Something is fishy about this, how much damage can one do to a motor vehicle with a knife beside cutting some lines into the paint, which we term keying in America; that is when somebody park to close to you and one can’t get into their vehicle, they get angry, and use their key to cut a long line into the offenders car.

        January 25, 2016

You see how dumb, and stupid you are? There is no place in the commentary DNO or anyone identified the cause of his death. I am the one who suggest the bullet may have severed his Femoral Artery, hence he bleed to death. If you want to run with what I said fell free to do so; at least you can say you learnt something me, otherwise shut up!

Okay, since you know so much, write your name so that you can be identified as an idiot if you answer the following question. I could have said his femoral vein, or his great saphenous vein, or popliteal vein, since you are so smart, explain to me an idiot; how those are related to each other and the femoral artery, and to what major organ of the body they are associated with, show me your smarts, unless you can do that take a hike, and just shut up: just shut up!

sh… alone you can talk. I really thought that Francisco the google king would know more about the injury

    • January 25, 2016

This artery is the largest in the human body ,you do not have to cut someone through to cause their death. As long as this big vein above the knee is cut the best thing to do is tie ABOVE the cut or injury and do a “garot”
when you do a garot ,you tie first ,then push a stick underneath ,then hold the stick by both ends and turn as most as you can to stop the bleeding,,,none the less why should a police use a gun on a man with a knife, where did he get his training from?this police had one goal and he reached his goal, but he must remember that the sea shore is not far for any one..

These days is police assisting police in shooting investigation in Labor potato garden. First it was in Portsmouth killing and now is in Grandbay. This follows the mysterious death of Late PM Rosie, of Portsmouth and then late PM Pierro, of Grandbay. I wonder where next, and who next these police will assist police to investigate

    • January 25, 2016

We all know where next since we wondering why the police snippers have to be in our yard in Salsbury, what they looking for in Salisbury all of a sudden we are being terrorize by Skerrit Police Force, people need to talk so that the outside eorld know what taking place in Dominica by the police in Dominica, what the police is saying just don’t add up, you went outside armed with your gun to kill the guy, this dominica police force need a complete make over from the head down to the toes, why didn’t the police call his colleagues in the grand bay station for assistance, he handle the situation by himself, the guy is dead it’s his words against the dead guy, there’s two side to a story and the police story is very fishy, personal what the police is saying lacking substance period

The absolute first thing that comes to mind is this, was this police officer on duty, secondly if he was not, does the police regulations allow you to carry issued firearm home with you after duty?

A police is a police. How would you like if someone is trying to kill you and that police officer was off duty? Should he not shoot or try stopping the killer because he is off duty? Am sure you would be begging for him to help you. We come on here and try to be politically correct.

    • SMH
      January 25, 2016

what are you getting at, on or off duty. the police is automatically on duty if an offence is committed in his or her view, what is trespassing? what is malicious damage? what is armed with an offensive weapon? and next question is…you the writer can be the holder of a fire arm licence, what makes you think that a police officer cannot be the same. ponder on this…

    • Informed
      January 25, 2016

Hmmm, If not the regulations need to be revised. The police automatically assumed duty when something warrants his intervention to act. He is never detailed “home duty” but when you call him to attend to an incident in the neighbourhood, perhaps a life threatening one too, he is still a police officer and without the necessary tools for the job he is handicapped. I might see a different post from you. It is rather unfortunate that the injury was fatal and my prayers go the the family of the deceased and also to the police officer who may be traumatize and would need support.

Maybe he did shoot to kill, and missed  The officer had every right to defend himself. The story did not indicate whether or the police dude used his private firearm or GOV issued one…Stop hanging the guy before knowing full details. • Face the Facts
        January 25, 2016

I would think part of the police training is, if attacked, they are to shoot not to kill, even if it is a thief who is running away. You aim for the legs to make the thief freeze and stop.
They are to shoot at the legs in order to prevent the perpetrator from running away. I have known this since a child. Either way, when they aim, if fatal, it could be a missed bullet.
We know, as we read, in this case the police shot his thighs. This was not to kill or meant to kill him. It would have frightened the man and from approaching the police and harming him.
