Man Gets Three Years of Hard Labour for Theft in Wake of Maria

A Portsmouth man has been jailed for three years of hard labour for theft in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

Calvin Francis, of Chances in Portsmouth, was intercepted by the police on September 20 driving a motor vehicle, owned by him, filled with goods belonging to the owners of Blue Sky Store.

Police PRO, Inspector Pellam Jno Baptiste reported that Francis was charged with theft and taken to the Magistrate Court in Portsmouth on October 27, where he was found guilty and sentenced.

Meanwhile, Royston George has been remanded at the state prison for allegedly stealing a 6,500 watts generator belonging to MH International.

He was also charged with battery of police, threats against the police and resisting arrest.

The matter against him will continue at the Portsmouth Magistrate Court on November 13.

Looting is nothing new, when these disasters accur, it happens all over the world, my problem is that, this mis-guided brother had no right whatsoever to load his vehicle with stolen goods, the magnitude he did, sympathy is limited in these kind of instances.” If yu takin a little somting, yu ent have to full your transport” Mis=guided Dominicans for you. Oh Yo YOI.

@Bob Denis – What you mean if he taking a little something he ain’t have to full his transport?

Wha happen? The definition for STEALING changed on the Tuesday morning after Maria or wha?

Since when is stealing defined or justified based on how much of somebody else thing you take without permission? So if I take a little bit of somebody else things and don’t full my transport, then that type of stealing is okay?

You see de kind of bold-faced nonsense some of all you in dat country sanctioning and justifying.

Post your address in DNO’s comment section for people to come by your home and TAKE a little something of yours without permission nuh.

This is a whole heap of CR*P. In ordinary times I would agree with sentencing a man to jail for stealing groceries. In the immediate aftermath of Maria it is heartbreaking to be sentenced for gathering groceries to feed your family…..release the guy I say.
And since when is the court system so efficient that a month after Maria it’s priority has to be sentencing poor people to jail for tiefing groceries. And the port is still full of relief food that cannot be distributed and the barrel that Calvin family send to him still stuck on the port. Cr*p I say.
Pehlam and the police stop bringing those types of cases to the courts you have bigger fish to fry.
In ordinary times I agree to separation of the judiciary and the state but now I implore the intervention of the PM, the president, the whoever to stop this cr*p.
Ultimately it was the responsibility of the state to protect that type of property in an emergency….he did not loot a car, tv, fridge bla bla, food mr or ms…

We must uphold the law …..

Can you eat Land leather. I suppose the gold and silver in Universal Elegance were used as makeshift ropes to save people from the river. And they used the sofas and fridges and televisions from Courts to barricade their houses in the event of theft? Everyone knew a storm a coming regardless of the magnitude. Everyone could have prepared but we were ALL too complacent and comfortable and far too secure. WE ALL took our relative stability for granted. What we should be concerned with is why only surnames like Francis can be implicated, but those who you certainly wouldn’t define as poor are sitting in an office somewhere right now. Maria didn’t discriminate but apparently we still are.

Good. A lot more people should be rounded up and thrown in prison. The authorities should send a clear message that looting is stealing and there are consequences for stealing.

If Skerrit is at least brought in for questioning that would justify the arrest and jail of looters. But if he continues to get a free pass to his accumulation of wealth then we are saying the rule of law is for a chosen few.

This one is something positive right? It is the bear foot man on the street so arresting him, charging him, and jailing him for stealing to survive is great news. But if we ask Prime Minister Skerrit to tell us about our passport money and who in the world has our passport, we are very negative and now is not the time for that because people dying, people hungry, people hopeless and all the other nonsense hypocrites come up with. I am not saying it is wrong to jail him but if it is ok for some to steal and become millionaire with no questions asked, why is it great news to jail a poor man that looted after a storm

Deal with all these vagabonds as they ought to be dealt with officers. Hunt them down like they ought to be hunted.

It have more of them still walking the streets who were stealing from business places in Roseau and Portsmouth. I say expand the prison buildings to make more space and lock up all of these male & female thieves who were stealing stuff after the hurricane.
