Man tells magistrate scissors is for cutting his “weed”

Forty-two year old Derrick Thomas of Fortune has told a Roseau magistrate that he only intended to cut “his weed” with a pair of scissors police found in his possession at Melvina’s Bar in Pointe Michel over the weekend.

Thomas was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and disorderly conduct when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

According to the police officer prosecuting the case, on January 28, at about 4 a.m. Thomas was involved in an altercation with several other individuals at Melvina’s when police warned him to keep the peace.

The court heard that despite several other warnings Thomas continued behaving disorderly.

He was subsequently arrested and searched.

The police say he was unable to provide a satisfactory reason for the pair of scissors found in his possession.

In court Thomas told the magistrate “That is for me to cut my weed.”

“That’s not helping you. I will pretend I did not hear that,” Magistrate Baptiste told the defendant in response.

“If you don’t have the social skills at 42 to go to a bar and socialize without ending up in trouble then don’t go,” Chief Magstrate Baptiste advised him.

“You’re almost 50… I hope to God that you don’t have any children if that is the example that you’re showing them… shame on you,” she stated.

Thomas was fined EC $1,000 on the count of possession of an offensive weapon and $800 for disorderly conduct.

He was told that failure to pay those fines by June 30 would result in him spending several months in jail (six months and five months to run concurrently).

Fellas need to smoke more Marijuana and less tobacco. De sissors is mainly to cuy high-leaf tobacco, then they mix a little bit of marijuana in. Reason many of them are so agressive, hence increased crime in de place.
LEGALIZE or decriminalize MARIJUANA and watch crime go down to level of the 1970’s when man smoked just Marijuana and feel NICE!

i am going to try to draw a conclusion as to how i see a to household item or rather a working tool become an offensive weapon,i know i am going to start something like a rash of comments,i do not mind because that is my intension, the feedbacks,a cutlass is a item sold in stores legally, its an out door tool,a knife is a household item also sold in stores,a scissors is a household item also sold in the stores, all legal,so my point is,if one is caught with legal tool and did not used it in an altercation, how does become an offensive weapon,if it’s a legal working tool, this case did not state that he used it, or draw it out to stab anybody, you might say he was drunk and not on his best behavour, and that was his intension that is understandable, but again that is only a suggestion of what comes next,so prevention is better than cure, but irrelevant of the fact,it was not drawn,so there is a lingering question, did he intended to used it, we assume in our judgements, that what it was, again this is only human rational, you this is how cases can be won technically with a good lawyer, okay again i am not defending the guy,i am only putting this technical formallity out there,to see how you guys feel about this.

i read a book in the Roseau library once …it was stories told by kids of Nazi parents…..most of them 99% of the interviewees said that their father was loving good fathers…..their father who went out killing Jews were good dads….charity begins at home…..some of the people who are upstanding citizens are terrible fathers and husbands
