Shawn Florent of Good Hope, who is facing a charge of murder, will now serve four months in prison for breaching one of his bail conditions.

Florent appeared before Chief Magistrate Candia Carrette- George at a Roseau Magistrate’s Court on Friday 12, December 2014.

Florent was charged with the murder of Raymond “Lazo” Mingo in Castle Bruce and was bail.

According to information revealed by the court, Florent was charged with possession of cannabis amounting to 1,285 grams with intent to supply to another. He pleaded guilty to that charge.

The estimated street value of the illegal drugs is $2,800.

He was also charged with threat, battery and damaging a computer monitor at the police headquarters.

He pleaded not guilty to these charges.

Reports stated that police went to the home of Florent on December, 10 2014 when they discovered the cannabis.

Some of the cannabis was found hanging on a string inside the house, some on the floor and on a cloth in the bedroom.

When questioned by police, Florent responded, “You don’t know weed?”

When cautioned he said, “A little weed that there for me to smoke.”

Reading from a note in court Florent said he didn’t know cannabis was illegal.

He said also that he needed a job to take care of himself and without a job it will only result in more crime.

Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Laudat object to bail on the grounds that Florent had breached one of the bail conditions forbidding him from commiting offences while on bail.

Florent has been charged in connection with the death of Mingo in Castle Bruce in September 2011.

Reports are that Mingo got into an argument with a small group of men over his motor vehicle.

The argument escalated into a fight and Mingo was stabbed in back, neck and left side of the body.

Florent was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

The trial is set for March 4, 2015 at Castle Bruce.

Only in Dominica. Dominica is just to free. No law, no constitution. That’s why we needed a new Government.

DNO, I have been thinking about the man who murdered the Bertrand man (?) in Laudat. He was charged with murder and he was allowed to leave Dominica. He was supposed to return to D/Ca in September. Did he return? I cannot recall reading anything of that sort.
I did comment that he will not return to face the murder charge and that under no circumstances should he have been granted permission to leave Dominica.
I cannot comprehend that the authorities allowed him to leave Dominica. Something is wrong with those people.
I have never heard or read that an accused murderer would ever be allowed to leave the country. Only in Dominica you say? Is it any wonder that nationals do not have confidence in these authorities?

This was the eye opener for him to skip bail. I also commented on this when I heard that he was allowed to leave the country. Justice in DA is just inside out.

I hope he remains just where he is with no future bail.
He damaged the police computer and with the murder charge, he was bailed? This man has a weakness as if the devil is behind him and in front of him. He would always re-offend.
Be careful when you grant murderers of all bail. They are out in public. With their reputation, how could you ever expect them to stay out of trouble? They should be kept under surveillance.
Freedom is an invitation to re-offend. If it is not one type of offense it will be another. These people are not strong of spirit to avoid crimes. It would be better to keep them incarcerated.

Dominica has become a lawless island. Shouldn’t the magistrates uphold the law in the land? They should be blamed for letting murderers go free and then to commit more crimes. This is just too bad.

This man should be incascerated for the crime of murder. In the first instance, bail should have been denied, Could any one believe him when he said that he did not know cannabis was illegal . This was a dumb defense. Why is a court matter waiting so long before it goes to trial. I think that is just to frustrate the witnesses, in that they will loose interest, or may be migrate .

Give him Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Healer of all our ills.
Give him a Holy Bible to read/study. He needs bible and religious instructions.
He should go to Church when he gets his freedom. It looks like this will not be for a while, if never.
If he is a Catholic, give him the Holy Rosary. When people as he turn away from God this is what happens to them. They go from bad to worst.
You should also counsel him. If you cannot see him, write him. However, it appears rehabilitation may assist him.

The Preliminary Inquiry is set for 4th March and not the trial. Murder trials only take place in Roseau at the High Court.

Allu to slack in that country. He breeched the terms of his bail. The bail should be revoked and he should be locked up til his case call. End of story.

And don’t talk about since 2011 a murder case waiting to call and a man walking around free. The dead man done rot in his grave. Stuepse!! Slackness!!!

He must commit crime because these guys are tormented when they kill. The justice system is so slack, they are being bailed to cause more trouble. Just listen to his logic with no job more crimes will be committed, this guy has made up his mind so he can do anything. where are these brutal lawyers who insist on getting bail for them, Lord hear us.

The law does not forbid bail for murder. The precedent has been set when Police officers got bail some years ago. The only crime that you forbid bail is for treason

You mean since 2011 and this case cannot be called yet?
I would like to know who is taking care of the dead man’s children. He was a very hard working man. Shawn needs to go plant some yams so he can sell to give the money to Mingo’s children.
He still not repentent? why is he free?free to roam about. If he is out on bail there should be stiff restrictions.
