Man dies in bid to escape police

Police PRO Kenth Matthew has reported the death of a 39-year-old man from a southern community who died while attempting a daring escape from police.

The police have identified the man as Alvin Liverpool of Grand Coulibri who they said jumped into a precipice in his bid to escape them.

Matthew stated, “On the afternoon of Wednesday October 12, 2011, a police patrol came upon a sizable marijuana field in the Grand Coulibri area, when their sudden appearance surprised a man, 39-year-old Alvin Liverpool of Grand Coulibri, who was in that field then. Liverpool promptly ran away and jumped [down] a 150-200 foot precipice, in an effort to evade the Police. Officers familiar with that area feared the worst, that is to say, they believed that Liverpool, by using that mode of escape, may have caused himself grave injury.”

A search was subsequently mounted for Liverpool by the unit on patrol and other police officers. The mangled body of Liverpool was eventually found and moved to the Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 3 am on Thursday.

Matthew also reported that investigations into the circumstances surrounding Liverpool’s death have begun.

I leave a leave a response when I especially enjoy a post on a website or I have something to contribute to the discussion.

It is caused by the fire communicated in the article I looked at.

I was actually moved enough to post a thought ;) I do have a few questions for you if you don’t mind. Is it simply me or do a few of the remarks appear like written by brain dead individuals? :-P And, if you are posting on additional online social sites, I would like to keep up with you. This incident has definitely raised loads of comments, reflecting its importance to readers of this forum. I would imagine that they reflect feelings of society in general. I think that readers are generally perceptive enough to see who has a motive based on the slant of their comments. I just felt like putting my own observations.
    1. If it was a big plantation and the deceased was somewhat overweight AND the area is rough terrain we c an assume that he was not alone. It seems obvious that the more more mobile members of the team were able to flee.
    2. The deceased gentleman MUST have known that he could never have outrun the boys in uniform.
    3. He was unarmed at that point as we would already have heard about it.
    4. Falling down a ravine seems an unlikely reaction as it does not make sense.
    5. The comments here and clearly from the girlfriend of the, but it seems the body was riddled with bullets including at least one in the head!

One of the comments said that the cops may have shot him from running. A shot in the head would definitely accomplish that goal. But is this how we want or expect our police force to act in dealing with citizens.

Are you going to believe that the whole squad could not apprehend the deceased without such deadly force. Then we come back to the leader of the squad and from the thread of many comments is maybe the biggest red flag in the whole scenario.

From my own investigations it appears that it was a rather small plantation with more sorrel than marijuana plants. ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF DOMINICA, MARIJUANA IS AN ILLEGAL DRUG.

I will continue to keep an open mind unlike some who are lop-sided as if they have personal interests, and hope that the investigations are carried out fairly to reveal the truth. The officers involved will answer to the lawyers when the time comes. Its only a matter of time. Let’s just be patient.

Well, I want to offer my condolences to this man family. We must wait and see what is the finding of the internal investigation which is being conducted by the Police Department. I am sure Dominica Police Department has an Internal Affairs Bureau or an Office of Professional responsibilities who will be investigating this incident. It’s my understanding that four shot’s were fired but if the man is unarmed and running away from the Police then why fire four shots at him. The police is allowed to use deadly physical force only if deadly force is being used or threathened to be used against them. An Officer cannot used deadly force against someone who is running away and posed no threat to them. Also when an autopsy is performed they will be able tell if this man died from a bullet wound, if he died prior to falling over the precipice or if he died from injuries he sustained after he fell over the precipice. As someone who participated into over one thousand homicide investigations and spent three and a half years in Internal Affairs Bureau of NYPD and also three years on a Police Involved shooting team which investigated every Police involved shooting in Brooklyn. I can say with centaintity that once an impartial investigation is conducted. The final disposition is usually differant from what the Police Department spokesman say. It is also my understanding that one of the Officer involved in this incident has a prior history. I think for the best interest of the Police Department and to build citizens confidence this Officer should by placed on modify assignment until this internal investigation is completed.

as a young man in Dominica, I am encouraging my brothers to stay away from drugs, when you are involved in drugs and you die in that life, to most Dominicans there should be no investigation into your cause of death……its almost like an animal that get hit by a bus… brothers, if you want your children to know your cause of death. stay away from the drug life….otherwise when you die everybody will look the other way and say “oh well, is drugs he was dealing so we dont need to know the circumstances around his death…..please read and listen to the comments that are being made…and stay away from the drug life.

What executive command are you? None at all! I did not take it personally per se. I am interested in Law, Order and Justice and all for it which is beneficial to Dominica and its nationals, also in not accusing anyone as the Police in killing the man as some of these Users/Readers have stipulated.
There are some of you who are not fair and just, who misconstrue what people state and do not put on your thinking cap and think rationally. I hope this assists your inquiring mind and sets it at rest.

Someone died and gave truth and justice the Moral Compass. That person seem to be trying to show that he/she holds higher morals than anyone else.

Get down from your high unicorn, and look at the reality we live in. There is two side to a story, police are sometimes bigger criminals than the ordinary man.

To be a fair thinking person one has to be in the middle and analyse facts from both sides.

The facts here are one sided.

Call a spade a spade. I stand up for what is right to do and say.
You are the one who is spewing hatred and making statements that you know nothing about. They are all insinuations and tell a lot about you, who you are and what is imbedded in your heart and mind. I conclude that I do not expect any better from you.
I do think that you do not think properly. If you read the lines and between the lines you would know that I do not condemn anyone and I do not hate. The type of mind which you possess will cause you to make such unfair and untruth statements. I merely commented about what they stated, much of which “some of them” state is negative and unfair. I am informing you this all depends on their mentality.
There are too many negative people who do not utilize their basic common sense. They condemn the Police and other people. They were not present when the man tried to escape. Therefore they are in no position to state that the Police killed him. This is accusing, demeaning and defaming the character of the Police. They have absolutely no right to do this. Yes! They could be charged. As adults they should think twice before they comment. How would they like to be accused of what which they may not be responsible for?
Their comments are also irrelevant to this article. If you note some of them who wrote positively got thumbs down. I ask myself what type of people are they who cannot see the truth of the matter and the light.
You know what this article is all about. It also has nothing to do with the PM or his Party or administration. They must stick to the issue. If you took a closer look at their writing and possess common sense you will comprehend what I stated.
You need to pray to God for discernment and enlightenment.
BE FAIR AND JUST AND COMMENT FAIRLY!   People as you are bringing down the prestige of this Website.
Those as yourself who are negative are unhappy and miserable people.

I have a great life. Do you have one? What is yours like? Are you happy? Cease being negative and bringing down your Police Force and criticizing those who stand up for the truth. Every one of them is not one and the same. If you were not present when the Police approached the man, you should not make a derogatory comment about them. It is people like you who bring down your very own country and inhibit its progress. What people as you write tell a lot about you. Note that I did not condemn the perpetrator who ran away from the Police and into a precipice.
I should know that the world consists of every type of people with all sorts of minds. We are not one and the same. We do not think alike. Some are negative people and others are positive ones. Some are sensible and utilize their good judgment according to their mentality and others do not; it is as if they do not possess any. Some uplift others and some do not. People’s writing tell a lot about them and what is imbedded in their mind. Surely those negative Dominicans, wherever they may reside, should be smarter than that.
Give people the rightful privilege of commenting just as you expect of others.

I don’t condone any form of illegal and evil activity. The young men and women of the South must find legitimate ways of earning an honest living. The men is involved in drugs especially cocaine destroying the youth of the community and preying on the young vulnerable girls giving them children in misery and in turn the women gets involved in prostitution for survival, this southern community is in a mess,it needs a spiritual cleansing. As regards the police they are a bunch of evil men and i will not let anything pass them. They sit at the station playing dominoe and consume alcohol and sometimes go on duty under the influence of drunkeness and shooting someone is a joke for them. When the police force can have a police who is supposed to be charged and arrested on a panel discussion what can we expect? The way things are now with the justice system we the citizens will have to do justice ourselves especially when we are violated by those who are suppose to execute justice and this includes those in power and the police. The time will come when the citizen, the government and the police will be physically at war.

Ok, marijuana is weed that grows naturally and has been around for centuries. So what? It’s illegal in DA. If you want that changed, stop crying on DNO, learn the legislative system, and sponsor a bill to legalize it. Our cops are corrupt? So what’s new? Where aren’t cops corrupt? Stop crying on DNO, get a hold of your pal rep or village citizens and do something about the rampant corruption! Grand Bay is a cesspool of illegal activity, so before Grand Bay people start crying on DNO about “woe is Grand Bay”, clean up your own community so others don’t have to keep coming there to do it for you. Grand Bay turns a blind eye to crime and then wants to shed crocodile tears when others do something about their criminal activity. Pluh….eeeee…ase….!!

There is not one country in the world that is immune from illegal drug activities. It is a grave and growing problem. This is why the government must do all it can to eradicate it for drugs kill. It is a disease which affects the brains, the memory and other parts of the body. I would not recommend it and not even for medicinal purposes. Some people use it to stabilize pain but it does more harm than good.

Now just watch Dominica police use their portion of that grant money to persecute marijuana in Dominica. They are profiting from the coke, fattening the crack dealers pockets and benefiting on the side. I know, I heard it directly from a millionaire coke.crack/dealer they can’t touch for years now.

hello hello hello.its very obvious that something is wrong here.information reaching me says the incident happened at one in the afternoon and thats big bright day.secondly four shots were fired, thirdly grandbay hospital was bypassed and they went straight to town.my question is if kent and the police is speaking the truth why it took so long to call for help?were they trying to cover their tracks?well if thats the case they did a very lousy job in covering it and am not surprised when i understood that A LUNATIC was heading the so called OPERATION.a word of caution to police u donot have to kill someone to get a PROMOTION.

If the law says marijuana is illegal then it is illegal. There is no getting away from that. However, I am of he opinion that the police are not doing their duty in the right way. Forced is to be used only when necessary. Were the gunshots necessary? I would like the officers involved to justify the gunshots fired. Four (4) to be precise. Why was it necessary? Was the man armed? One of the officers knew the individual by name. He did not have to be frightened with gunshots to the point of jumping over a precipice. Was it a deliberate attempt by one of the officers who has a track record of causing people to jump over cliffs to repeat the same thing again. What a shame, what a shame to repeat that same mistake again.

One of the things Fatso always said was that if he is on a plantation and pursued by police he would not run. He apparently knew the area very well. Why would he choose to run into a precipice? Someone has to convince me to believe that he chose to commit suicide. Could he have be led to run into the precipice. If you are blocked left, right, and back, you have no choice but to go the way that is free, “into the precipice.” What a gruesome way to die. Well, it’s only the police words. You are intelligent. I love yam, dasheen, etc. The thought of them make me hungry. These foods/vegetables are nutritious to the body and strengthen it. Drugs do not. They can make those who use them dotish. They only land people into trouble, illness and eventual early death.
A young man was killed on Thursday evening in Toronto. Last night or early morning another was killed. There are times there are more deaths in one week/weekend due to drug trafficking and affiliation with the wrong people. It is a cause for concern.
These young men were affiliated with drugs; they were known to the Police. Such a waste of God-given life.
I looked up the word “dotish” on the computer Research. The meaning is:
“Caribbean; considered to be lacking in intelligence or sense (insult).” This made me laugh. It is a West Indian word. I do not hear this word/have not heard it in the country/city I reside in. There are times I surprise myself and laugh too when I utilize words which I knew in Dominica.

If you are man enough to plant reefa, then be man enough to own up, and surrender when they catch you. That said, my condolences to his/my family in Bordeaux. I have not seen Alvin in a million years, but he is family. I am praying for all of you.

The article clearly says: “On the afternoon of Wednesday October 12, 2011, a police patrol came upon….”

Even though you don’t smoke it, neither do many of us, we know that marijuana is no danger to our society evidenced from over 40 years of it’s presence in D/a and Guadaloupe.

In fact, crack and the ineptness of the Gov’t to create employment is a greater danger. Also evidenced by so many youth who lost their lives going back door just to find employment.

He was not smart to try to evade the Police. How sad that he has gone to his eternal judgment in this manner. I wonder if God had mercy on his soul. I cannot help stating that according to my Catholic Christian teaching and belief, he will not enter Heaven in such a state. If God had mercy on his soul, it is in Purgatory being cleansed for whatever length of time it takes due to his frailties. You better believe it.
It is not our duty to judge or condemn him. We are not God.
If only people will live by the Law they would not get involved in this melee and subsequent death.
I reside in Toronto and through the years many of our young black men and a few older ones have died – too many and too young – through drug affiliation and trafficking. They are consistently warned to stay away from illegal drugs. Only on Thursday evening, the Media reported that a young man was murdered. It saddens me that young lives are snuffed out due to drugs. I ask the Lord to please put a hand to assist the youths to stay away from drugs and bad company, not only in Dominica but in the rest of the world.
Our God-give life is too precious for us not to enjoy this allotted time to live as long as the appointed length of our days in happiness, peace and harmony with health and strength.
Let us pray for the world but also for our youths, wherever we may reside.

Consider that when criminals try to run away from the Police, they will be shot at to prevent them from running. The intent is to catch them and not allow them to run away. Do the DA Police have Tasers? Then Tasers could be used.
Never come to a conclusion until you hear the result of the investigation. I do find that some of you think too little of the Police. It is time for a change of heart, manner of thinking and opinion.

Wondering if this happen to you sons daughter, step daughter ect what would you say, as we all know the level of crime in Toronto is worst than Dominica, what about all those who are and were wrongfully charged, killed by police in Canada/Toronto for crime they did not committed, when it reaches home we always sing another tune

boy justice where can someone run in dominica and not get caught at some point especailly if u already know who u looking for.Police knew who’s plantation it was so they know qho was running and how fast could a 300 hundred pound run anyway.Furthermore this guy knows the area better than anyone.and we will never hear the truth remember this is not the first time this has happened.1979 guy named johnny was smoking a joint and when he saw the squad he ran j….. shot him in his back killed him,it was covered up no one was ever charged.Police cannot shoot u because u run it’s unconstitutional.

      @ Bush Doctor

What type of Bush Doctor are you? I do not think that you want what is best for others and those who indulge in illegal drugs.
What can legalizing these drugs do for those who ingest them? What health benefit is to be derived from them? This is the question.
You should remain in the bush and never get out of it. You appear to be living in a world of fantasy. Face reality.
If these types of drugs are legalized I visualize that the world will be in a worst state than it is. It will be in a worst than alcoholics which is bad enough.
These people need JESUS! GIVE THEM JESUS! GO TO CHURCH, PRAY TO GOD, FOR THEMSELVES, FOR THEIR CHURCH AND COUNTRY, FOR THEIR FAMILY, FRIENDS, POLITICIANS, PASTORS AND THE ENTIRE WORLD IN GENERAL. They are living a wasted life – in futility – which will get them nowhere, not even to the heart and presence of God. This is the advice that they are in dire need of to practice godliness.

      • October 15, 2011

who said that mariguana should be illegal…….it is the slaveowners who realised that it was only through the use of the herb ….mariguans, lemon grass, sour sop,,,,etc the African can stand… the herb is his meat ..ordained by the Creator in the Holy Bible.

Just like an obessed man, food and mariguana must be used with discretion and not used to gather wealth AND BECOME DOTISH AND INARTICULATE.

It has several properities that could ensure a profitable manufacturing business for rope, paper, rope, cloth and seeds for nutrition.IT IS NOT A CRIMINAL DRUG. IT IS PART OF THE ALMIGHTY CREATION.

It seems like the agenda of the anti christ to always have us in a corner waiting for the dead food

But even that, it is because they cant control the profitability of ALL HERBS, they decide to halt and control every herb….

Remember some years ago, the propaganda against coconut oil caused a frenzy with the lies of this oil being loaded with cholestorol..it was a big, big lie….

They were promoting their engendered oils!!!!!

If the use of the herb is illegal why is the use of alcohol not illegal..?It is because they control the mode of production…thus the profits..

A man should not be treated as an animal if he is found with the herb.

One reseveration that is real is the over use and the greed.

What I suggest is ensure every man his right to live, work and shelter in an organised way and dont leave poor men on their own devise and then chase them as rats,

Social science is not to show knowledge but to implement programs that include everybody …
    dont marginalise the poor..

respect our history and place every man as the Creator expects us to.
STOP OPERATING ACCORDING TO EVERY BECK AND CALL OF THE FORMER SLAVEOWNERS AND ENGAGE IN PROGRAMS THAT WILL REPAIR THE SEVERE DAMAGE THAT CAME UPON US AS A PEOPLE FOR FIVE HUNDRED YEARS AND GOING

BLACK PEOPLE WISE UP. IT IS NOT AS DIFFICULT AS THEY PROGRAM US TO THINK…….WALK A MILE

      @ target

You are off target. If you think that those drugs are good and healthy for consumption, think that through the years those people have viewed a way of taking advantage of them and of the system. Illegal drugs have proved dangerous. People have lost their families, homes, jobs and savings due to those drugs. Do you not hear the news and read about it?
They are grown for monetary value and to be either well-of or rich. They do not care whom they sell them to and who takes them, be they adolescents.
Anything taken in excess is dangerous. There is no moderation among those who grow them, who sell them and who take them. This is what makes them dangerous, just as those who drink liquor to excess. When are you going to utilize your basic common sense and good judgment if you have any? Those illegal drugs should never be legalized. They should also not be grown in view of the fact that they are money-making which will only benefit those who grow them and traffic in them. They will not benefit society. In other words, taxes will not be paid for the exorbitant sums of money which will be derived from selling them. The growers will never be honest about their sale. Worst of all, get this straight they are a danger to the health of society. We need to preserve life and our health and not destroy it. Illegal drugs destroy health. This is the first and foremost issue and concern.

We have to look at the big picture; yes it is hard for we Dominicans but that doesn’t mean we have to plant marijuana or traffic cocaine to survive. There are a lot of other things we can grow to make a good like instead of doing illegal things. The man was evading police and maybe he thought he would survive cause he knew the area but only God knew what would happen. Guess it was his time.

Dat story have plenty holes in it eh my people.Police again covering their behind. Why police have to fire shots behind an unarmed man running. They the police think people didn’t hear them shooting. Why did they bypass grandbay hospital with the body(certainly not protocol)Why the incident was never on news? Are the police hiding something (hell yes they are. This man’s death is on thier hands for sure.Bigger question is why police spending so much time patrolling our woods when they would be more usefull patrolling dominica waters?I think it would make more sense to prevent drugs from leaving or entering the island.(more patrol boats). To the gov od d/a what options have u given the youth so as to deterr them from the drug trade?(None)What is america giving dominica in exchange for this all out war on ganja which they have implimented?Funny how i can drive 3 miles from my house in the states andbuy marijuana legally yet still america pressuring these small islands to stamp out the cultivation of this same weed by threatening them with visa restrictions on its people.Maybe government should get more in exchange for this nonesense from america don’t u think.Mister pm how about asking america for better and more equipment to patrol our waters.I think that’s how america does it themselves, patrolling their waters by airplanes and boats.Something is very wrong here especially when it goes as far as firing on an unarmed man causing him to even jump in a ravine to save his life.(and end up loosing it)Shame on gov policies Shame on police for killing it’s own people(brother, sister cousin friend)for the white man for unwanted peanuts(used equipment usually trash in america and outdated).

The everyday police person is not trained in ‘search and rescue’. They do not carry with them special climbing gear. If they had attempted to rescue Mr Liverpool, we most likely be reading of more than one unfortunate death.

It is an illegal drug which was growing. Did you not read the article?
What do you know? America has not yet legalized marijuana in general.
Marijuana for medicinal purposes (so they say) is legalized. Yet, those who use them for this purpose are selling them and making a mint.
I read in a Toronto newspaper that those who purchase them on credit owe the government exorbitant sums of money that the government is considering eliminating this service.
This may be another reason why the government will not legalize marijuana and other such drugs.
I do think that our government is not intelligent in this respect so as to legalize them for medicinal purposes. This drug has never cured anyone or stabilized their pain and illness for long. They soon die of their illness.

that’s sad… i’m against the use of drugs.. i think if u do it then be prepared for the consequences… if u are a drug dealer and profitable at it.. have at least 1/2 a million dollars on the side specifically for bail and lawyer charges… then u won’t have to take such drastic measures like this man did… not that i’m trying to influence drug distribution but it’s better to have one change his path than ending up dying on the wrong path

U see, black men chasing after their own kind to uphold the legislature and laws of their oppressors? This man took his life rather than be caught…Can’t you see the only ones hurt and killed are us the descendants of the slaves and colonial system? For a plant? A plant? A plant? Human life is worthless, dogs and plants are treated with more respect. Usher in the war on drugs then, the bounty shall be fruitful….. Death and destruction….

      @ No reparations

Senseless comment. Do not make me laugh. Oh please, no more of this slave reparations. We have come a long way and far away from that. Let us not revert to those days of our ancestors who were not even our grandparents of all. Those of you who are younger, much less.
While history will remain, nevertheless let us advance.
The Law is the Law. It has nothing to do with oppression.
Keep taking your illegal drugs and see how far you will get in life and how you will end up. I urge you not to encourage it.

Good comment. Man dead since Wednesday and family not informed even after informing of missing brother. No mention was made of body found until days after. We only pay for what we do while we are alive. Time will indeed tell. The officers involved maybe do not have families. Better yet maybe they do not have a heart. While I do agree that the police must do their duty, according to a renowned calypsonian, “use force only when necessary.” Were the gunshots necessary? Time will tell. Time will tell. If they don’t carry their duties in the right/legal way, trust me it will affect them or their families sooner or later.

Is it coincidence that whenever people are claimed to have committed “so-called suicide” or running away from the police the same police office is involved? Think about this.

        @ blast me

Sensible comment, eh? Who are you referring to about employment and unemployment? In bygone years there was unemployment. I never heard of drug growing and trafficking then. In those days Dominica had petty criminals. Murders and the types of thefts which are committed were hardly ever heard of, once in 10 years or more. Ask yourself what has happened to some people of this era.
Those who want a stable job and adequate salary must educate themselves. This means to complete at least high school.
God help those who help themselves for the better.
