More officers enlist into Dominica Police Force

Carrette

Thirty-eight new police recruits have been enlisted into the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force.

Eight female and thirty male officers effective June fifteen have been engaged in orientation activities at the Police Training School in Morne Bruce.

However, official training will begin on Monday June 20th, 2011.

Chief of Police, Cyrille Carrette, said that this addition to the police service brings the compliment of police officers to four hundred and eighty three (483).

He said that this continued injection of human resource into the service will enable the police force to have more officers man the streets.

“The crime fighting situation is not getting better; it is getting worse globally. We have to ensure that we have enough human resource and the attendant equipment to go along with the human resource to deal with the crime fighting efforts in the country.”

In recent years, the Government of Dominica has injected a significant amount of resources in the police force.

The Police Chief is encouraged by this trend.

“I have always said that without security there can be no stability. So, for any progress to be made in any country, security has to be taken seriously. I think it is a global phenomenon now where all governments have been increasing security. However, this government has paid particular interest really in security; security has not been placed on the backburner.”

The Chief of Police told GIS News that security has been given due attention by the Roosevelt Skerrit led Administration especially in the area of training.

“We have been given the necessary attention required. I can say that in 2009 and 2010, the Government always kept avenues open for training for police officers when training for other areas in the public service was put on hold due to budgetary constraints.”

The Police Chief says this has impacted positively on the morale of the police, and there has been a significant reduction in crime on the island.

Dominica should have a police force of no less than 5,000 to 8,000.

Wow! The police force in Dominica is very small, why is that so? In Grenada our force number over 1000 strong!! with 100+ SSU and a multitude of specialist Departments.. well different needs for different countries.

we living in a Police State. those police are not for the criminals.. they are for the forceful control of all citizens particularly
any dissenting citizens… when in dominican history has any crime been SOLVED and properly prosecuted by police.

What Carrette did’nt say,is that the so-called security is for the protection of Skerrit and his cohorts and not the P-E-O-P-L-E.Anyway glad the force is no longer “kendergarten”,but sorry the chief has’nt gone to a higher class himself.

You cant kill a tree by picking off all the leaves, new leaves will spring up. Same way u cant solve the problem of crime and violence by enrolling more officers, u have to tackle the root of the problem. Which is caused by lack of opportunities, lack of good jobs and lack of money in the populace purse. So put all the officers you guys want out on the street and crime will still keep rising, until u fix the contributing factors no progress will be made in fighting crime

It primarily includes lack of proper and responsible parenting. Nurturing commences from the moment they are young and able to comprehend.
If parents can truthfully state that “We have done our part” in proper and responsible parenting, then, we can blame other avenues.
Discipline, obedience, respect for others and society and their property begins at home, primarily from parents and family members.

I am sorry, HAIL mary full of it do not take this the wrong way Two decades ago the strength of the Dominica Police force was 490 and today in 2011 it is a megar 483 can some one explain that to me. Why? i will leave it to the people in charge to adress my question cause i do not want to be accused of injecting politics in every thing.Neverthless excuse the “pon” That is certainly not the next level? i hope I`m wrong. If there`s a need for the R.S.S in its true form station in Barbados for quick response to any location where trouble breaks out they will be around for a very long time I`m sorry. A perfect example of one step forward and five steps backwards. Having said that let me say congratulations to all our new recruits do your best but remember the smoke you say coming from Morne Bruce is not broth our cops are cooking so prepare your selves to understand what it takes to transition from civilian life to a para military life, many are called few are chosen there`s going to have a few faint hearted who will not be able to stand the heat coming from the kitchen. My prayers are with every one.

Do not cite issues like we do not want a police state,or the population has dwindle and all that stuff. I need hard facts to indicate to me and others why on Earth our Island is 289sq mls over 65Thousands people crimes is on the increase like no body`s business every jack***has a gun and dealing drugs{who the cap fits let them wear it} I could go on and on. But its laughable we only about to account for 483 police officers that makes up our police force and we do not have a standing Army?? God help us.

By the way Carrette, why is your head down in this picture. That indicates one of th following. You are reading your notes and oblivious to your audience, you don’t feel confident, you are not telling the truth, or you are guilty of something and your conscience is not with what you are saying, either way, it does not bode will for you.Next time we want to see those EYES!! They never lie, we can tell more from your eyes than your words.. Thank you very much!

By the way DNO, did someone or some persons ask you to pull of the article on the president, since the comments were not at all flattering? Just checking, if you say you are a bona fide media house you have a responsibility to your readers, not to sanction their opinion on anyone, no matter who it is. No one should be above scrutiny and criticism in our society when holding PUBLIC OFFICE!

    Mr commisoner,
Its good to see that people are being employed in Dominica. But the biggest trouble with what you have just said is that the police officers of the Island only serves the rich and famous, and the poor and needdy are being ignored by them. They are part of the one way crime reduction and will always remain this way.

so sad to see more police employed, they will be ineffective since they are had picked by skerrit. they will hustle my friends who smoke ganja and do nothing about the criminals who commit white color crime in the government circle, they will turn a blind eye to the people who traffic cocaine after receiving a salary from them, they will alert criminals when search warrant is about to be executed, they will lie in court against poor people’s children in order to get a conviction, woe beyond to us the people of dominica…. we are in trying times

Can’t wait until Dominica becomes a policed state like the rest of the “civilized” world. A camera and a cop on every corner, sounds like freedom and free speech is right around the corner.

Even better yet, I hope they start a war on drugs too so that 30,000 of our people may be killed in 2 years for no reason……(sarcasm)

I can’t believe how stupid Dominicans have become…

      @ stupes

You should not judge prematurely, complain and be critical. You and your parents and other elders should know the world is not what it was in bygone years. So is Dominica. Cameras may be necessary in time if crimes escalate. Consider 10, 20 years or more from now.
When I was a child, teenager and grew up to adulthood our doors were kept unlocked, even opened during the day and we slept with the windows opened. Sometimes the door was unlocked so that those of us who went out in the evening, partying :) or visiting family or friends, when we returned home we would just open the door and walk in. We had no fear of criminals entering. Many Dominicans can attest to their experience.
We hardly heard of a crime, a theft, vandalism, break and enter and murder. Not so today.
You should know that times have changed in that some people have changed as they became more godless and wicked.
Parents will have to do a better job of responsible parenting.
The government and schools will have to do something about it so that the youths will not resort to a life of crime.
Everyone is responsible for nurturing the youth to a certain extent commencing with parents.
Let me further inform you, you refer to yourself as stupes. You are a Dominican and you are calling Dominicans, generalizing, stupid? Are you sane or not? You fall in that category.

I wish thes new police men and women all the best but how can they do theirs effectively when they have to deal with Tony and Carrette maybe one of them will havw what it takes to arrest Tony, Charles, Alic,Skerri and all the others that are violating the Constitution

Oh please, what is your point? If you cannot state something good, state nothing at all. Have you dealt with these men previously? You are judging them. Some of you will never be satisfied. Such negative statements which make no sense whatsoever.

My best wishes for a successful career to the new Police Officers.
Some of you as Hogwash who comment (your comments are indeed hogwash) are too picky and love to criticize everything stated on this Website. Too much negativity. It could be depressing reading some of your comments.
What the Chief of Police meant is, crimes on the streets and elsewhere in the Nation as thefts, vandalism and murders have decreased. Thank God!
His words were not difficult to comprehend. As the saying, read between the lines.
Stick to the subject matter. Please do not bring anyone else’s name into it. This article has nothing to do with politics and other innuendos as you mentioned. It is uncalled for.
Offer your compliment and best wishes to the new Police Officers, also your prayers for them. God knows that they will need prayers specifically in these times.
